Will L. Thompson

1847 - 1909 Person Name: W. L. T. Hymnal Number: 202 Author of "Lead Me Gently Home, Father" in Echoes from Glory Will Lamartine Thompson (1847-1909) Born: November 7, 1847, East Liverpool, Ohio. Died: September 20, 1909, New York, New York. Buried: Riverview Cemetery, East Liverpool, Ohio. Rebuffed in an early attempt to sell his songs to a commercial publisher, Thompson started his own publishing company. He later expanded, opening a store to sell pianos, organs and sheet music. Both a lyricist and composer, he ensured he would always remember words or melodies that came to him at odd times: "No matter where I am, at home or hotel, at the store or traveling, if an idea or theme comes to me that I deem worthy of a song, I jot it down in verse. In this way I never lose it." Thompson took ill during a tour of Europe, and his family cut short their travels to return home. He died a few weeks later. John R. Sweney

1837 - 1899 Person Name: J. R. Sweney Hymnal Number: 78 Author of "In the secret of his presence" in Echoes from Glory John R. Sweney (1837-1899) was born in West Chester, Pennsylvania, and exhibited musical abilities at an early age. At nineteen he was studying with a German music teacher, leading a choir and glee club, and performing at children’s entertainments. By twenty-two he was teaching at a school in Dover, Delaware. Soon thereafter, he was put in charge of the band of the Third Delaware Regiment of the Union Army for the duration of the Civil War. After the war, he became Professor of Music at the Pennsylvania Military Academy, and director of Sweney’s Cornet Band. He eventually earned Bachelor and Doctor of Music degrees at the Academy. Sweney began composing church music in 1871 and became well-known as a leader of large congregations. His appreciators stated “Sweney knows how to make a congregation sing” and “He had great power in arousing multitudes.” He also became director of music for a large Sunday school at the Bethany Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia of which John Wanamaker was superintendent (Wanamaker was the founder of the first major department store in Philadelphia). In addition to his prolific output of hymn melodies and other compositions, Sweney edited or co-edited about sixty song collections, many in collaboration with William J. Kirkpatrick. D. S. Warner

1842 - 1895 Hymnal Number: 221 Author of "I Know My Name is There" in Echoes from Glory Warner, Daniel Sidney. (near Marshallville, Wayne County, Ohio, 1842--1895). Church of God. Reared on an Ohio farm. During the Civil War, he substituted for a brother. Later he taught school. He attended Oberlin College briefly in 1865. By 1867 he was licensed to preach by the Western Ohio Eldership of the Church of God (Winebrennerian). His experience in preaching was gained on circuits in Nebraska and Ohio. In 1874 he was in trouble with the Eldership for preaching entire sanctification. Soon he joined the Indiana Eldership. In 1881 he was in trouble with this Eldership over sectism. Warner was an associate editor of the Herals of Gospel Freedom in 1878. this paper was merged with the Pilgrim about 1881, and the new paper was called the Gospel Trumpet, with Warner as its editor. Warner was forced to move the paper about, seeing for firm financial foundations. The publishing work was at last established in Grand Junction, Michigan, enabling Warner to travel more extensively with a group of evangelists. Warner's time was spent in editing the Trumpet, writing books, tracts, and songs, and making evangelistic tours of the United States. --John W.V. Obviously, the hymns attributed to "Author Unknown" "Unknown" or "Anonymous" could have been written by many people over a span of many centuries.

1847 - 1929 Hymnal Number: 154 Composer of "[Oh, do not let the word depart]" in Echoes from Glory James Calvin Bushey USA 1847-1929. Born in Arendtsville, PA, Bushey was a singing teacher who lived in Ohio during the latter 19th century. He compiled several music collections, including “The Chorus Class” (1879), “Sparkling Gems” (1880), “Choral Climax” (1886), and “Magneic Melodies” (1892), all published by the Music firm of Will L. 1869 - 1952 Person Name: Andrew L. Byers Hymnal Number: 125 Composer of "[Perishing souls at stake today!]" in Echoes from Glory Andrew Linnaeus Byers was born on August 26, 1869 in Albany, Illinois. Byers’ mother was song writer Nancy Byers. In 1890 he became involved with Daniel Warner & Barney Warren in evangelistic work; later joined the Gospel Trumpet publishing company as music editor for a year. He left that work because of health problems and worked as an evangelist and pastor in Idaho & Oregon before taking a pastorate in Sacramento, California, in 1934. He died on November 9, 1952 in Sacramento, California. His works include: Birth of a Reformation: The Life and Labors of D. S. Warner, 1922 NN, Hymnary.

Josephine Pollard

1834 - 1892 Person Name: Josepine Pollard Hymnal Number: 30 Author of "I Stood Outside the Gate" in Echoes from Glory Josephine Pollard USA 1834-1892. Born at NYC, NY, one of seven children and daughter of an architect, she attended an exclusive girls school, Spingler Institute, and was a lifelong member of the Presbyterian Church. She was a founding member of the professional women’s club, Sorosis. She never married. She became an author, poet, and hymnist, writing many children’s books and for children’s magazines, including Harper’s, Scribner’s, and the New York Ledger. She wrote 44 books, mostly religious, for children, but also about history, birds, sports and games, and adventure stories. She also wrote 100+ hymn lyrics as well. She worked as an editor for the Sunday School Times and for the Methodist Book Concern, where she edited a magazine for African Americans. Her children’s books include: “History of the U.S.” (1884); “The life of George Washington” ; “The life of Christ for young people”; “History of the New Testament in words of one syllable” (1899); “History of the Old Testament in words of one syllable” (1899); “Bible stories for children” (1899). She was in poor health in her latter years. She died at NYC, NY. McIntosh ========== Rigdon (Robert) McCoy McIntosh USA 1836-1899 Born at Maury County, TN, into a farming family, he attended Jackson College in Columbia, TN, graduating in 1854. He studied music under Asa Everett in Richmond, VA, and became a traveling singing school teacher. He also served briefly in the Civil War. He wrote several hymns during this period of his life. In 1860 he married Sarah McGlasson, and they had a daughter, Loulie Everett. In 1875 he was appointed head of the Vanderbilt University Music Department in Nashville, TN. In 1877 he joined the faculty of Emory College, Oxford, GA. In 1895 he left Emory College to devote his time to the R M McIntosh Publishing Company. He also served as music editor of the Methodist Episcopal Church South Publishing House for over 30 years. His song book publications include: “Good news” (1876), “Light & life” (1881), “Prayer & praise” (1883), “New life” (1879), “New life #2” (1886), and “Songs of service” (1896).
