It came upon the midnight clear

Author: Edmund H. Sears, 1810-1876 Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 878 hymnals Lyrics: 1. It came upon the midnight clear, that glorious song of old, from angels bending near the earth to touch their harps of gold: "Peace on the earth, good will to men, from heaven's all-gracious King." The world in solemn stillness lay, to hear the angels sing. 2. Still through the cloven skies they come with peaceful wings unfurled, and still their heavenly music floats o'er all the weary world; above its sad and lowly plains they bend on hovering wing, and ever o'er its Babel-sounds the blessed angels sing. 3. Yet with the woes of sin and strife the world has suffered long; beneath the heavenly hymn have rolled two thousand years of wrong; and warring humankind hears not the tidings which they bring; O hush the noise and cease your strife and hear the angels sing! 4. For lo! the days are hastening on, by prophets seen of old, when with the ever-circling years shall come the time foretold, when peace shall over all the earth its ancient splendors fling, and the whole world give back the song which now the angels sing. Used With Tune: NOEL

I'll praise my Maker while I've breath

Author: Isaac Watts, 1674-1748; John Wesley, 1703-1791 Meter: 8.8.8.8.8.8 Appears in 527 hymnals Lyrics: 1 I’ll praise my Maker while I’ve breath; and when my voice is lost in death, praise shall employ my nobler powers. My days of praise shall ne’er be past while life and thought and being last, or immortality endures. 2 How happy they whose hopes rely on Israel's God, who made the sky and earth and seas with all their train; whose truth for ever stands secure, who saves the oppressed, and feeds the poor. And none shall find his promise vain. 3 The Lord pours eyesight on the blind; the Lord supports the fainting mind and sends the laboring conscience peace. He helps the stranger in distress, the widowed and the fatherless, and grants the prisoner sweet release. 4 I’ll praise him while he lends me breath; and when my voice is lost in death, praise shall employ my nobler powers. My days of praise shall ne'er be past while life and thought and being last, or immortality endures. Topics: Praise to God Scripture: Psalm 146 Used With Tune: OLD 113TH

I bind unto myself today

Author: Patrick, 372-466; Cecil Frances Alexander, 1818-1895 Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 68 hymnals Lyrics: 1 I bind unto myself today the strong Name of the Trinity, by invocation of the same, the Three in One, and One in Three. 2 I bind this day to me for ever, by power of faith, Christ's Incarnation; his baptism in the Jordan river; his death on cross for my salvation; his bursting from the spiced tomb; his riding up the heavenly way; his coming at the day of doom: I bind unto myself today. 3 I bind unto myself the power of the great love of cherubim; the sweet "Well done" in judgment hour; the service of the seraphim; confessors' faith, apostles' word, the patriarchs' prayers, the prophets' scrolls; all good deeds done unto the Lord, and purity of virgin souls. 4 I bind unto myself today the virtues of the starlit heaven the glorious sun's life-giving ray, the whiteness of the moon at even, the flashing of the lightning free, the whirling wind's tempestuous shocks, the stable earth, the deep salt sea, around the old eternal rocks. 5 I bind unto myself today the power of God to hold and lead, his eye to watch, his might to stay, his ear to hearken, to my need; the wisdom of my God to teach, his hand to guide, his shield to ward; the word of God to give me speech, his heavenly host to be my guard. 6 Christ be with me, Christ within me, Christ behind me, Christ before me, Christ beside me, Christ to win me, Christ to comfort and restore me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me, Christ in quiet, Christ in danger, Christ in hearts of all that love me, Christ in mouth of friend and stranger. 7 I bind unto myself the Name, the strong Name of the Trinity, by invocation of the same, the Three in One, and One in Three. Of whom all nature hath creation, eternal Father, Spirit, Word: praise to the Lord of my salvation, salvation is of Christ the Lord. Topics: The Holy Trinity Used With Tune: ST. Author: John Bowring, 1792-1872 Meter: 8.7.8.7 Appears in 1,520 hymnals Lyrics: 1 In the cross of Christ I glory, towering o’er the wrecks of time; All the light of sacred story gathers round its head sublime. 2 When the woes of life o’ertake me, hopes deceive, and fears annoy, never shall the cross forsake me: lo, it glows with peace and joy. 3 When the sun of bliss is beaming light and love upon my way, from the cross the radiance streaming adds new luster to the day. 4 Bane and blessing, pain and pleasure, by the cross are sanctified; peace is there that knows no measure, joys that through all time abide. 5 In the cross of Christ I glory, towering o’er the wrecks of time; all the light of sacred story gathers round its head sublime. Immortal, invisible, God only wise

Author: Walter Chalmers Smith, 1824-1908 Meter: 11.11.11.11 Appears in 212 hymnals Lyrics: 1 Immortal, invisible, God only wise, in light inaccessible hid from our eyes, most blessed, most glorious, the Ancient of Days, almighty, victorious, thy great Name we praise. 2 Unresting, unhasting, and silent as light, nor wanting, nor wasting, thou rulest in might; thy justice like mountains high soaring above thy clouds, which are fountains of goodness and love. 3 To all life thou givest, to both great and small; in all life thou livest, the true life of all; we blossom and flourish, like leaves on the tree, then wither and perish; but nought changeth thee. 4 Thou reignest in glory, thou rulest in light, thine angels adore thee, all veiling their sight; all laud we would render: O help us to see 'tis only the splendor of light hideth thee. I know not where the road will lead

Author: Evelyn Atwater Cummins, 1891-1971 Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 8 hymnals Lyrics: 1 I know not where the road will lead I follow day by day, or where it ends: I only know I walk the King's highway. I know not if the way is long, and no one else can say; but rough or smooth, up hill or down, I walk the King's highway. 2 And some I love have reached the end, but some with me may stay, their faith and hope still guiding me: I walk the King's highway. The way is truth, the way is love, for light and strength I pray, and through the years of life, to God I walk the King's highway. 3 The countless hosts lead on before, I must not fear nor stray; with them, the pilgrims of the faith, I walk the King's highway. Through light and dark the road leads on till dawns the endless day, when I shall know why in this life I walk the King's highway. Topics: The Christian Life Used With Tune: LARAMIE
