Laura S. Copenhaver

1868 - 1940 Scripture: Isaiah 40:3 Author of "Heralds of Christ" in Hymns for the Living Church Born: August 29, 1868, Marion, Virginia. Died: December 18, 1940, Marion, Virginia. Buried: Round Hill Cemetery, Marion, Virginia. Copenhaver was a professor of English Literature at Marion College, which her father John Jacob founded and where her sister May was dean of women. She wrote a number of hymns and magazine articles, and served as chairman of the education committee of the Woman’s Missionary Society of the United Lutheran Church. --www.hymntime.com/tch

George William Warren

1828 - 1902 Person Name: George W. Warren Scripture: Isaiah 40:3 Composer of "NATIONAL HYMN" in Hymns for the Living Church George W. Warren (b. Albany, NY, 1828; d. New York, 1902) received his general education at Racine College in Wisconsin, but as a musician he was largely self-trained. An organist in a number of Episcopal churches, he played the organ for thirty years (1870-1900) at St. Thomas Church in New York City. Warren composed anthems and liturgical service music; his hymn tunes were collected in Warren's Hymns and Tunes as Sung in St. Thomas Church (1888). Bert Polman

William Y. Fullerton

1857 - 1932 Scripture: Isaiah 40:5 Author of "I Cannot Tell" in The Worshiping Church Rv William Young Fullerton United Kingdom 1857-1932. Born at Belfast, Northern Ireland, he was raised Presbyterian, but became a Baptist preacher, administrator, and writer. When a young man he was influenced by the preaching of evangelist, Charles Spurgeon, who became his friend and mentor. He became pastor of the Melbourne Hall Baptiest Church. Thousands of people came to Christ under his ministry. He was tall, but very a[pproachable and kind. Fullerton served as President of the Baptist Union and Home Secretary of the Baptist Missionary Society. He spoke frequently at Keswick Conventions. He published works, including biographies of John Bunyan, Charles Spurgeon, James William Condell Fegan, and Frederick Brotherton Meyer. He also wrote missionary histories and devotionals. He compiled several hymnals as well. He died at Bedford Park, Middlesex. John Perry

George Matheson

1842 - 1906 Person Name: Rev. George Matheson Scripture: Isaiah 40:4 Author of "The Good Time Coming" in Sacred Songs Matheson, George, D.D., was born at Glasgow, March 27, 1842, and although deprived of his eyesight in youth he passed a brilliant course at the University of Edinburgh, where he graduated M.A. in 1862. In 1868 he became the parish minister at Innellan; and subsequently of St. Bernard's, Edinburgh. He was the Baird Lecturer in 1881, and St. Giles Lecturer in 1882. He has published several important prose works. His poetical pieces were collected and published in 1890 as Sacred Songs, Edinburgh: W. Blackwood. In addition to his hymn "O Love that wilt not let me go" (q. v.), four others from his Sacred Songs are in Dr. A. C. In addition to Dr. Matheson's hymn, "O Love, that wilt not let me go," p. 1583, i,, the following from his Sacred Songs, 1890, have come into common use since 1892:— 1. Come, let us raise a common song. Brotherhood. 2. Father divine, I come to Thee. Strength for Life. This, in Horder's Worship Song, 1905, is altered to”Saviour divine, I come to Thee." 3. Three doors there are in the temple. Prayer. Dr. Matheson informed us that these hymns, together with the rest of his Sacred Songs, 1890, were written at Bow, Dumbartonshire, in 1890.
