Glorious things of thee are spoken

Author: John Newton, 1725-1807 Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Appears in 1,310 hymnals Topics: Year A Proper 20; Year A Proper 4; Year B Proper 13; Year B Proper 9; Year C Christ the King; Year C Easter 3; Year C Epiphany 4; Years A, B, and C Easter Vigil; Confirmation; Grace and Providence; Joy, Praise and Thanksgiving Lyrics: 1 Glorious things of thee are spoken, Zion, city of our God; he whose word cannot be broken formed thee for his own abode. On the Rock of Ages founded, what can shake thy sure repose? With salvation's walls surrounded, thou may'st smile at all thy foes. 2 See, the streams of living waters, springing from eternal love, well supply thy sons and daughters, and all fear of want remove. Who can faint while such a river ever flows their thirst to assuage? Grace which, like the Lord, the giver, never fails from age to age. 3 Round each habitation hov'ering, see the cloud and fire appear for a glory and a cov'ring, showing that the Lord is near. Thus they march, the pillar leading, light by night and shade by day; daily on the manna feeding which he gives them when they pray. 4 Saviour, if of Zion's city I through grace a member am, let the world deride or pity, I will glory in thy name. Fading is the worldling's pleasure, boasted pomp and empty show; solid joys and lasting treasure, none but Zion's children know. Scripture: Isaiah 33:20-21 Used With Tune: ABBOT'S LEIGH

I once was lost, but now am found, was blind, but now I see. 2 'Twas grace that taught my heart to fear and grace my fears relieved; how precious did that grace appear the hour I first believed! 3 Through many dangers, toils, and snares, I have already come; 'tis grace that brought me safe thus far, and grace will lead me home. 4 The Lord has promised good to me, this word my hope secures; God will my shield and portion be as long as life endures. 5 When we've been there ten thousand years bright shining as the sun, we've no less days to sing God's praise than when we'd first begun.
