Spirit blest, Who art adored

Author: Richard F. Littledale Meter: 7.7.7.6 Appears in 40 hymnals Lyrics: Spirit blest, who art adored With the Father and the Word, One eternal God and Lord; Hear us, Holy Spirit. Holy Spirit, heavenly Dove, Dew descending from above, Breath of life, and fire of love; Hear us, Holy Spirit. Thou by whom the Virgin bore Him whom heaven and earth adore, Sent our nature to restore; Hear us, Holy Spirit. Thou whom Jesus, from his throne, Gave to cheer and help his own, That they might not be alone; Hear us, Holy Spirit. Thou whose sound apostles heard, Thou whose power their spirit stirred, Giving them thy living Word; Hear us, Holy Spirit. Thou whose grace the Church doth fill, Showing her God's perfect will, Making Jesus present still; Hear us, Holy Spirit. All thy sevenfold gifts bestow, Gifts of wisdom God to know, Gifts of strength to meet the foe; Hear us, Holy Spirit. All our evil passions kill, Bend aright our stubborn will; Though we grieve thee, patient still; Hear us, Holy Spirit. Come to raise us when we fall, And when snares our souls enthrall, Lead us back with gentle call; Hear us, Holy Spirit. Come to strengthen all the weak, Give thy courage to the meek, Teach our faltering tongues to speak; Hear us, Holy Spirit. Come to aid the souls who yearn More of truth divine to learn, And with deeper love to burn; Hear us, Holy Spirit. Keep us in the narrow way, Warn us when we go astray, Plead within us when we pray; Hear us, Holy Spirit. Holy, loving, as thou art, Come, and live within our heart; Nevermore from us depart; Hear us, Holy Spirit. Amen. Topics: Whitsunday; Sunday Schools Whitsunday Used With Tune: EVELYN

William F. Sherwin

1826 - 1888 Person Name: W. F. S. Composer of "[Spirit blessed, who art adored]" in Heart and Voice Sherwin, William Fisk, an American Baptist, was born at Buckland, Massachusetts, March 14,1826. His educational opportunities, so far as schools were concerned, were few, but he made excellent use of his time and surroundings. At fifteen he went to Boston and studied music under Dr. Mason: In due course he became a teacher of vocal music, and held several important appointments in Massachusetts; in Hudson and Albany, New York County, and then in New York City. Taking special interest in Sunday Schools, he composed carols and hymn-tunes largely for their use, and was associated with the Rev. R. Lowry and others in preparing Bright Jewels, and other popular Sunday School hymn and tune books. A few of his melodies are known in Great Britain through I. D. Sankey's Sacred Songs and Solos, where they are given with his signature. His hymnwriting was limited. The following pieces are in common use:— 1. Grander than ocean's story (1871). The Love of God. 2. Hark, bark, the merry Christmas bells. Christmas Carol. 3. Lo, the day of God is breaking. The Spiritual Warfare. 4. Wake the song of joy and gladness. Sunday School or Temperance Anniversary. 5. Why is thy faith, 0 Child of God, so small. Safety in Jesus. Mr. Sherwin died at Boston, Massachusetts, April 14, 1888. -- John Julian, Dictionary of Hymnology (1907) ================== Sherwin, W. F., p. 1055, i. Another hymn from his Bright Jewels, 1869, p. 68, is "Sound the battle cry" (Christian Courage), in the Sunday School Hymnary, 1905, and several other collections. --John Julian, Dictionary of Hymnology, New Supplement (1907)

Arthur Sullivan

1842 - 1900 Person Name: Arthur S. Sullivan Composer of "EVELYN" in The New Christian Hymnal Arthur Seymour Sullivan (b Lambeth, London. England. 1842; d. Westminster, London, 1900) was born of an Italian mother and an Irish father who was an army bandmaster and a professor of music. Sullivan entered the Chapel Royal as a chorister in 1854. He was elected as the first Mendelssohn scholar in 1856, when he began his studies at the Royal Academy of Music in London. He also studied at the Leipzig Conservatory (1858-1861) and in 1866 was appointed professor of composition at the Royal Academy of Music. Early in his career Sullivan composed oratorios and music for some Shakespeare plays. However, he is best known for writing the music for lyrics by William S. Gilbert, which produced popular operettas such as H.M.S. Pinafore (1878), The Pirates of Penzance (1879), The Mikado (1884), and Yeomen of the Guard (1888). These operettas satirized the court and everyday life in Victorian times. Although he composed some anthems, in the area of church music Sullivan is best remembered for his hymn tunes, written between 1867 and 1874 and published in The Hymnary (1872) and Church Hymns (1874), both of which he edited. He contributed hymns to A Hymnal Chiefly from The Book of Praise (1867) and to the Presbyterian collection Psalms and Hymns for Divine Worship (1867). A complete collection of his hymns and arrangements was published posthumously as Hymn Tunes by Arthur Sullivan (1902). Sullivan steadfastly refused to grant permission to those who wished to make hymn tunes from the popular melodies in his operettas. Bert Polman
