Anne Zaki

Scripture: Romans 14:6 Translator (into Arabic) of "Shukuru, Yesu (Thanking You, Jesus)" in Lift Up Your Hearts Anne Zaki was born in Cairo, Egypt, where her father was a pastor. At age 16 she was selected by the Egyptian government to represent her homeland in an international school in Western Canada, dedicated to peace and international understanding. After graduation she attended Calvin College, where she learned to integrate her faith and her dedication to social justice. Following her graduation with a BA in psychology and sociology in 1999, Zaki married Naji Umran, a Canadian-Syrian student at Calvin Theological Seminary, and they had four boys: Jonathan, Sebastian, Emmanuel, and Alexander. Zaki also earned two master's degrees, one in social psychology from the American University in Cairo in 2002, and one in divinity from Calvin Theological Seminary in 2009. She is currently pursuing a PhD in preaching at Fuller Theological Seminary. She worked as a research and development specialist for global worship for the Calvin Institute of Christian Worship from 2003 – 2013, developing global worship resources and organizing global worship conferences worldwide. Ever since, she's been cultivating a global perspective on life and faith by speaking at mission gatherings like Missio Nexus, the Global Consultation on Music and Missions (GCoMM), the Lausanne Movement's Younger Leaders Gathering (YLG), and Urbana 18. After pastoring churches in Michigan and British Columbia, the couple fulfilled their dream of returning to Egypt to live and serve in September 2011, nine months after the Arab Spring. Anne currently teaches at the Evangelical Presbyterian Seminary in Cairo, Egypt, courses on Preaching, Worship, Spiritual Formation, Psychology, and Communication. Anne Zaki

She was the daughter of a Mennonite minister and graduated from the Men­non­ite Col­lege In­sti­tute in Gret­na, Man­i­to­ba. After teaching in several rural schools, she attended the Men­non­ite Breth­ren Bi­ble Col­lege in Win­ni­peg. She taught mu­sic at the Men­non­ite Breth­ren Bi­ble Col­lege, and served as Dean and Re­gis­trar at the Ca­na­di­an Men­non­ite Bi­ble Col­lege. She al­so worked as a mis­sion­a­ry in Mex­i­co with her hus­band, Men­no Ber­gen (1956-68). She trans­lat­ed some 150 hymns, and com­posed sev­eral hymn tunes. McIntosh ========== Rigdon (Robert) McCoy McIntosh USA 1836-1899 Born at Maury County, TN, into a farming family, he attended Jackson College in Columbia, TN, graduating in 1854. He studied music under Asa Everett in Richmond, VA, and became a traveling singing school teacher. He also served briefly in the Civil War. He wrote several hymns during this period of his life. In 1860 he married Sarah McGlasson, and they had a daughter, Loulie Everett. In 1875 he was appointed head of the Vanderbilt University Music Department in Nashville, TN. In 1877 he joined the faculty of Emory College, Oxford, GA. In 1895 he left Emory College to devote his time to the R M McIntosh Publishing Company. He also served as music editor of the Methodist Episcopal Church South Publishing House for over 30 years. His song book publications include: “Good news” (1876), “Light & life” (1881), “Prayer & praise” (1883), “New life” (1879), “New life #2” (1886), and “Songs of service” (1896). After ordination, he served as assistant master, chaplain, organist and director of chapel music at Lancing College (1902-13); Warden of St. Edward’s School, Oxford (1913-25); Warden of St Peter’s College, Radley, Abingdon, Oxfordshire (1925-37); and Canon and Precentor of Salisbury Cathedral (1937-47).
