John L. Bell

b. 1949 Transcriber of "ALLELUIA SOUTH AFRICA" in Voices Together John Bell (b. 1949) was born in the Scottish town of Kilmarnock in Ayrshire, intending to be a music teacher when he felt the call to the ministry. But in frustration with his classes, he did volunteer work in a deprived neighborhood in London for a time and also served for two years as an associate pastor at the English Reformed Church in Amsterdam. After graduating he worked for five years as a youth pastor for the Church of Scotland, serving a large region that included about 500 churches. He then took a similar position with the Iona Community, and with his colleague Graham Maule, began to broaden the youth ministry to focus on renewal of the church’s worship. His approach soon turned to composing songs within the identifiable traditions of hymnody that began to address concerns missing from the current Scottish hymnal: "I discovered that seldom did our hymns represent the plight of poor people to God. There was nothing that dealt with unemployment, nothing that dealt with living in a multicultural society and feeling disenfranchised. There was nothing about child abuse…,that reflected concern for the developing world, nothing that helped see ourselves as brothers and sisters to those who are suffering from poverty or persecution." [from an interview in Reformed Worship (March 1993)] That concern not only led to writing many songs, but increasingly to introducing them internationally in many conferences, while also gathering songs from around the world. He was convener for the fourth edition of the Church of Scotland’s Church Hymnary (2005), a very different collection from the previous 1973 edition. His books, The Singing Thing and The Singing Thing Too, as well as the many collections of songs and worship resources produced by John Bell—some together with other members of the Iona Community’s “Wild Goose Resource Group,” —are available in North America from GIA Publications. Jacques Berthier

1923 - 1994 Composer of "KYRIE 1" in Voices Together Jacques Berthier (b. Auxerre, Burgundy, June 27, 1923; d. June 27, 1994) A son of musical parents, Berthier studied music at the Ecole Cesar Franck in Paris. From 1961 until his death he served as organist at St. Ignace Church, Paris. Although his published works include numerous compositions for organ, voice, and instruments, Berthier is best known as the composer of service music for the Taizé community near Cluny, Burgundy. Influenced by the French liturgist and church musician Joseph Gelineau, Berthier began writing songs for equal voices in 1955 for the services of the then nascent community of twenty brothers at Taizé. As the Taizé community grew, Berthier continued to compose most of the mini-hymns, canons, and various associated instrumental arrangements, which are now universally known as the Taizé repertoire. In the past two decades this repertoire has become widely used in North American church music in both Roman Catholic and Protestant traditions. Bert Polman

Gerard Moultrie

1829 - 1885 Translator of "Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence" in Voices Together Moultrie, Gerard, M.A., son of the Rev. John Moultrie, was born at Rugby Rectory, Sept. 16, 1829, and educated at Rugby and Exeter College, Oxford (B.A. 1851, M.A. 1856). Taking Holy Orders, he became Third Master and Chaplain in Shrewsbury School; Chaplain to the Dowager Marchioness of Londonderry, 1855-59; curate of Brightwaltham, 1859; and of Brinfield, Berks, 1860; Chaplain of the Donative of Barrow Gurney, Bristol, 1864: Vicar of Southleigh, 1869, and Warden of St. James's College, Southleigh,1873. He died April 25, 1885. His publications include: 1) The Primer set forth at large for the use of the Faithful. In Family and Private Prayer. Edited from the Post Reformation editions, 1864. (2) Hymns and Lyrics for the Seasons and Saints' Days of the Church, 1867. The hymns of his sister, Mary Dunlop Moultrie (q.v.), were included in this volume. (3) The Espousals of S. Dorothea and Other Verses, 1870. (5) The Devout Communicant, 1867. (6) Six Years' work in Southleigh, 1875. (7) Cantica Sanctorum, or Hymns for the Black Letter Saints Days in the English and Scottish Calendars, to which are added a few Hymns for Special Occasions, 1880. Mr. Moultrie's hymns include translations from the Greek, Latin, and German, in addition to original compositions. A large number appeared in the Church Times, and other papers; and many were written for special Saints' Days, and Other Festivals, for the People's Hymnal, 1867, in which some were signed "D. P." Sunday School Anniversary. A hymn to be sung alternately by men and boys during the collection, written in 1877 for St. Agnes's, Kennington, London. 37. This is the hour of peace and blest communion. Holy Communion. Written for the English Church Union Commemoration held at St. Agnes's, Kennington Park, London, June 9, 1880. From the subjects of the hymns noted above it will be seen that Mr. Moultrie wrote principally on matters not usually dealt with by hymnwriters. This is specially the case with his Cantica Sanctorum, in which most of the 103 hymns are for "Black Letter Saints' Days." --John Julian, Dictionary of Hymnology (1907) =================== Moultrie, G., p. 771, ii. We find that Mr. Moultrie wrote the preface to the Cantica Sanctorum, 1880, but did not edit the book. He and others contributed some thirteen hymns thereto. Sylvia G. Dunstan

1955 - 1993 Author of "I Believe in God Almighty" in Voices Together After a brief, arduous battle with liver cancer, Canadian Sylvia Dunstan died in 1993 at the age of 38. For thirteen years, Dunstan had served the United Church of Canada as a parish minister and prison chaplain. She is remembered by those who knew her for her passion for those in need, her gift of writing, and her love of liturgy. Sing! A New Creation

Ralph Vaughan Williams

1872 - 1958 Harmonizer of "PLEADING SAVIOR" in Voices Together Through his composing, conducting, collecting, editing, and teaching, Ralph Vaughan Williams (b. Down Ampney, Gloucestershire, England, October 12, 1872; d. Westminster, London, England, August 26, 1958) became the chief figure in the realm of English music and church music in the first half of the twentieth century. His education included instruction at the Royal College of Music in London and Trinity College, Cambridge, as well as additional studies in Berlin and Paris. During World War I he served in the army medical corps in France. Vaughan Williams taught music at the Royal College of Music (1920-1940), conducted the Bach Choir in London (1920-1927), and directed the Leith Hill Music Festival in Dorking (1905-1953). A major influence in his life was the English folk song. A knowledgeable collector of folk songs, he was also a member of the Folksong Society and a supporter of the English Folk Dance Society. Vaughan Williams wrote various articles and books, including National Music (1935), and composed numerous arrange­ments of folk songs; many of his compositions show the impact of folk rhythms and melodic modes. His original compositions cover nearly all musical genres, from orchestral symphonies and concertos to choral works, from songs to operas, and from chamber music to music for films. Vaughan Williams's church music includes anthems; choral-orchestral works, such as Magnificat (1932), Dona Nobis Pacem (1936), and Hodie (1953); and hymn tune settings for organ. But most important to the history of hymnody, he was music editor of the most influential British hymnal at the beginning of the twentieth century, The English Hymnal (1906), and coeditor (with Martin Shaw) of Songs of Praise (1925, 1931) and the Oxford Book of Carols (1928). Marty Haugen

b. 1950 Composer of "GLORIA (Mass of Creation)" in Voices Together Marty Haugen (b. 1950), is a prolific liturgical composer with many songs included in hymnals across the liturgical spectrum of North American hymnals and beyond, with many songs translated into different languages. He was raised in the American Lutheran Church, received a BA in psychology from Luther College, yet found his first position as a church musician in a Roman Catholic parish at a time when the Roman Catholic Church was undergoing profound liturgical and musical changes after Vatican II. Finding a vocation in that parish to provide accessible songs for worship, he continued to compose and to study, receiving an MA in pastoral studies at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul Minnesota. A number of liturgical settings were prepared for the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and more than 400 of his compositions are available from several publishers, especially GIA Publications, who also produced some 30 recordings of his songs. He is composer-in-residence at Mayflower Community Congregational Church in Minneapolis and continues to compose and travel to speak and teach at worship events around the world. Emily Brink

Stuart Townend

Author of "Kyrie eleison, Have Mercy" in Voices Together Stuart Townend (b. 1963) grew up in West Yorkshire, England, the youngest son of an Anglican vicar. He started learning piano at a young age, and began writing music at age 22. He has produced albums for Keith Routledge and Vinesong, among many others, and has also released eight solo albums to date. Some of his better-known songs include “How Deep the Father’s Love,” “The King of Love,” and “The Power of the Cross.” He continues to work closely with friends Keith and Kristyn Getty, and is currently a worship leader in Church of Christ the King in Brighton, where he lives with wife Caroline, and children Joseph, Emma and Eden. b. 1974 Author of "Kyrie eleison, Have Mercy" in Voices Together Keith Getty (b. December 16, 1974) is a world-renowned modern hymn writer. Keith developed a passion for writing good songs for the church in his twenties, and began writing for his small Baptist church. Johann G. Naumann

Dresden, 1801 Evangelical Lutheran Hymnal, 1908 ========================== Born: April 7, 1741, Blasewitz, Dresden, Germany. Died: October 23, 1801, Dresden, Germany. Buried: Eliasfriedhof, Dresden, Germany. Naumann received his musical training in his town school, where he learned piano and organ. Later, he studied at the Kreuzschule in Dresden and was a member of the Dresden Kreuzchor. In Dresden, he learned from the organist and cantor of the Kreuzschule, Gottfried August Homilius, a student of Bach. In May 1757, he traveled to Italy with Swedish violinist Anders Wesström. Composer Giuseppe Tartini encountered Naumann in 1762 and took an interest in his work. Later that year, Naumann made his debut as an opera composer in Venice with Il Tesoro Insidiato. After his successful 1764 production of Li Creduti Spiriti, he was engaged as the second church composer at the Dresden court, on the recommendation of composer Johann Adolf Hasse. In 1777, as a result of negotiations by Swedish diplomat Count Löwenhjelm, Naumann was appointed to reform the Stockholm Hovkapell and help King Gustavus III in his opera plans. His work in Sweden led to the 1782 production of his opera Cora och Alonzo at the inauguration of the new opera house in Stockholm, and the 1786 production of Gustaf Wasa, based on an idea of the king for a Royal Swedish Opera. After a period as guest composer in Copenhagen (1785-56), he returned to Dresden, where he became Oberkapellmeister. In 1792, Naumann married Catarina von Grodtschilling, daughter of a Danish vice-admiral. Nelsie T. Johnson

1912 - 2009 Arranger of "AMEN" in Voices Together Nelsie T. Johnson was born in Greer, South Carolina, where she resided. She is a retired school teacher who continues to serve as choir director, organist, and pianist for Presbyterian churches in the Greenville and Spartanburg, South Carolina, area.
