Saints chastised, and Sinners destroyed; or Instructive Affilctions

Appears in 30 hymnals Topics: Saints chastised and Sinners destroyed; Saints chastised and Sinners destroyed First Line: O God! to whom revenge belongs Lyrics: 1 O God! to whom revenge belongs, Proclaim thy wrath aloud; Let sovereign power redress our wrongs, Let justice smite the proud. 2 They say, "The Lord nor sees nor hears;" When will the vain be wise? Can he be deaf, who form'd their ears? Or blind, who made their eyes? 3 He knows their impious thoughts are vain, And they shall feel his power; His wrath shall pierce their souls with pain In some surprising hour. 4 But if thy saints deserve rebuke, Thou hast a gentler rod; Thy providence, thy sacred book Shall make them know their God. 5 Blest is the man thy hands chastise, And to his duty draw; Thy scourges make thy children wise When they forget thy law. 6 But God will ne’er cast off his saints, Nor his own promise break; He pardons his inheritance For their Redeemer’s sake. Scripture: Psalm 94:1-2

Give Thanks unto the Lord Jehovah

Author: Anonymous Meter: 9.8.9.8 D Appears in 4 hymnals Topics: Chastisement First Line: Give thanks unto the Lord, Jehovah Lyrics: 1 Give thanks unto the Lord, Jehovah, for he is good, O praise his name! Let Israel say: "The Lord be praised;, his mercy ever is the same." Let Aaron's house now praise Jehovah; the Lord is good, O praise his name. Let all that fear the Lord extol him; his mercy ever is the same. 2 In a large place the Lord has set me; in my distress he heard my cry. I will not fear; the Lord is with me - What can man do, when God is nigh? The Lord is chief among my helpers; and I shall see my foes o'erthrown: far better than in man or princes, my trust I place in God alone. 3 I shall not die, but live, declaring the works of God, who tried me sore, and chastened me, but in his mercy not unto death has giv'n me o'er. The gates of righteousness set open, the gate of God! I'll enter in to praise you, Lord, who pray'r have answered, and have saved me from all my sin. 4 The stone - O Lord, it is your doing - the stone, the builders did despise, is made the headstone of the corner, and it is marv'lous in our eyes. This is the day, of days most glorious, the Lord hath made; we'll joy and sing. Send now prosperity, we pray, Lord; and, O our God, salvation bring! Scripture: Psalm 118:1-25 Used With Tune: RENDEZ A DIEU

Meter: 11.11.11.11 Appears in 2,131 hymnals Topics: Chastisements Lyrics: 1 How firm a foundation, ye saints of the Lord, Is laid for your faith in His excellent Word! What more can He say than to you He has said, To you who for refuge to Jesus have fled? To you who for refuge to Jesus have fled? 2 "Fear not, I am with thee, O be not dismayed; For I am thy God, I will still give thee aid; I'll strengthen thee, help thee, and cause thee to stand, Upheld by My gracious, omnipotent hand, Upheld by My gracious, omnipotent hand. 3 "When through the deep waters I call thee to go, The rivers of sorrow shall not overflow; For I will be with thee thy troubles to bless, And sanctify to thee thy deepest distress, And sanctify to thee thy deepest distress. 4 "When through fiery trials thy pathway shall lie, My grace all-sufficient shall be thy supply; The flame shall not hurt thee; I only design Thy dross to consume and thy gold to refine, Thy dross to consume and thy gold to refine. 5 "The soul that on Jesus has leaned for repose, I will not, I will not desert to his foes; That soul, though all hell should endeavor to shake, I'll never, no never, no never forsake! O Lord, Make Haste to Hear My Cry

Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 13 hymnals Topics: Chastisements Lyrics: 1 O Lord, make haste to hear my cry, To Thee I call, on Thee rely; Incline to me a gracious ear, And, when I call, in mercy hear. 2 When in the morning unto Thee I lift my voice and bring my plea, Then let my prayer as incense rise To God enthroned above the skies. 3 When unto Thee I look and pray With lifted hands at close of day, Then as the evening sacrifice Let my request accepted rise. 4 Guard Thou my thoughts, I Thee implore, And of my lips O keep Thou the door; Nor leave my sinful heart to stray Where evil footsteps lead the way. 5 O righteous God, Thy chastisement, Though sent through foes, in love is sent; Though grievous, it will profit me, A healing ointment it shall be. 6 While wickedness my foes devise, To Thee my constant prayer shall rise; When their injustice is o'erthrown Mu gentleness shall still be shown. 7 Brought nigh to death and sore distressed, O Lord, my God, in Thee I rest; Forsake me not, I look to Thee, Let me Thy great salvation see. 8 Themselves entangled in their snare, Their own defeat my foes prepare; O keep me, Lord, nor let me fall, Protect and lead me safe through all. My People, Give Ear, Attend to My Word

Meter: 10.10.11.11 Appears in 11 hymnals Topics: Chastisements Lyrics: 1 My people, give ear, attend to my word, In parables new deep truths shall be heard; The wonderful story our fathers made known To children succeeding by us must be shown. 2 Instructing our sons we gladly record The praises, the works, the might of the Lord, For He has commanded that what He has done Be passed in tradition from father to son. 3 Let children thus learn from history’s light To hope in our God and walk in His sight, The God of their fathers to fear and obey, And ne’er like their fathers to turn from His way. 4 The story be told, to warn and restrain, Of hearts that were hard, rebellious, and vain, Of soldiers who faltered when battle was near, Who kept not God’s covenant nor walked in His fear. 5 God’s wonderful works to them He had shown, His marvelous deeds their fathers had known; He made for their pathway the waters divide, His glorious pillar of cloud was their guide. 6 He gave them to drink, relieving their thirst, And forth from the rock caused water to burst; Yet faithless they tempted their God, and they said, Can He who gave water supply us with bread? 7 Jehovah was wroth because they forgot To hope in their God, and trusted Him not; Yet gracious, He opened the doors of the sky And rained down the manna in richest supply. 8 With bread from on high their need He supplied, And more did He do when thankless they sighed; The strong winds commanding from south and from east, He sent them abundance of quail for their feast. 9 Though well they were filled, their folly they chose, Till God in His wrath o’erwhelmed them with woes; He slew of their strongest and smote their young men, But still unbelieving they sinned even then. 10 Because of their sin He smote with His rod, And then they returned and sought for their God; Their Rock and Redeemer was God the Most High, Yet false were their praises, their promise a lie. 11 Not right with their God in heart and in will, They faithlessly broke His covenant still; But He, in compassion, reluctant to slay, Forgave them and oft turned His anger away. 12 His pity was great, though often they sinned, For they were but flesh, a swift passing wind; Yet though His compassion and grace they beheld, They tempted and grieved Him and often rebelled. 13 They limited God, the Most Holy One, And hindered the work His grace had begun; The hand that was mighty to save they forgot, The day of redemption remembering not. 14 Ungrateful and blind, no longer they thought Of wonders and signs and mighty deeds wrought, Of how all the rivers of Egypt ran red, And plagues in God’s anger were heaped on their head. 15 They thought not of how, their freedom to gain, In Egypt’s abodes the first-born were slain, And how all God’s people were led forth like sheep, The flock He delighted in safety to keep. Great King of Nations, Hear Our Prayer

Author: John H. Gurney Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 74 hymnals Topics: Chastisement Lyrics: 1 Great King of nations, hear our prayer, while at your feet we fall, and humbly, with united cry, to you for mercy call. 2 The guilt is ours, but grace is yours, O turn us not away; but hear us from your lofty throne, and help us when we pray. 3 Our fathers' sins were manifold, and ours no less we own, yet wondrously from age to age your goodness has been shown. 4 When dangers, like a stormy sea, beset our country round, to you we looked, to you we cried, and help in you was found. 5 With one consent we meekly bow beneath your chast'ning hand, and, pouring forth confession meet, mourn with our mourning land. 6 With pitying eye behold our need, as thus we lift our pray'r; correct us with your judgments, Lord, then let your mercy spare. Scripture: Ezra 9:6-15 Used With Tune: ST. ANNE

Appears in 36 hymnals Topics: Saints chastised and Sinner destroyed First Line: Who will arise and plead my Right Lyrics: 1 Who will arise and plead my Right Against my num'rous Foes, While Earth and Hell their Force unite, And all my Hopes oppose? 2 Had not the Lord, my Rock, my Help, Sustain'd my fainting Head, My Life had now in Silence dwelt, My Soul amongst the Dead. 3 Alas! my sliding Feet! I cry'd. Thy Promise was my Prop; Thy Grace stood constant by my Side, Thy Spirit bore me up. 4 While Multitudes of mournful Thoughts Within my Bosom roll, Thy boundless Love forgives my Faults, Thy Comforts chear my Soul. 5 Pow'rs of Iniquity may rise, And frame pernicious Laws; But GOD my Refuge, rules the Skies, He will defend my Cause. 6 Let Malice vent her Rage aloud, Let bold Blasphemers scoff; The Lord our GOD shall judge the Proud, And cut the Sinners off. Psalm 78 Part 3

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 25 hymnals Topics: Sin and chastisement of saints First Line: When Isr'el sins, the Lord reproves Lyrics: When Isr'el sins, the Lord reproves And fills their hearts with dread; Yet he forgives the men he loves, And sends them heav'nly bread. He fed them with a lib'ral hand, And made his treasures known; He gave the midnight clouds command To pour provision down. The manna, like a morning shower, Lay thick around their feet The corn of heav'n, so light, so pure, As though 'twere angels' meat. But they in murm'ring language said, "Manna is all our feast; We loathe this light, this airy bread; We must have flesh to taste." "Ye shall have flesh to please your lust," The Lord in wrath replied, And sent them quails like sand or dust, Heaped up from side to side. He gave them all their own desire, And greedy as they fed, His vengeance burnt with secret fire, And smote the rebels dead. When some were slain, the rest returned And sought the Lord with tears; Under the rod they feared and mourned, But soon forgot their fears. Oft he chastised and still forgave, Till, by his gracious hand, The nation he resolved to save Possessed the promised land. Scripture: Psalm 78

Israel's Rebellion and Punsihment; or, The Sins and Chastisements of GOD's People

Appears in 27 hymnals Topics: Sin and chastisement of saints First Line: O what a stiff rebellious House Lyrics: 1 O what a stiff rebellious House Was Jacob's ancient Race! False to their own most solemn Vows, And to their Maker's Grace. 2 They broke the Cov'nant of his Love, And did his Laws despise; Forgot the Works he wrought, to prove His Pow'r before their Eyes. 3 They saw the Plagues on Egypt light From his revenging Hand; What dreadful Tokens of his Might Spread o'er the stubborn Land. 4 They saw him cleave the mighty Sea, And march'd in Safety through, With watry walls to guard their Way, 'Till they had 'scaped the foe. 5 A wond'rous Pillar mark'd the Road, Compos'd of Shade and Light; By day it prov'd a shelt'ring cloud, A leading Fire by Night. 6 He from the rock their Thirst supply'd The gushing Waters fell, And ran in Rivers by their Side, A constant Miracle. 7 Yet they provok'd the Lord most High, And dar'd distrust his Hand: "Can he with Bread our Host supply "Amidst this desart Land?" 8 The Lord with Indignation heard, And caus'd his Wrath to flame; His Terrors ever stand prepar'd To vindicate his Name.

Psalm 78 Part 4

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 32 hymnals Topics: Sin and chastisement of saints First Line: Great God, how oft did Isr'el prove Lyrics: Great God, how oft did Isr'el prove By turns thine anger and thy love! There in a glass our hearts may see How fickle and how false they be. How soon the faithless Jews forgot The dreadful wonders God had wrought! Then they provoke him to his face, Nor fear his power, nor trust his grace. The Lord consumed their years ill pain, And made their travels long and vain; A tedious march through unknown ways Wore out their strength, and spent their days. Oft when they saw their brethren slain They mourned, and sought the Lord again; Called him the Rock of their abode, Their high Redeemer, and their God. Their prayers and vows before him rise As flatt'ring words or solemn lies, While their rebellious tempers prove False to his cov'nant and his love. Yet did his sovereign grace forgive The men who not deserved to live; His anger oft away he turned, Or else with gentle flame it burned. He saw their flesh was weak and frail, He saw temptations still prevail; The God of Abram loved them still, And led them to his holy hill. Scripture: Psalm 78:32-72

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 87 hymnals Topics: Sin and chastisement of saints First Line: To God, the great, the ever-blest Lyrics: To God, the great, the ever-blest, Let songs of honor be addressed; His mercy firm for ever stands Give him the thanks his love demands. Who knows the wonders of thy ways? Who shall fulfil thy boundless praise? Blest are the souls that fear thee still, And pay their duty to thy will. Remember what thy mercy did For Jacob's race, thy chosen seed; And with the same salvation bless The meanest suppliant of thy grace. O may I see thy tribes rejoice, And aid their triumphs with my voice! This is my glory, Lord, to be Joined to thy saints, and near to thee. Scripture: Psalm 106:1-5
