Calvin Seerveld

b. 1930 Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.7.7 Versifier of "Once I Said, "I Must Keep Quiet"" in Psalter Hymnal (Gray) Calvin Seerveld (b. 1930) was professor of aesthetics at the Institute for Christian Studies in Toronto from 1972 until he retired in 1995. Educated at Calvin College, Grand Rapids, Michigan; the University of Michigan; and the Free University of Amsterdam (Ph.D.), he also studied at Basel University in Switzerland, the University of Rome, and the University of Heidelberg. Seerveld began his career by teaching at Bellhaven College in Jackson, Mississippi (1958-1959), and at Trinity Christian College in Palos Heights, Illinois (1959-1972). A fine Christian scholar, fluent in various biblical and modern languages, he is published widely in aesthetics, biblical studies, and philosophy. His books include Take Hold of God and Pull (1966), The Greatest Song: In Critique of Solomon (1967), For God's Sake, Run with Joy (1972), Rainbows for the Fallen World: Aesthetic Life and Artistic Task (1980), and On Being Human (1988). He credits the Dutch musician Ina Lohr for influencing his compositions of hymn tunes. Most of his Bible versifications and hymns were written for the Psalter Hymnal (1987), on whose revision committee he ably served. Bert Polman

Johan Olof Wallin

1779 - 1839 Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.7.7 Author of "Heavenly Light, Benignly Beaming" in The Hymnal and Order of Service Johan Olaf Wallin was born at Stora Tuna, in 1779, and early displayed his poetical powers. In 1805, and again in 1809, he gained the chief prize for poetry at Upsala. In the latter year he became pastor at Solna; here his ability as a preacher was so striking that he was transferred to Stockholm, in 1815, as "pastor primarius," a title for which we have no exact equivalent. In 1818 he was made Dean of Westeras, and set about the task of editing a revised hymn-book for the whole of Sweden. This task he completed in 1819, and published it as, Den Swenska Psalmboken, af Konungen gillad och stadfästad (The Swedish hymn-book, approved and confirmed by the King). To it he contributed some 150 hymns of his own, besides translations and recastings; and the book remains now in the form in which he brought it out. George Lockwood

b. 1946 Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.7.7 Translator of "Cuando vienen a la vida, sombras" in El Himnario Rev. George Lockwood was born in 1946 and has been a missionary to Costa Rica. He has pastored Spanish-speaking congregations in both Arizona and California and served on the editorial committee for the Methodist hymnal supplement Celebremos II. In addition, Lockwood has traveled throughout Central and South America interviewing church musicians and gathering new hymns from both Spanish and Portuguese cultures which he then presents at conferences and workshops. David Mowbray

b. 1938 Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.7.7 Author of "We Believe in God Almighty" in Renew! Songs and Hymns for Blended Worship David Mowbray (b. 1938) was born in Wallington, Surrey, England. He attended Dulwich College, Fitzwilliam, Cambridge where he read English. He gained an MA at Trinity in Bristol and a BD at London (External). Ordained in the Church of England, he was a curate at St. Giles in Northampton and at St. Mary's in Walford. Appointed Vicar of Broxborne, Herts in 1970 in 1984, he became Vicar of All Saints, Hertfordshire. In 1991 he became Vicar of St. Matthew's Darley Abbey, Derby, where he serves to this day. He has been writing hymns since 1977 and most of his texts are represented by Jubilate Hymns.
