"No other name"

Author: Isaac Watts Appears in 601 hymnals Scripture: John 1:29 First Line: Not all the blood of beasts Lyrics: 1 Not all the blood of beasts On Jewish altars slain, Could give the guilty conscience peace, Or wash away the stain. 2 But Christ the heavenly Lamb Takes all our sins away, A sacrifice of nobler name And richer blood than they. 3 My faith would lay her hand On that dear head of thine, While like a penitent I stand, And there confess my sin. 4 My soul looks back to see The burdens thou didst bear, When hanging on the cursed tree, And hopes her guilt was there. 5 Believing, we rejoice To see the curse remove; We bless the Lamb with cheerful voice, And sing his dying love. Topics: Atonement Necessary; Christ Blood of; Christ Lamb; Christ Substitute; Conscience; Dependence On Grace Used With Tune: GORTON

Now, my tongue, the mystery telling

Author: St Thomas Aquinas, 1227-1274; J. M. Neale ; Edward Caswall Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.7 Appears in 51 hymnals Scripture: John 1:14 Lyrics: PART ONE - 1 Now, my tongue, the mystery telling of the glorious body sing, and the blood, all price excelling, which the Gentiles' Lord and King, in a Virgin's womb once dwelling, shed for this world's ransoming. 2 Given for us, and condescending to be born for us below, he, with us in converse blending, dwelt the seed of truth to sow, till he closed with wondrous ending his most patient life of woe. 3 That last night, at supper lying, 'mid the Twelve, his chosen band, Jesus, with the law complying, keeps the feast its rites demand; then, more precious food supplying, gives himself with his own hand. 4 Word-made-flesh, true bread he maketh by his word his flesh to be, wine his blood; which whoso taketh must from carnal thoughts be free: faith alone, though sight forsaketh, shows true hearts the mystery. PART TWO - 5 Therefore we, before him bending, this great sacrament revere: types and shadows have their ending, for the newer rite is here; faith, our outward sense befriending, makes our inward vision clear. 6 Glory let us give and blessing to the Father and the Son, honour, might, and praise addressing, while eternal ages run; ever too his love confessing, who, from both, with both is One. Amen. Topics: Holy Communion; Maundy Thursday Used With Tune: PANGE LINGUA

Meter: Irregular Appears in 396 hymnals Scripture: John 1:3 First Line: The first Nowell the angel did say Lyrics: 1 The first Nowell the angel did say was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay; in fields where they lay a-keeping their sheep on a cold winter's night that was so deep: [Refrain:] Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, born is the King of Israel. 2 They lookèd up and saw a star, shining in the east, beyond them far; and to the earth it gave great light, and so it continued both day and night. [Refrain] 3 And by the light of that same star three wise men came from country far; to seek for a king was their intent, and to follow the star wherever it went. [Refrain] 4 This star drew nigh to the north-west, o'er Bethlehem it took its rest, and there it did both stop and stay right over the place where Jesus lay. [Refrain] 5 Then entered in those wise men three, full reverently upon their knee, and offered there in his presence their gold and myrrh and frankincense. [Refrain] 6 Then let us all with one accord sing praises to our heavenly Lord, that hath made heaven and earth of naught, and with his blood mankind hath bought. [Refrain] Topics: Life in Christ Christ Incarnate - Christmas and Epiphany; Christian Year Season of Epiphany Used With Tune: THE FIRST NOWELL Text Sources: English traditional carol
