Down by the Jordan

Author: Carolyn Winfrey Gillette Meter: 14.14.4.7.8 Appears in 2 hymnals Scripture: Mark 1:1-11 First Line: Down by the Jordan, a prophet named John was baptizing Lyrics: Down by the Jordan, a prophet named John was baptizing, Preaching a message the people found bold and surprising: "God will forgive! Show that you'll change how you live! Surely God's new day is rising!" There by the river, the crowd came with great expectation: "Are you God's Chosen One, sent here to rescue our nation?" "No!" John replied. "He who is mightier than I Judges and offers salvation." Jesus, you went to be baptized with all of the others, Taking your place among sinners, God's lost sons and daughters. Then with great love, God's Spirit came as a dove! Your work began in those waters. Here in the Church, we are baptized and filled with God's Spirit. Freed and forgiven, we're welcomed with joy! Can you hear it? This is God's sign! This is how God says, "You're mine!" Let's take the good news and share it! Topics: Baptism; Church Year; Jesus Christ Ministry Used With Tune: LOBE DEN HERREN

Jesus Calls Us! O'er the Tumult

Author: Cecil Frances Alexander (1818-1895) Meter: 8.7.8.7 Appears in 927 hymnals Scripture: Mark 1:14-20 Lyrics: 1 Jesus calls us! O'er the tumult of our life's wild, restless sea, day by day his clear voice soundeth, saying, "Christian, follow me!" 2 As of old Saint Andrew heard it by the Galilean lake, turned from home and toil and kindred, leaving all for his dear sake. 3 Jesus calls us from the worship of the vain world's golden store; from each idol that would keep us, saying, "Christian, love me more." 4 In our joys and in our sorrows, days of toil and hours of ease, still he calls, in cares and pleasures, "Christian, love me more than these." 5 Jesus calls us! By thy mercies, Saviour, may we hear thy call, give our hearts to thine obedience, serve and love thee best of all. Topics: Call and Vocation; Andrew; Discipleship; Evangelism Used With Tune: ST. OSWALD

With joy we meditate the grace

Author: Isaac Watts, 1674-1748 Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 420 hymnals Scripture: Mark 1:12-13 Lyrics: 1 With joy we meditate the grace of our High Priest above; his heart is made of tenderness, and ever yearns with love. 2 Touched with a sympathy within, he knows our feeble frame; he knows what sore temptations mean for he has felt the same. 3 He in the days of feeble flesh poured out his cries and tears; and, in his measure, feels afresh what every member bears. 4 He'll never quench the smoking flax, but raise it to a flame; the bruisèd reed he never breaks, nor scorns the meanest name. 5 Then let our humble faith address his mercy and his power: we shall obtain delivering grace in every needful hour. The First Nowell

Meter: Irregular with refrain Appears in 401 hymnals Scripture: Mark 1:9-11 First Line: The first Nowell, the angel did say Lyrics: 1 The first Nowell the angel did say was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay; In fields where they lay keeping their sheep, on a cold winter’s night that was so deep. Refrain: Nowell, nowell, nowell, nowell, born in a manger, Emmanuel. 2 They looked above and saw a star shining in the east, beyond them far; And to the earth it gave great light, and so it continued both day and night. [Refrain] 3 And by the light of that same star three sages came from country far, To seek for a king was their intent, and to follow the star wherever it went. [Refrain] 4 This star shone bright in the northwest, o’er Bethlehem it took its rest, And there it did both stop and stay, right over the place where Jesus lay. [Refrain] 5 Then entered in those magi three, and bending low upon their knee, They offered there, in great reverence, their gold and myrrh and frankincense. [Refrain] Topics: Christmas; Jesus Christ Birth and Infancy; Year A Epiphany; Year B Epiphany; Year C Epiphany Used With Tune: THE FIRST NOWELL Text Sources: Traditional English carol, alt.
