William H. Flaville

1829 - 1897 Person Name: W. H. Flaville Hymnal Number: 32 Author of "The Summer Time" in Gospel Praise Book Born: March 27, 1829, Long Branch, New Jersey (birth name: Flavill). Died: November 26, 1897, Chester, Pennsylvania. Buried: Rural Cemetery, Chester, Pennsylvania. William’s parents were Edward Edwards Flavill and Jane Eliza Yelland Flavill; he married Mary Louisa Forrest Seary in 1852. He held many jobs, including Justice of the Peace, surveyor, "conveyancer," carpenter, real estate agent, and civil engineer. --www.hymntime.com/tch/ ================ The 1880 US Census lists William Flaville as living in Chester, Pennsylvania, married with two sons, and an occupation as Surveyor. William Flaville is listed in the Chester City Directory of 1891-92 as a civil engineer and as a member of the school board. He is also listed in the history of Delaware County as a Chester City surveyor. Based on a 1951 biographical sketch of William Flaville’s grandson, Chester F. Baker, who followed his footsteps as Chester city surveyor, William was a schoolteacher as well as a surveyor. An account is told that William was in love with a young lady, but her father refused to let them marry, because he did not think a teacher’s salary was sufficient support. The night of the refusal her father saw William kneeling in the snow praying in the moonlight, and relented. These accounts lend evidence that William was a man of faith and an educated man who could have produced the text of “Weary Not” as an expression of the heart although not a prolific or professional writer. The work is known to have been published in 1878 or 1879, when he was about 50 years of age. Nine known hymn texts are attributed to William H. Flaville, although “Weary Not” is believed to be the best known. J. H. Rosecrans

1845 - 1926 Hymnal Number: 33 Composer of "[Jerusalem, the beautiful]" in Gospel Praise Book James Holmes Rosecrans studied at the Baxter University of Music in Friendship, New York. After teaching for two years, he joined the Fillmore Brothers Music House in Cincinnati, Ohio. As of 1880, he was teaching music in Douglas County, Colorado. In 1884, was an evangelist in California, and later was associated with evangelistic efforts in Texas, and taught music and Bible at Carlton College in Bonham, Texas. Anzentia Igene Perry Chapman

1849 - 1889 Person Name: Mrs. E. W. Chapman Hymnal Number: 37 Author of "Look to the Light-House" in Gospel Praise Book Anzentia Igene (Angie) Perry Chapman, 1849-1889. Born near Lansing, MI, Angie was the wife of Free Methodist minister, Edwin W. Chapman. They had three children. She helped on his evangelism tours and rural preaching circuits. They worked in Sparta, MI, and helped found the first Free Methodist church in Grand Rapids, MI. She also wrote hymn lyrics. In 1888 they followed an evangelistic tour of Kansas, and them moved to Isabella County, MI. She died in Mt. Pleasant, MI. John Perry

M. Lowrie Hofford

1825 - 1888 Person Name: Rev. M. L. Hofford Hymnal Number: 33 Author of "Jerusalem, the Beautiful" in Gospel Praise Book Born: January 27, 1825, Doylestown, Pennsylvania. Died: January 9, 1888, Trenton, New Jersey. Hofford attended Lafayette and Princeton, where he graduated in 1849. He studied theology at the Princeton seminary for a year, and became principal of the Camden collegiate institute. While there, he organized a church at Beverly, New Jersey, being licensed by the Presbytery in Philadelphia in 1852. In 1855, he was ordained an evangelist in Burlington, New Jersey. In 1860, he began teaching at the Trenton Institute, and in 1863 took charge of a military institute at Allentown, Pennsylvania that was later incorporated as Muhlenberg College; he served there as a professor and later president. He taught and pastored at Camden and Beverly, New Jersey, and Doylestown, Pennsylvania (1868-78), then became pastor at Morrisville, Pennsylvania. --www.hymntime.com/tch

He was referenced as the Secretary to the National Club, a private men's club for Christians of different backgrounds. Bellamy wrote popular music and ballads. He was a talented author, lyricist, and librettist. He wrote about a wide variety of life situations, often in narrative or humor form. His verses on the Book of Common Prayer numbered 88 pages. F. B. Harris

1850 - 1909 Person Name: Flora L. Best Hymnal Number: 104 Author of "The New Song" in Gospel Praise Book Birth: 1850, USA Death: Sep., 1909 Flora Lydia (Best) Harris was the daughter of Dr. David and Elizabeth (Lockart) Best. She was the 1st wife of Rev. Bishop Merriman Colbert Harris. He was a minister in the Pittsburgh Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church. She was a writer and wrote on Japanese themes.
