Lizzie Tourjée

1858 - 1913 Person Name: Lizzie S. Tourjée Topics: Las Sagradas Escrituras Composer of "WELLESLEY" in El Himnario Lizzie Shove Tourjee Estabrook USA 1858-1913. Born in Newport, RI, daughter of a famed music educator, organist, and composer, he encouraged her efforts at composing. When 17, she composed the tune for the famous hymn “Wellesley”. When her father, founder of the New England Conservatory of Music, became editor of the Methodist hymnal, he included her tune in the 1878 edition of the book, naming it for the college she attended, as she had written the tune while attending that school. She married Franklin Estabrook in 1883. They had a son, Rufus. She taught music and was an organist in Auburndale, MA. She died in Newton, MA. John Perry

Henry R. Bishop

1786 - 1855 Topics: Sagradas Escrituras; Sagradas Escrituras Composer (attributed to) of "MADRID" in El Himnario Bishop, Henry Rowley, was born at London, Nov. 18, 1786, and died at London, April 30, 1855. See a full notice in the Dictionary of Nat. Biog., v., 91. From 1840 he was occasional and from 1843 to 1848 sole conductor of the Antient Concerts. Of his Twelve Corales...as sung at the Concerts of Ancient Music, for which (with Words expressly written to them) they were adapted and arranged by Sir Henry R. Bishop, 1844 (B. M. copy is H. 878), some are fairly literal translations from the German, others have no connection with their nominal originals. Three were noted in this Dictionary, but their source not having been traced in 1892, we now subjoin them:— 1. Behold, how glorious is yon sky, p. 127, ii. This is from "Wie herrlich ist die neue Welt" in C. H. Graun's oratorio Der Tod Jesu, 1756 (B. M. copy, 11. 1805, catalogued as 1766), the words being by Karl Wilhelm Ramler, b. Feb. 25, 1725, at Colberg, in Pomerania; 1748, Professor of Literature at the Cadet School in Berlin; d. at Berlin, April 11, 1798. 2. God is our Refuge in distress, Our Shield, p. 325, i. 3. O let us praise the Lord, With hearts of true devotion, p. 963, ii., No. 4. The Winchester Hymn Book, 1857, alters stanza i., the original line 1. 3, 4 being:— "Whose spirit roams abroad, To calm life's troubled ocean." Edwin Hodder

1837 - 1904 Topics: Las Sagradas Escrituras Author of "Señor, Tu Libro Es Cual Vergel" in El Himnario Hodder, Edwin, published in 1863 The New Sunday School Hymn Book, and in 1868 a New and Enlarged edition of the same. To this collection he contributed 27 hymns, each of which is headed with his name. Of these nearly one half have passed into other hymnals for children, including Major; the Baptist Sunday School Hymn Book, 1880 ; the Sunday School Union Voice of Praise, 1886, and others. Born in 1838. --John Julian, Dictionary of Hymnology, Appendix, Part II (1907) ======================= Hodder, Edwin, p. 1571, i., was b. Dec. 13, 1837, at Staines, Middlesex, and went to New Zealand in 1856. After his return he joined the English Civil Service in 1861, retiring in 1897, and finally resided at Henfield, Sussex. He d. March 1, 1904. He was the author of many works, biographical, devotional and other, the earliest being Memories of New Zealand Life, 1862, and the latest The Life of a Century, 1900. His hymns appeared in his New Sunday School Hymn Book, 1863, and 2nd ed. 1863, including:— 1. Father, give us now Thy blessing. Close of School. 2. Lord, we bring our work to Thee. Christian Service. 3. The night was wild, and stormy winds. It is I. 4. The Saviour loves all children. Jesus the Children's Friend. 5. Thy Word is like a garden, Lord. Holy Scripture. George Lockwood

b. 1946 Topics: Sagradas Escrituras; Sagradas Escrituras Translator (inglés) of "La palabra del Señor (Righteous and just)" in El Himnario Rev. George Lockwood was born in 1946 and has been a missionary to Costa Rica. He has pastored Spanish-speaking congregations in both Arizona and California and served on the editorial committee for the Methodist hymnal supplement Celebremos II. In addition, Lockwood has traveled throughout Central and South America interviewing church musicians and gathering new hymns from both Spanish and Portuguese cultures which he then presents at conferences and workshops. Simei Monteiro

b. 1943 Topics: Sagradas Escrituras; Sagradas Escrituras Author of "Esa palabra en la vida" in El Himnario Simei Monteiro is a Brazilian poet, composer, translator, author and editor. She was Born in Belém, PA, Brazil in 1943. Her songs and translations appear in several hymn books and collections of sacred songs in Brazil, Latin America, USA, Europe, and Asia. She has a degree in Portuguese, French Language and Literature, and a Degree in Artistic Education. She is interested in worship and the arts, and her book: The Song of Life, explores the relationship between Hymnody and Theology. Until 2010, she was a missionary of The United Methodist Church, serving with the World Council of Churches (WCC), in Geneva, Switzerland, in the position of Worship Consultant. Simei is married to a Methodist pastor and has two adult daughters, two granddaughters, and a grandson. Simei Monteiro

William Loperena

1935 - 1996 Topics: Sagradas Escrituras Adapter of "SALMO 119" in El Himnario William Loperena, O.P. Father William Loperena was born in Moca, Puerto Rico on December 14, 1935. He was the middle son of Evaristo Loperena Ortega and America Soto Hernández. Raised in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico where he studied at the Colegio San Carlos. He attended the diocesan seminar San Ildefonso in Aibonito, Puerto Rico. Eventually joined the Order of Preachers known as Dominicans on August 16, 1955. Studied philosophy in Dover, Massachusetts, Washington and theology in Nijmegen, Holland. He became an ordained priest in the Netherlands on September 25, 1961. In 1968, he composed a complete Catholic mass infused with cultural elements of Puerto Rico including folk music and deeply rooted traditions which he called Misa Jíbara that was recorded in the studio of the Dominican seminar in Bayamon, PR, and in the Church del Santo Cristo de la Salud in Comerío, PR. Father William Loperena had vast knowledge of music and was a music composer of several genres including classical, folkloric and popular. His contribution to the music is recognized and appreciated throughout Puerto Rico, USA and Latin America, not only in Catholic Churches but also in the Protestant churches. He was also a pianist, poet, playwright, writer, sociologist, and university professor. Helga Rosado Loperena (niece)
