J. Howard Entwisle

1865 - 1901 Scripture: Genesis 32:26 Composer of "[Nay, I will not let thee go]" in Songs of Love and Praise No. 4 J Howard Entwisle USA 1865-1901. Born in PA, he became a musician and songbook editor-compiler in Philadelphia, PA, in the 1890s. He collaberated with William J Kirkpatrick, also of Philadelphia, promoting gospel songs. He helped compile “Songs of love and praise #4”, then later “Songs of love and praise #5”. Other published works were: “Bright melodies” (1899), “Heavenly sunlight” (1900), “Exalted praise” (1901). Mary Bittner

1938 - 2007 Person Name: Mary R. Bittner Scripture: Genesis 32:22-31 Author of "Now Comes the Dark Night of the Soul" in Water from the Rock Mary Bittner was a native of Pennsylvania and received a B.S. in music education from Penn State University. She taught piano, organ, clarinet, and school music, and also served as music director and/or organist in Baptist, United Methodist, and Presbyterian churches and a U.S. Air Force Base Protestant chapel. In 1991 she became organist at Knox Presbyterian Church in Naperville, IL. She was an active member of the Naperville chapter of the Illinois State Music Teachers Association, and honored as Member of the year in 1998. She also participated in recitals and activities of the Fox Valley chapter of the American Guild of Organists. She began writing hymns in 1990 while enrolled in a church music degree program at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary and Northwestern University in Evanston, IL. She received her Master of Theological Studies in church music in 1993, the same year she began attending hymn writing workshops and conferences of the Hymn Society in the United States and Canada. Jane Marshall

1924 - 2019 Person Name: Jane Manton Marshall (b. 1924) Scripture: Genesis 32:22-33 Author of "With awe approach the mysteries" in Wonder, Love, and Praise Jane Marshall, was born Jane Anne Manton in Dallas in 1924. She became a pianist and organist and composed music as a teenager. She earned a music degree in 1945 from SMU. She married Elbert Marshall. She went on to write more than 200 hymns and other sacred music works. She later earned a Masters degree in 1968 from SMU in choral conducting and composition. She taught at SMU's Perkins School of Theology and tis Church Music Summer School from 1975-2010. She attended Northaven United Methodist Church in Dallas for many years, collaborated often with other hymn writers, and encouraged many students.
