Charles Coffin

1676 - 1749 Person Name: Prof. Charles Coffin (1676-1749) Scripture: Hebrews 9:24 Author of "O Saviour, who for man hast trod" in Carmina Sanctorum, a selection of hymns and songs of praise with tunes Coffin, Charles, born at Buzaney (Ardennes) in 1676, died 1749, was principal of the college at Beauvais, 1712 (succeeding the historian Rollin), and rector of the University of Paris, 1718. He published in 1727 some, of his Latin poems, for which he was already noted, and in 1736 the bulk of his hymns appeared in the Paris Breviary of that year. In the same year he published them as Hymni Sacri Auctore Carolo Coffin, and in 1755 a complete ed. of his Works was issued in 2 vols. To his Hymni Sacri is prefixed an interesting preface. The whole plan of his hymns, and of the Paris Breviary which he so largely influenced, comes out in his words. "In his porro scribendis Hymnis non tam poetico indulgendunv spiritui, quam nitoro et pietate consulendum esse existimavi. Pleraque igitur, argumentis convenientia e purissiinis Scripturae Sacrae fontibus deprompsi quac idoneis Ecclesiae cantui numeris alligarem." His hymns are described by a French critic as having less brilliancy than those of Santüil (q.v.), but more simplicity and unction. They number 100 in the edition of 1736. Kathleen Thomerson

Olive Lutheran Church in Austin, Texas. She was born in Tennessee and grew up in Mississippi, California, and Texas. College music study was at the Universities of Colorado and Texas, the Flemish Royal Conservatory in Antwerp, and privately in Paris. Before retirement in Austin, she lived in Collinsville, Illinois, when her husband was a biology professor at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville. Ken Medema

b. 1943 Scripture: Hebrews 9:22 Author of "Lord, Listen to Your Children Praying" in The Worshiping Church Ken Medema (b. Grand Rapids, Michigan, 1943) is a song writer, composer, recording artist, and story-teller through music. Blind from birth, Ken began playing the piano at age five and studied classical music by reading Braille. He graduated from Grand Rapids Christian High School and studied music therapy at Michigan State University in Lansing, Michigan. As a music therapist in both Indiana and New Jersey, he began writing songs for hurting teenagers, an experience that helped to launch a career of writing songs on Christian life that has taken him to venues large and small all over North America and beyond. He responds to what he hears and sees in his heart at particular events, often improvising songs on the spot, offering compassion, honesty and desire for integrity in both worship and life. George Lockwood

George Lockwood was born in 1946 and has been a missionary to Costa Rica. He has pastored Spanish-speaking congregations in both Arizona and California and served on the editorial committee for the Methodist hymnal supplement Celebremos II. In addition, Lockwood has traveled throughout Central and South America interviewing church musicians and gathering new hymns from both Spanish and Portuguese cultures which he then presents at conferences and workshops. 1741 - 1796 Person Name: T. G. v. Hippel, 1741-1796 Scripture: Hebrews 9:27 Author of "Noch leb' ich; ob ich morgen lebe?" in Deutsches Gesangbuch für die Evangelisch-Luterische Kirche in den Vereinigten Staaten Hippel, Theodor Gottlieb von, son of Melchior Hippel, rector of the Latin school at Gerdauen, in East Prussia, was b. at Gerdauen Jan. 31, 1741. He entered the University of Königsberg in 1756 as a student of theology, where he became an ardent disciple of Kant, and then, in 1762, turned to the study of law. In 1765 he became an advocate in Königsberg; in 1772, Town Judge; 1780, Burgomaster and Director of Police; 1786, Geheim Kriegsrath and City President. He died at Königsberg, April 23, 1796 (Koch, vi. 301-309; Allgemeine Deutsche Biographie, xii. 463-66). In his writings Hippel's great aim was to popularise and apply the ideas of his master Kant. In his inner life he was a combination of contradictions; on one side of a wonderful fervour of devotion and communion with the unseen; and on the other ambitious, miserly and worldly. His hymns, written in the manner of Gellert, and almost all composed 1767-60, appeared mostly in his Geistliche Lieder, Berlin, 1772, and were reprinted with additions in vol. viii. of his collected works (14 vols., Berlin, 1827-37). Two have passed into English. i. Gott hab' ich mich ergeben. Resignation. 1772, p. 44, in 7 stanzas of 6 lines, entitled "Submission to the will of God"; thence in the Berlin Geistliche Lieder, ed. 1863, No. 908. In the Berlin Gesang-Buch, 1829, No. 581, altered to "Dir hab ich mich ergeben." The only translation in common use is:— To Thee, 0 Lord, I yield my spirit . Thine . Henry Elliott Fox

1841 - 1926 Person Name: Henry E. Fox (1841-1926) Scripture: Hebrews 9:22 Author of "Send out the gospel! Let it sound" in Church Hymnary (4th ed.) Fox, Henry Elliott, M.A., son of Henry Watson Fox, born at Masulipatam, S. India, on Oct. 21, 1841, and educated at Harrow and Trinity College, Cambridge; B.A. (3rd class Cl. Trip.) 1864; M.A. 1869. Ordained in 1869, he was Curate of St. Ebbe, Oxford, 1869-73; Vicar of Christ Ch., Westminster, 1873-82, and of St. Nicholas, Durham, 1882-1895. From 1895 he has been Hon. Sec. of the C.M.S. He is also Commiss. for Uganda (1890), and Mombasa (1900). His deep interest in Foreign Missions is well known. He became a Preb. of St. Paul's in 1901. His hymns in common use include the following:— 1. 0 King of glory, God of grace. [Foreign Missions.] Written in 1899 for the centenary of the C.M.S., and included in the Church Missionary Society Hymn Book of the same year. 2. Send forth the Gospel! Let it run.
