He married Elizabeth Billings, and they had a daughter and two sons. He was organist at Central Baptist Church,Norwich, CN. After that, he went to NewYork City and served as bass soloist at Calvary Episcopal church and Grace Church. Later, he served as bass soloist and choir director of Madison Avenue Baptist Church. His famous hymn was written in 1849. Two years later, William Howard Doane was baptized in the same church. John Perry

He managed music stores in New York City and Philadelphia, PA., the latter with composer partner, William Fischer. He married Josephine Louisa Barrows, and they had seven children: Blanche, Marie, Ida, John, Josephine, Josephine, and Augusta. He compiled eight religious songbooks from 1846 thru 1869. Died: April 3, 1950, Los Angeles, California. Buried: Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Glendale, California. Pseudonym: Fred B. Holton. Wilson’s sister taught him to play the violin and organ while still at home. Around 1902, Ira began studies at the Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, Illinois. In 1905, he went to work for the Lorenz Publishing Company in Dayton, Ohio. His compositions appeared in The Choir Leader and The Choir Herald; he also served as editor in chief of The Volunteer Choir. Mrs. C. H. Morris

1862 - 1929 Person Name: Mrs. C. H. M. Hymnal Number: 113 Author of "All the Lord's" in Harp of Zion Lelia (Mrs. C.H.) Morris (1862-1929) was born in Pennsville, Morgan County, Ohio. When her family moved to Malta on the Muskingum River she and her sister and mother had a millinery shop in McConnelsville. She and her husband Charles H. Morris were active in the Methodist Episcopal Church and at the camp meetings in Sebring and Mt. Vernon. She wrote hymns as she did her housework. Although she became blind at age 52 she continued to write hymns on a 28-foot long blackboard that her family had built for her. She is said to have written 1000 texts and many tunes including "Sweeter as the years go by." Mary Louise VanDyke

1849 - 1919 Hymnal Number: 181 Author of "The Dropping Rain" in Harp of Zion Julia Harriet Johnston, who was born on Jan. 21, 1849, at Salineville, OH, in Columbiana County. Her father was a minister and he mother was a poet. She began writing when she was nine years old but really started writing verse in high school. She lived in Peoria, Ill. Lewis E. Jones

1865 - 1936 Person Name: L. E. Jones Hymnal Number: 12 Composer of "[Down at the cross I found a full salvation]" in Harp of Zion Pseudonyms: Mary Slater ================ Lewis Edgar Jones USA 1865-1936. Born in Yates City, IL, his family moved near Davenport, IA, where he lived on a farm until age 21. He went into business for awhile, and attended the Moody Bible Institute in Chicago. He was a classmate of evangelist, Billy Sunday. After graduating, he worked for the YMCA in Davenport, IA; Fort Worth, TX (1915, as general secretary); and Santa Barbara, CA (1925 as general secretary). Hymn writing was his avocation, and he wrote 200+, advising that many came from pastors’ sermons. He married Lora May Wright (1872-1950), and they had a daughter, Frances Ellen (1897-1982). 1823 - 1915 Hymnal Number: 66 Author of "To Jesus I'll Never Say Nay" in Harp of Zion Harriet E. Rice Jones, 1823-1915 Born: April 18, 1823, Pompey Hollow, Onondaga County, New York. Died: 1915, Binghamton, New York. Buried: Oran Community Church Cemetery, Pompey, Onondaga County, New York. Daughter of Eleazer Rice, Jones lived in Onondaga County, New York. Her girlhood was spent on a farm, receiving what education the country schools and one term at high school could provide. She was always fond of reading, and was a great singer, with a clear ringing voice. On July 7, 1844, she married a son of Rev. Zenas Jones; her husband died in 1879. Her song writing career began when her poetry came to the attention of Dr. M. J. Munger, who asked if she could write some Sunday school hymns for him. She went on to write for Daniel Towner, J. C.
