Glorious Things of Thee Are Spoken

Author: John Newton (1725-1807) Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Appears in 1,299 hymnals Scripture: Exodus 16:2-15 Lyrics: 1 Glorious things of thee are spoken, Zion, city of our God; he whose word cannot be broken formed thee for his own abode. On the rock of ages founded, what can shake thy sure repose? With salvation's walls surrounded, thou mayest smile at all thy foes. 2 See! The streams of living waters, springing from eternal love, well supply thy sons and daughters and all fear of want remove. Who can faint, when such a river ever flows their thirst to assuage? Grace, which like the Lord, the giver, never fails from age to age. 3 Round each habitation hovering, see the cloud and fire appear for a glory and a covering -- showing that the Lord is near. Thus they march, the pillar leading, light by night, and shade by day; daily on the manna feeding which God gives them when they pray. 4 Saviour, if of Zion's city I through grace a member am, let the world deride or pity, I will glory in thy name. Fading is the world's best pleasure, all its boasted pomp or show: solid joys and lasting treasures none but Zion's children know. At the Lamb's high feast we sing

Author: Robert Campbell, 1814-1868 Meter: 7.7.7.7 D Appears in 186 hymnals Scripture: Exodus 16:11-16 Lyrics: 1 At the Lamb's high feast we sing praise to our victorious King, who hath washed us in the tide flowing from his piercèd side; praise we him, whose love divine gives his sacred blood for wine, gives his body for the feast, Christ the victim, Christ the priest. 2 Where the Paschal blood is poured, death's dark angel sheathes his sword; Israel's hosts triumphant go through the wave that drowns the foe. Praise we Christ, whose blood was shed, Paschal victim, Paschal bread; with sincerity and love eat we manna from above. 3 Mighty victim from the sky, hell's fierce powers beneath thee lie; thou hast conquered in the fight, thou hast brought us life and light. Now no more can death appal, now no more the grave enthral: thou hast opened paradise, and in thee thy saints shall rise. 4 Easter triumph, Easter joy, sin alone can this destroy; from sin's power do thou set free souls new-born, O Lord, in thee. Hymns of glory and of praise, risen Lord, to thee we raise; holy Father, praise to thee, with the Spirit, ever be.
