Jesus, where'er thy people meet

Author: William Cowper, 1731-1800 Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 515 hymnals Scripture: Isaiah 59:1 Lyrics: 1 Jesus, where'er thy people meet, there they behold thy mercy-seat; where'er they seek thee thou art found, and every place is hallowed ground. 2 For thou, within no walls confined, inhabitest the humble mind; such ever bring thee when they come, and, going, take thee to their home. 3 Dear Shepherd of thy chosen few, thy former mercies here renew; here to our waiting hearts proclaim the sweetness of thy saving name. 4 Here may we prove the power of prayer to strengthen faith and sweeten care, to teach our faint desires to rise, and bring all heaven before our eyes. 5 Lord, we are few, but thou art near; nor short thine arm, nor deaf thine ear: O rend the heavens, come quickly down, and make a thousand hearts thine own! Do not for my sins forsake me; Let Your wrath not overtake me. 3 For Your Son has suffered for me, Giv'n Himself to rescue me, Died to save me and restore me, Reconciled and set me free. Join all the glorious names

Author: Isaac Watts, 1674-1748 Meter: 6.6.6.6.8.8 Appears in 336 hymnals Scripture: Isaiah 59:20 Lyrics: 1 Join all the glorious names of wisdom, love, and power, that ever mortals knew, that angels ever bore: all are too mean to speak his worth, too mean to set my Saviour forth. 2 But O what gentle terms, what condescending ways doth our Redeemer use to teach his heavenly grace! Mine eyes with joy and wonder see what forms of love he bears for me. 3 Arrayed in mortal flesh, he like an Angel stands, and holds his promises and pardons in his hands; commissioned from his Father's throne to make his grace to mortals known. 4 Great Prophet of my God, my tongue would bless thy name; by thee the joyful news of our salvation came: the joyful news of sins forgiven, of hell subdued and peace with heaven. 5 Be thou my Counsellor, my Pattern, and my Guide; and through this desert land still keep me near thy side: O let my feet ne'er run astray, nor rove, nor seek the crooked way. 6 I love my Shepherd's voice, his watchful eyes shall keep my wandering soul among the thousands of his sheep: he feeds his flock, he calls their names his bosom bears the tender lambs. 7 To this dear Surety's hand will I commit my cause; he answers and fulfils his Father's broken laws: behold my soul at freedom set! my Surety paid the dreadful debt. 8 Jesus my great High-Priest offered his blood and died; my guilty conscience seeks no sacrifice beside: his powerful blood did once atone and now it pleads before the throne. 9 My Advocate appears for my defence on high; the Father bows his ear and lays his thunder by: not all that hell or sin can say shall turn his heart, his love away. 10 My dear almighty Lord, my Conqueror and my King, thy sceptre and thy sword, thy reigning grace I sing. Thine is the power, behold I sit in willing bonds before thy feet. 11 Now let my soul arise, and tread the tempter down; my Captain leads me forth to conquest and a crown. A feeble saint shall win the day, though death and hell obstruct the way. 12 Should all the hosts of death, and powers of hell unknown, put their most dreadful forms of rage and mischief on, I shall be safe, for Christ displays superior power, and guardian-grace. There's a Voice in the Wilderness

Author: James Lewis Milligan (1876-1961) Meter: Irregular Appears in 24 hymnals Scripture: Isaiah 59:15-21 First Line: There's a voice in the wilderness crying Lyrics: 1 There’s a voice in the wilderness crying, a call from the ways untrod: prepare in the desert a highway, a highway for our God! The valleys shall be exalted, the lofty hills brought low; make straight all the crooked places, where the Lord our God may go! 2 O Zion, give voice to good tidings, ascend to the heights and sing! Proclaim to a desolate people the coming of their King. The works of pride all perish, like flowers they shall decay; the power and pomp of nations shall pass like a dream away. 3 But your word, O God, is faithful, your arm, O Lord, is strong; you stand in the midst of nations, and you will right the wrong. You will feed your flock like a shepherd, and fold the lambs to your breast; in pastures of peace you’ll lead them, and give to the weary rest. 4 There’s a voice in the wilderness crying, a call from the ways untrod: prepare in the desert a highway, a highway for our God! Author: Joy F. Patterson Meter: 11.8.11.8 D Appears in 14 hymnals Scripture: Isaiah 59:7-15 Lyrics: 1 Isaiah the prophet has written of old how God’s new creation shall come. Instead of the thorn tree, the fir tree shall grow; the wolf shall lie down with the lamb. The mountains and hills shall burst forth into song, the peoples be led forth in peace, for the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of God as the waters cover the sea. 2 Yet nations still prey on the meek of the world, and conflict turns parent from child. Your people despoil all the sweetness of earth; the briar and the thorn tree grow wild. God, bring to fruition your will for the earth, that no one shall hurt or destroy, that wisdom and justice shall reign in the land and your people shall go forth in joy. We Walk Today in Darkness

Author: Mary Nelson Keithahn Meter: 7.6.7.6 D Appears in 2 hymnals Scripture: Isaiah 59:9 First Line: We walk today in darkness, Lyrics: We walk today in darkness, each waiting for the light of Love that works for justice and seeks to make things right. We wait, sometimes forgetting we do not wait alone, that others long for justice and blessings yet unknown. We walk today in darkness, our purpose unfulfilled. We do not do for others the good that God has willed. We do not offer kindness to those who wait in need, nor justice to our neighbors in every word and deed. We walk today in darkness, our vain hearts filled with shame. We follow our own footsteps and not the Spirit's flame. Self-love bedims our vision, self-interest clouds our sight, and good intentions vanish like shadows in the night. Lord Jesus, light our darkness; with joy dispel our gloom. Prepare us to receive you, and in our lives make room for humble, loving-kindness, for just and honest ways, that we might walk together in Love-illumined days.
