Woodward (b. Birkenhead, Cheshire, England, 1848; d. Highgate, London, England, 1934) was ordained in the Church of England in 1874. He served in six parishes in London, Norfolk, and Suffolk. He was a gifted linguist and translator of a large number of hymns from Greek, Latin, and German. But Woodward's theory of translation was a rigid one–he held that the translation ought to reproduce the meter and rhyme scheme of the original as well as its contents. This practice did not always produce singable hymns; his translations are therefore used more often today as valuable resources than as congregational hymns. Pye, 1825-1903 Topics: Epiphany; Christ--Life and ministry of; Christian year--Epiphany Author of "In His Temple Now Behold Him" in Moravian Book of Worship Pye, Henry John, M.A., son of H. J. Pye, of Clifton Hall, Staffordshire, was born circa 1825, and educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, (B.A. 1848, M.A. 1852.) Taking Holy Orders in 1850, he was presented by his father in 1851 to the Rectory of Clifton-Campville, Staffordshire. In 1868 he, together with his wife (only daughter of Bishop S. Wilberforce), joined the Roman Catholic Church. Mr. Pye published Two Lectures on the Church, 1852; Short Ecclesiastical History, 1854; and various Sermons. He also compiled a book of Hymns for use at Clifton-Campville in 1851. To that collection he contributed a few hymns, including:— 1. In His temple now behold Him. Purification of Blessed Virgin Mary. This hymn was repeated, in a slightly altered form and an additional stanza (iv.), by Canon W. Cooke in the Cooke and Denton Hymnal, 1853 ; the Salisbury Hymn Book, 1857; and many later collections. It is sometimes given with the fourth stanza as in the Sarum, 1868; Snepp's Songs of Grace & Glory, 1872, &c. The full Pye-Cooke text of 1853 is in the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge Church Hymns, 1871; Turing's Collection, 1882 (slightly altered); and others. This hymn is sometimes given as a translation from Angelus Silesius (Scheffler), but in error. 2. 0 praise ye the Lord, Ye nations rejoice. Annunciation. James Russell Woodford

1820 - 1885 Person Name: James Russell Woodford, 1820-1885 Topics: Epiphany; Christ--Life and ministry of; Christian year--Epiphany Author of "Within the Father's House" in Moravian Book of Worship Woodford, James Russell, D.D., was born April 30, 1820, and educated at Merchant Taylors School, and Pembroke College, Cambridge, of which he was a scholar; B.A. Senior Optime, and 2nd class in the Classical Tripos. He was ordained in 1843, and became second Master in Bishop's College, Bristol; and Curate of St. John the Baptist, Broad Street, in that city. He became Incumbent of St. Saviour's, Coalpit Heath, 1845; of St. Mark's, Easton, Bristol, 1848; and Vicar of Kempsford, Gloucestershire, 1855. In 1868 he was preferred by the Crown to the important vicarage of Leeds on Dr. Atlay's appointment as Bishop of Hereford. He was several times Select Preacher at Cambridge. He was also Hon. Chaplain to the Queen (1867). In 1873 he was consecrated, in Westminster Abbey, Bishop of Ely. He died at Ely on Oct. 24, 1885. Bishop Woodford published Sermons, 1853; Lectures for Holy Week, 1853; Lectures on the Creed, 1853; Sermons, 1864; and Sermons, Charges, &c, at later dates. His Hymns arranged for the Sundays and Holy Days of the Church of England appeared in 1852 and 1855. He also joined H. W. Beadon, and Greville Phillimore in editing The Parish Hymn Book, 1863, and (enlarged) 1875. To these collections his original hymns, and his translations from the Latin, were contributed. The originals include:— 1. Lamb of God, for sinners slain. Passiontide. 1852. 2. Not by Thy mighty hand. Epiphany. 1863. 3. O come, and with the early morn. Easter. 1852. 4. Within the Father's house. Epiphany. 1863. Bishop Woodford's translations are annotated under their respective Latin first lines. John A. Dalles

b. 1954 Topics: Light (see also Illumination and Epiphany and Ministry of Christ) Adapter of "Why Would We Light a Lamp" in Singing the New Testament Born: September 13, 1954, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. A lifelong Presbyterian, John Dalles has lived in Pittsburgh, Coatesville, Lancaster, and State College, Pennsylvania; and South Bend, Indiana. He received the Bachelor of Science in Architecture from Pennsylvania State in 1976. While engaged in a semester abroad in Petworth, England, he sensed a call to the ministry. An architectural designer before divinity studies, he received the Master of Divinity from Lancaster Theological Seminary in 1982. During seminary, he served as a resource consultant for the original Parish Resource Center in Lancaster. Ordained in Highland Presbyterian Church, Lancaster, on August 1, 1982, John’s first call was to serve the First Presbyterian Church of South Bend, Indiana, as associate pastor. Responsibilities there included worship leadership and preaching, administration of mission and memorial endowment disbursement for mission (over $130,000 annually), minister for education and pastoral care (Diaconate), coordinator of new member outreach and staff liaison to the church owned resident camp. He served the area council of religious organizations, was a member of the Worship Task Force and Discipleship/Church Life Committee of Wabash Valley Presbytery, member and awards chairman of the St. Joseph County Scholarship Foundation, and founding member of Notre Dame Civitan and the South Bend, Indiana, Habitat for Humanity. In December 1986, Dalles was called to Fox Chapel Presbyterian Church, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where his duties included worship leadership and preaching, programming for spiritual growth, congregational life, administration of pastoral care, adult education, Stephen Ministry, and new member outreach (with annual membership increases of 100 or more). In May 1994, Dalles received the Doctor of Ministry degree from Pittsburgh Theological Seminary for his work in the area of pastoral leadership in the multi-staff church. While at Fox Chapel, he instituted an annual community prayer breakfast, served on the Presbytery’s Preparation for Ministry Committee, and as liaison to an area rehabilitation center. He wrote and edited In Life and Death We Belong to God, the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) study resource on end-of-life issues. Since May 1997, Dalles has served as pastor and head of staff of Wekiva Presbyterian Church, Orlando, Florida, an active and growing congregation in its 26th year. Accomplishments during his pastorate have included a major capital and facilities expansion, growth in new members, and the implementation of new staffing and programs at every level of the congregation’s life. He has chaired the Theology and Worship Committee of Central Florida Presbytery for the past three years. Dalles has written numerous articles and many published hymn texts. His hymns "Come, O Spirit" and "God Bless Your Church with Strength!" are in the 1990 Presbyterian Hymnal. His lyrics are also in: The New Century Hymnal, The Moravian Book of Worship, Worship Together (Mennonite Brethren), The Covenant Hymnal (Evangelical Covenant Church), The Book of Praise (Presbyterian Church in Canada) and The Australian Book of Praise II. He has written anniversary hymn texts, including: Presbyterian Heritage Sunday, Augsburg, Goshen, Maryville, Tusculum, Wilson and Knox Colleges, American University, Pittsburgh and Lancaster Seminaries, Peachtree Presbyterian Church, the Lutheran World Federation and the Presbyterian Association of Musicians. A member of the Hymn Society, he has been listed in national and world editions of Who’s Who since 1997. Two of his anthems are on a CD by composer Bob Moore entitled "Like a Whisper in the Heart." H. T. Burleigh

1866 - 1949 Person Name: Harry T. Burleigh Topics: Light (see also Illumination and Epiphany and Ministry of Christ) Arranger of "MCKEE" in Singing the New Testament Harry T. Burleigh (b. Erie, PA, 1866; d. Stamford, CT, 1949) began his musical career as a choirboy in St. Paul's Cathedral, Erie, Pennsylvania. He also studied at the National Conservatory of Music, New York City, where he was befriended by Antonín Dvořák and, according to tradition, provided Dvořák with some African American musical themes that became part of Dvořák's New World Symphony. Burleigh composed at least two hundred works but is most remembered for his vocal solo arrangements of African American spirituals. In 1944 Burleigh was honored as a Fellow of the Hymn Society in the United States and Canada. Bert Polman
