George J. Elvey

1816 - 1893 Meter: 8.8.8.6 Composer of "ST. CRISPIN" in The Hymnal George Job Elvey (b. Canterbury, England, 1816; d. Windlesham, Surrey, England, 1893) As a young boy, Elvey was a chorister in Canterbury Cathedral. Living and studying with his brother Stephen, he was educated at Oxford and at the Royal Academy of Music. At age nineteen Elvey became organist and master of the boys' choir at St. George Chapel, Windsor, where he remained until his retirement in 1882. He was frequently called upon to provide music for royal ceremonies such as Princess Louise's wedding in 1871 (after which he was knighted). Elvey also composed hymn tunes, anthems, oratorios, and service music. Bert Polman

Samuel Sebastian Wesley

1810 - 1876 Meter: 8.8.8.6 Composer of "HARBRIDGE" in The Cyber Hymnal Samuel Sebastian Wesley (b. London, England, 1810; d. Gloucester, England, 1876) was an English organist and composer. The grandson of Charles Wesley, he was born in London, and sang in the choir of the Chapel Royal as a boy. He learned composition and organ from his father, Samuel, completed a doctorate in music at Oxford, and composed for piano, organ, and choir. He was organist at Hereford Cathedral (1832-1835), Exeter Cathedral (1835-1842), Leeds Parish Church (1842­-1849), Winchester Cathedral (1849-1865), and Gloucester Cathedral (1865-1876). Wesley strove to improve the standards of church music and the status of church musicians; his observations and plans for reform were published as A Few Words on Cathedral Music and the Music System of the Church (1849). He was the musical editor of Charles Kemble's A Selection of Psalms and Hymns (1864) and of the Wellburn Appendix of Original Hymns and Tunes (1875) but is best known as the compiler of The European Psalmist (1872), in which some 130 of the 733 hymn tunes were written by him. Ralph Vaughan Williams

1872 - 1958 Meter: 8.8.8.6 Harmonizer of "QUEM PASTORES" in The New Century Hymnal Through his composing, conducting, collecting, editing, and teaching, Ralph Vaughan Williams (b. Down Ampney, Gloucestershire, England, October 12, 1872; d. Westminster, London, England, August 26, 1958) became the chief figure in the realm of English music and church music in the first half of the twentieth century. His education included instruction at the Royal College of Music in London and Trinity College, Cambridge, as well as additional studies in Berlin and Paris. During World War I he served in the army medical corps in France. Vaughan Williams taught music at the Royal College of Music (1920-1940), conducted the Bach Choir in London (1920-1927), and directed the Leith Hill Music Festival in Dorking (1905-1953). A major influence in his life was the English folk song. A knowledgeable collector of folk songs, he was also a member of the Folksong Society and a supporter of the English Folk Dance Society. Vaughan Williams wrote various articles and books, including National Music (1935), and composed numerous arrange­ments of folk songs; many of his compositions show the impact of folk rhythms and melodic modes. His original compositions cover nearly all musical genres, from orchestral symphonies and concertos to choral works, from songs to operas, and from chamber music to music for films. Vaughan Williams's church music includes anthems; choral-orchestral works, such as Magnificat (1932), Dona Nobis Pacem (1936), and Hodie (1953); and hymn tune settings for organ. But most important to the history of hymnody, he was music editor of the most influential British hymnal at the beginning of the twentieth century, The English Hymnal (1906), and coeditor (with Martin Shaw) of Songs of Praise (1925, 1931) and the Oxford Book of Carols (1928). F. F. Flemming

Born in Neuhausen, Erzgebirge, Germany, he studied medicine at Wittenberg, 1796-1800, Jena, Vienna, and Trieste. He practiced as a physician in Berlin until his death, but, musically, is remembered for his setting of Horace's ode beginning “Integer Vitae”, from which the tune “Flemming” is adapted. He was active in musical circles and composed many songs for a male vocal ensemble, “Liedertafel”. He died in Berlin. John Perry

William Y. Fullerton

Born at Belfast, Northern Ireland, he was raised Presbyterian, but became a Baptist preacher, administrator, and writer. When a young man he was influenced by the preaching of evangelist, Charles Spurgeon, who became his friend and mentor. He became pastor of the Melbourne Hall Baptiest Church. Thousands of people came to Christ under his ministry. He was tall, but very a[pproachable and kind. Fullerton served as President of the Baptist Union and Home Secretary of the Baptist Missionary Society. He spoke frequently at Keswick Conventions. He published works, including biographies of John Bunyan, Charles Spurgeon, James William Condell Fegan, and Frederick Brotherton Meyer. He also wrote missionary histories and devotionals. Rae E. Whitney

1927 - 2023 Person Name: Rae Whitney Meter: 8.8.8.6 Author of "Grant Us Wisdom to Perceive You" in The New Century Hymnal Rae E. Whitney, 96, of Scottsbluff died Thursday, November 16, 2023, at the Residency in Scottsbluff. Her memorial service will be held 10:00 A.M. Monday, November 27, 2023, at St. Francis Episcopal Church with Reverend Erin Rath officiating. Interment of her ashes will follow at West Lawn Cemetery in Gering. Memorials may be made to the Lied Scottsbluff Public Library or to the church. Rae was born at Chippenham, Wiltshire, England May 21, 1927, the only daughter of Alice Martha “Pat” Davis and Arthur James Phillips. Educated at Chippenham Grammar School and the University of Bristol, she received her B.A. (Englis Honors) degree in 1948 and Certificate of Education in 1949. She was lady President of Bristol University Branch of the Student Christian Movement 1947-48. Rae taught in secondary schools in Bicester, Oxfordshire in Wotton-under-edge, Gloucestershire and in London. During this time, she also served as a lay preacher in various village chapels. She had a life-long concern for the greater understanding between churches, and from 1958-60 she lived at St. Basil’s House in London as a resident Secretary of the Fellowship of St. Alban and St. Sergius, working both with Eastern Orthodox Churches and those of the west. In June of 1960, on a coach tour of Italy, heading for the Passion Play in Oberammergau, Austria Rae met the Rev Clyde E. Whitney, Rector of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, Scottsbluff, NE. They were married in Chippenham on December 31, 1960. Scottsbluff then became her home. The Whitneys started the local observance of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity in 1962 and during the mid-sixties worked to establish The Retreat House of the Transfiguration at Bayard. After Father Whitney’s retirement in 1969, they served the English-speaking congregation in Guatemala City, Central America for 12 months. From 1979-85 they were volunteer local coordinators for the American Bible Society. During his 23 years of retirement, when Clyde was called to serve various churches in Nebraska and Wyoming, Rae was licensed to help her husband as a lay reader and eucharistic minister. She was on the Board of Friends of the Scottsbluff Library for a long time and served on the Editorial Board of Bosom Buddies Network, Regional West Medical Center. She led several weekly Bible classes for many years. She was elected President of Church Women United, Scotts Bluff County 1967-68 and CWU State Vice President 1981-82. She became Diocesan State President of the Episcopal Church Women 1976-77 and served on the national Episcopal Church’s Women’s Triennial Committees 1973-79. She was appointed Worship Chairman for the 1979 Triennial Denver. Soon after her arrival here, Rae became interested in local history and in the 1980’s wrote “A Portrait of Dr. Georgia Arbuckle Fix”, which has been presented over fifty times in the region. Rae was also a free-lance writer of reviews, articles, and poems, but was most widely known for her hymn writing. Of her several hundred hymn texts, some have found their way into several denominational hymnals and supplements in the United States, Canada, Scotland, England, Hong Kong, and Australia. Four collections of her hymns have been published by Selah Publishing Co. Rae was a member of St. Francis Episcopal Church (formerly St. Andrew’s), YMCA, Friends of the Library, American Association of University Women, the Cooperative Ministries Council, Church Women United, Fraternity of Prayer for Christian Unity, Fellowship of St. Alban and St. Sergius and the Hymn Societies of the US, Canada, Great Britain, and Ireland. After the Whitneys moved to Northfield Villa, Gering in 1988, Rae soon became editor of the Villa’s newsletter. Clyde died April 22, 1992, and in 1993 Rae moved to the Residency in Scottsbluff and continued to edit the monthly newsletter for both retirement communities. Rae was preceded in death by her husband; parents; her young brother Kenneth and her special friend, Edward Doemland of Milwaukee, WI. She is survived by cousins in England and many valued friends, especially Eva Carne, of Ellensburg, WA and Jane Wisniewski, of Scottsbluff, NE. --Obituary

R. E. Hudson

1843 - 1901 Person Name: Ralph E. Hudson Meter: 8.8.8.6 Author of "I'll Live for Him" in Baptist Hymnal 2008 Ralph Hudson (1843-1901) was born in Napoleon, OH. He served in the Union Army in the Civil War. After teaching for five years at Mt. Union College in Alliance he established his own publishing company in that city. He was a strong prohibitionist and published The Temperance Songster in 1886. He compiled several other collections and supplied tunes for gospel songs, among them Clara Tear Williams' "All my life long I had panted" (Satisfied). See 101 More Hymn Stories, K. Ira David Sankey

1840 - 1908 Meter: 8.8.8.6 Composer of "TAKE ME AS I AM" in 찬송과 예배 = Chansong gwa yebae = Come, Let Us Worship Sankey, Ira David, was born in Edinburgh, Pennsylvania, in 1840, of Methodist parents. About 1856 he removed with his parents to New Castle, Pennsylvania, where he became a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Four years afterwards he became the Superintendent of a large Sunday School in which he commenced his career of singing sacred songs and solos. Mr. Moody met with him and heard him sing at the International Convention of the Young Men's Christian Association, at Indianapolis, and through Mr. Moody's persuasion he joined him in his work at Chicago. After some two or three years' work in Chicago, they sailed for England on June 7, 1872, and held their first meeting at York a short time afterwards, only eight persons being present. Their subsequent work in Great Britain and America is well known. Mr. Sankey's special duty was the singing of sacred songs and solos at religious gatherings, a practice which was in use in America for some time before he adopted it. His volume of Sacred Songs and Solos is a compilation from various sources, mainly American and mostly in use before. Although known as Sankey and Moody’s Songs, only one song, "Home at last, thy labour done" is by Mr. Sankey, and not one is by Mr. Moody. Mr. Sankey supplied several of the melodies. The English edition of the Sacred Songs & Solos has had an enormous sale; and the work as a whole is very popular for Home Mission services. During the past fifteen years Mr. Sankey's Sacred Songs and Solos have had a very large sale, which has justified him in increasing the number of songs and hymns, including " New Hymns and Solos," to 1200. In 1906 he published My Life and Sacred Songs (London : Morgan & Scott). In addition to the "Story of his Own Life," the work contains an account of the most popular of his solos, with interesting reminiscences of the spiritual awakening of many who were influenced through his singing of them in public. In this respect it corresponds in some measure with G. J. Stevenson's Methodist Hymn Book, &c, 1883 (p. 1094, i.). It is an addition to the Sacred Songs and Solos, which will be held in esteem by many. In addition to his hymn, noted on p. 994, ii., Mr. Sankey gives details of the following:— 1. Out of the shadow-land into the sunshine. [Heaven Anticipated.] Mr. Sankey's account of this hymn is:— "I wrote this hymn specially for the memorial service held for Mr. Moody in Carnegie Hall, where 1 also sang it as a solo. It is the last sacred song of which I wrote both the words and music. The idea was suggested by Mr. Moody's last words, 'Earth recedes; heaven opens before me . . . God is calling me, and I must go.' On account of its peculiar association with my fellow-labourer in the Gospel for so many years, the words are here given in full." The hymn follows on p. 185, in 3 stanzas of 4 lines and a chorus. 2. Rejoice! Rejoice! our King is coming, [Advent.] Mr. Sankey writes concerning this hymn:— "During one of my trips to Great Britain on the SS. City of Rome a storm raged on the sea. The wind was howling through the rigging, and waves like mountains of foam were breaking over the bow of the vessel. A great fear had fallen upon the passengers. When the storm was at its worst, we all thought we might soon go to the bottom of the sea. The conviction came to me that the Lord would be with us iu the trying hour, and sitting down in the reading room, I composed this hymn. Before reaching England the tune had formed itself in my mind, and on arriving in London I wrote it out, and had it published in Sacred Songs and Solos, where it is No. 524 in the edition. of 1888. From Mr. Sankey's autobiographical sketch we gather that he was born at Edinburgh, in Western Pennsylvania, Aug. 28, 1840, joined Mr. Moody in 1871, and visited England for the first time in 1873. The original of the Sacred Songs, &c, of 23 pieces only, was offered as a gift to the London publishers of P. Phillips's Hallowed Song, and declined by them. It was subsequently accepted by Mr. K. O. Morgan, of Morgan & Scott, and is now a volume of 1200 hymns. From a return kindly sent us by Messrs. Morgan & Scott, we find that the various issues of the Sacred Songs and Solos were:— In 1873, 24 pp.; 1874, 72 pp. ; 1876, 153 hymns; 1877, 271 hymns; 1881, 441 hymns; 1888, 750 hymns; 1903, 1200 hymns. In addition, The Christian Choir, which is generally associated with the Sacred Songs and Solos, was issued in 1884 with 75 hymns, and in 1896 with 281. In some hymnals, the editors noted that a hymn's author is unknown to them, and so this artificial "person" entry is used to reflect that fact. Obviously, the hymns attributed to "Author Unknown" "Unknown" or "Anonymous" could have been written by many people over a span of many centuries.

Edvard Grieg

1843 - 1907 Person Name: Edward H. Grieg Meter: 8.8.8.6 Arranged of "BEHOLD A HOST" in Christian Classics Ethereal Hymnary Edvard Hagerup Grieg Born at Bergen, Norway, of Scottish descent, son of a merchant and vice-consul in Bergen, his mother was a music teacher. He became a pianist and composer, with his standard classical repertoire known worldwide. He developed Norwegian folk music into his own compositions, helping to develop a national musical identity. As a child his mother taught him piano from age six. He attended several schools. His uncle, a Norwegian violinist, recognized his nephew’s talents at age 15 and urged his parents to send him to the Leigzig Conservatory in Germany. He enrolled there and concentrated on piano. He enjoyed the many concerts and recitals given in Leipzig. He disliked the discipline of the conservatory course of study, but he loved the organ, mandatory for piano students. In 1860 he survived a life-threatening lung disease, pleurisy and tuberculosis. Throughout life, his health was impaired by a destroyed left lung and disformity of his thoracic spine. He suffered numerous respiratory infections, and ultimately developed combined heart and lung failure. He was admitted many times for various spas and sanatoria in both Norway and abroad. Several of his doctors became close friends. In 1861 he made his debut as a concert pianist at Karlshamm, Sweden. He finished Leipzig studies in 1862 and held a concert in his hometown, playing Beethoven’s ‘Pathetique’ sonata. In 1863 he went to Copenhagen, Denmark, remaining there three years. There he met Danish composers and a fellow Norwegian composer, Rikard Nordraak, who wrote the Norwegian National Anthem. When Nordraak died in 1866, Grieg composed a funeral march in his honor. In 1867 Grieg married his first cousin, Nina Hagerup. Their only child, Alexandra, was born the following year. She died from meningitis at age two. In 1868 he wrote his Piano Concerto in A-minor. It was performed by Edmund Nuepert in Copenhagen because Grieg was in Norway at the time, fulfilling other commitments. In 1868 Franz Liszt, not yet having met Grieg, wrote a testimonial of him, resulting in Grieg’s obtaining a travel grant. The two met in Rome in 1870. Each was impressed with the other’s musical accomplishments. Grieg had close ties with the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra and became its leader 1880-1882. In 1888 Grieg met Tchaikovsky in Leipzig. He was struck by Tchaikovsky’s sadness. Tchaikovsky praised Grieg’s music. The Norwegian government awarded Grieg a pension. In 1903 he made gramophone recordings of his piano music in Paris, France. He also made live piano music rolls for the Hupfeld Phonola piano-player system and Weldt-Mignon reproducing system. He also worked with the Aeolian Company for its ‘Autograph Metro-style’ piano roll series, wherein he indicated the tempo mapping of many of his pieces. In 1906 he met pianist and composer, Percy Grainger, in London. Grainger was an admire of Grieg’s music, and they developed a strong empathy for each other. Grieg wrote of Grainger: “I have written Norwegian dances that no one in my country can play, and here comes this Australian who plays them as they ought to be played. He is a genius that we Scandinavians cannot do other than love.” Grieg and his wife considered themselves Unitarians, and attended that church denomination. When Grieg died after a long illness, at age 64, his funeral drew more than 30,000 people in his hometown, who came out to honor him. His own funeral march, in honor of Nordraak, was played, along with a 2nd march, by his friend, Johan Halvorsen, who married Grieg’s niece. Dale Grotenhuis

1931 - 2012 Meter: 8.8.8.6 Harmonizer of "ROK NOVY" in Psalter Hymnal (Gray) Dale Grotenhuis (b. Cedar Grove, WI, 1931; d. Jenison, Mi, August 17, 2012) was a member of the 1987 Psalter Hymnal 1987 Revision Committee, and was professor of music and director of choral music at Dordt College, Sioux Center, Iowa, from 1960 until he retired in 1994 to concentrate on composition. Educated at Calvin College; Michigan State University, Lansing; and Ohio State University, Columbus; he combined teaching with composition throughout his career and was a widely published composer of choral music. He also directed the Dordt choir in a large number of recordings, including many psalm arrangements found in the 1959 edition of the Psalter Hymnal. Before coming to Dordt, Grotenhuis taught music at Christian high schools in Washington and Michigan. Under his direction, the Dordt College concert choir participated in annual tours that took members throughout the United States, Canada and Europe. He loved the church and the music of the church. 1825 - 1916 Person Name: Thomas Levi, 1825-1916 Meter: 8.8.8.6 Author of "Fel, Fel Yr Wyf" in The Cyber Hymnal LEVI,THOMAS (1825-1916), Calvinistic Methodist minister, editor of Trysorfa y Plant, and author; born 12 Oct. 1825 at Penrhos near Ystradgynlais, son of John and Prudence Levi. He received his early education at a school kept by an old soldier at Ystradgynlais, and later, while still a boy, worked at Ynyscedwyn iron works. About 1846 he began to preach at Cwmgïedd chapel, Ystradgynlais. He was minister of Capel yr Ynys, Ystradgynlais, about 1855-60, of Philadelphia, Morriston, 1860-76, and of Tabernacle, Aberystwyth, 1876-1901. He married (1), Elizabeth Daniel of Cwmgïedd (d. 1871), and (2), 1873, Margaret, youngest daughter of Hugh and Catherine Jones of Coedmadoc, Tal-y-sarn, Caerns. He began his literary labours in 1853 and wrote thirty books. Today, the best known are: Hanes Prydain Fawr, 1862; Bywyd a Theithiau Livingstone, 1857; Gweddiau Teuluaidd, 1863; Hanesion y Beibl, 1870; Casgliad o Hen Farwnadau, 1872; Hanes y Beibl Cymraeg, 1876; Traethodau Bywgraffyddol, 1882 and after, published in a single volume entitled Cedyrn Cymru; Canmlwyddiant yr Ysgol Sabbothol, 1885. He also translated sixty books from English into Welsh, including Yr Anianydd Cristionogol1859; Crist a Gwroniaid y Byd Paganaidd, 1887. He co-operated with Dr. Joseph Parry in the production of ‘Cantata yr Adar,’ 1873; ‘Cantata Joseph,’ 1885; Hymnau a Thonau yr Ysgol Sabbothol, 1887, etc. But his chief literary achievement was the starting of Trysorfa y Plant, and its regular production every month for half a century- 1862-1911. Although this periodical was produced under the patronage of the Calvinistic Methodists, it was popular with every denomination. The circulation of Trysorfa y Plant, which ultimately reached 44,000 a month, was greater than had ever been known in Wales before. Its income was so great that it paid the entire cost of production of Y Drysorfa and Y Traethodydd. It was read by Welshmen all over the world and in it were published some of the earliest poems of Islwyn, Ceiriog, and others. Levi was moderator of the C.M. General Assembly in 1883 and of the South Wales Association in 1887. He played a prominent part in the setting up of monuments to Daniel Rowland, Thomas Charles, Williams of Pantycelyn, and bishop Morgan. He continued to preach until 1910 and to edit Trysorfa y Plant until 1911. He was nearly 91 when he d. 16 June 1916.
