Psalm 14 Part 1

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 62 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 14 First Line: Fools in their heart believe and say Lyrics: Fools in their heart believe and say "That all religion's vain; There is no God that reigns on high, Or minds th' affairs of men." From thoughts so dreadful and profane, Corrupt discourse proceeds; And in their impious hands are found Abominable deeds. The Lord from his celestial throne Looked down on things below, To find the man that sought his grace, Or did his justice know. By nature all are gone astray, Their practice all the same; There's none that fears his Maker's hand; There's none that loves his name. Their tongues are used to speak deceit, Their slanders never cease; How swift to mischief are their feet, Nor know the paths of peace! Such seeds of sin (that bitter root) In every heart are found; Nor can they bear diviner fruit, Till grace refine the ground. Topics: Atheism practical; Persecutors their folly; Practical atheism; Sin of nature; Sin universal; Wickedness of man

Sure, wicked fools must needs suppose

Appears in 7 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 14 Lyrics: 1 Sure, wicked Fools must needs suppose, That God is nothing but a Name: Corrupt and lewd their Practice grows, No Breast is warm'd with holy Flame. 2 The Lord look'd down from Heav'n's high Tow'r And all the sons of Men did view, To see if any own'd his Pow'r'; If any Truth or Justice knew. 3 But all, he saw, were gone aside, All were degen'rate grown, and base: None took Religion for their Guide, Not one of all the sinful Race. But can these workers of Deceit Be all so dull and senseless grown, That they, like Bread, my People eat, And God's Almighty Pow'r disown? 5 How will they tremble then for Fear, When his just Wrath shall them o'ertake! For, to the righteous, God is near, And never will their Cause forsake. 6 Ill Men, in vain, with Scorn expose the Methods which the Good pursue; Since God a Refuge is for those Whom his just eyes with Favour view. 7 Would he his saving Pow'r employ, To break his People's servile Band; Then Shouts of universal Joy Shall loudly eccho through the Land.

Psalm 14: That there is not a God, the fool

Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 7 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 14 First Line: That there is not a God, the fool Lyrics: 1That there is not a God, the fool doth in his heart conclude: They are corrupt, their works are vile; not one of them doth good. 2Upon men’s sons the Lord from heav’n did cast his eyes abroad, To see if any understood, and did seek after God. 3They altogether filthy are, they all aside are gone; And there is none that doeth good, yea, sure there is not one. 4These workers of iniquity do they not know at all, That they my people eat as bread, and on God do not call? 5There fear’d they much; for God is with the whole race of the just. 6You shame the counsel of the poor, because God is his trust. 7Let Isr’el’s help from Sion come: when back the Lord shall bring His captives, Jacob shall rejoice, and Israel shall sing.

A Psalm of David

Appears in 3 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 14 First Line: Fools, in their hearts, say there's no GOD Lyrics: 1 Fools in their hearts say, there's no GOD, and so corrupt they grow, Abominable sins commit, and nothing good they do. 2 From heav'n JEHOVAH looked down on sons of men, to see If any who do understand, or seek to GOD there be. 3 They altogether filthy are; they all are backward* gone; There are not any that do good, no verily, not one. 4 The workers of iniquity, do they not know at all? That they my people eat as bread, nor on the LORD will call. 5 Yet they shall with a grievous fear appalled greatly be, When GOD among the righteous race they once shall come to see. 6 The counsel of the poor oppress'd, ye mock'd and try'd to shame; Because the LORD their refuge is, and they hope in his name. 7 Who will from Zion Isr'el save? when back the LORD shall bring His captives; Jacob will rejoyce, and Isr'el gladly sing.

Dixit insipiens

Author: T. S. Appears in 2 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 14 First Line: There is no God as foolish men Lyrics: 1 There is no God as foolish men affirme in their mad mood: Their drifts are all corrupt and vaine, not one of them doth good. 2 The Lord beheld from heaven high the whole race of mankind, And saw not one that sought indeed the living God to find. 3 They went all wide and were corrupt, and truly there was none That in the world did any good, I say, there was not one. 4 Is all their judgement so farre lost, that all work mischief still? Eating my people even as bread, not one to seek God's will? 5 When they thus rage, then suddenly great feare on them shall fall: For God doth love the righteous men, and will maintaine them all. 6 Ye mock the doings of the poore, to their reproach and shame: Because they put their trust in God, and call upon his name. 7 But who shall give thy people health, and when wilt thou fulfill Thy promise made to Israel, from out of Sion hill? 8 Even when thou shalt restore againe such as were captive led: Then Jacob shall therein rejoyce, and Israel shall be glad.

All in All

Author: John Murray Meter: Irregular Appears in 4 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 14:2-3 First Line: Come, tho' we can truly sing Lyrics: 1 Cone, tho' we can truly sing, In our flesh dwells no good thing; Yet on him who gives us all, We're embolden'd still to call. 2 Blind, and foolish once were we, Christ our wisdom now we see; In this wisdom we confide, By this we are justifi'd; 3 Once in breaking God's command, Doom'd to death beneath his hand; Now we're call'd to own, and bless, Jesus Christ our righteousness. 4 Without purity of heart Truth divine will say depart, But this holiness we find, In the Saviour of mankind. 5 Many, mighty are our foes! Human these, angelic those, Where for refuge shall we flee? Christ our great redemption see! 6 Seraphs, flames of sacred fire, View this myst'ry with desire; Hark! the bright enraptur'd throng Catch, and raise the grateful song. 7 O ye thrones of heav'nly light, Since you're sav'd from endless night, And since we are rais'd to you, Let us still the song pursue. A Worldling, wretched, vile and base

Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 3 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 14 Lyrics: 1 A Worldling, wretched, vile and base, Not subject to restraining grace; But yielded to his lusts and pride, And set all fear of God aside. 2 Though he had riches laid in store, Yet no compassion on the poor! A beggar in a helpless state, Found no assistance at his gate. 3 The worldling spent his precious days, In Luxuries, in sports and plays-- While the poor beggar lay distress'd, With poverty and sores oppress'd. 4 But to them both it proved strange, To meet with such a sudden change; The worldling sent to endless pain, The beggar plac'd with Christ to reign. 5 This is the sinners awful case: They who neglect the time of grace; They cry for help, but O too late! When once they share their lot and fate. 6 The worldlilng pray'd to get relief, To metigate his pain and grief; But father Abr'am could not grant that cooling drop which he did want. 7 If we seek heaven here on earth, We loose the heav'n of greater worth; To bear the Cross with Jesus here, Intitles us to glory there. 8 Dear Saviour, make us truly wise, All sinful pleasures to despise-- The greatest evil we can do: That is to choose our heav'n below. Author: John Relly Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 3 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 14:6 First Line: How strange the tidings, how profound! Lyrics: 1 How strange the tidings, how profound! That God a man should be; In servant's form the Lord was found, To make us S\servants free. 2 Our father lov'd us worms so well, He put our nature on, And thus became Immanuel, The Father and the Son. 3 He finish'd what his love began, For Adam's ruin'd race; We see the God shine thro' the man, In dear Imman'el's face. 4 This sacred unity maintains Our constant peace with God: Our sins aton'd for by his pains, His sorrow and his blood. Vain foolish Men profanely boast

Appears in 2 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 14 Lyrics: 1 Vain foolish Men profanely boast Of God and true Religion: Their faithless Hearts are full of Lust, Their Life's a Contradiction: Corrupted is their very Frame; God's Holiness abhors the same; There's None doth Good, but Evil. II. The Lord, from his coelestial Throne, Look'd down on evr'y Creature, To find one Man who had begun To love God's holy Nature; But ll the Race was gone astray, All had forsook the saving Way Of CHRIST'S bright Revelation. III. How long will they be ignorant Of their Abomination, Who thus despise my Covenant, Nor spare my Holy Nation? They never call upon the Lord, But trust unto their golden Hoard, And turn their own Defenders. IV. Yet are their Hearts in constant Pain, And secret Fear and Trembling. God with his SION will remain, Where Saints are still assembling: But you deride the Poors' Advice, Their greatest Comfort you despise, That God's their only Refuge. V. O, that the joyful Day wou'd come, To change our mournful Station, When God will bring his Children home, And finish our Salvation! Then shall the Tribes of JACOB sing, And JUDAH praise their Lord and King, With lasting HALLELUJAHS. Topics: True and False Christianity

The impious atheist, in his folly proud

Appears in 2 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 14 Lyrics: 1 The impious atheist, in his folly proud, At one all-powerful being laughs aloud. Corrupt they're all; from virtue's path they turn, And in the quenchless fires of lust they burn; Their shocking crimes, their curst impieties, Demand tremendous vengeance from the skies. 2 Th' All-high looks down from his etherial throne, To see, if man his sov'reign pow'r will own; If yet the sons of earth accept his sway, His name revere, and his dread will obey. 3 Ah no! not one--they 'gainst their God conspire, Pursue the dictates of each wild desire, In filthy scenes their precious hours employ, And make their shocking crimes their horrid joy. 4 Does then rank frenzy o'er the wicked reign, That they such hideous blasphemy maintain, That they my people, as their prey, devour, And, obstinate, reject almighty pow'r? 5 But still their wretched hearts shall make with fear, For, where the righteous are, God's always near, The refuge of the just he'll constant prove; The humble soul is sure to have his love; 6 And, while, ye wicked, you her hopes deride, Falls direful vengeance on your impious pride. 7 From Sion's hill, O that the Lord wou'd send His speedy aid, and Jacob's sons defend; Wou'd his own people from their bondage free, And give them back their long'd-for liberty; Then shou'd the race of Israel shout for joy, And their glad tongues in grateful hymns employ.

Sure wicked Fools, devoid of Shame

Appears in 1 hymnal Scripture: Psalm 14 Lyrics: 1 Sure, wicked Fools, devoid of Shame, Suppose that GOD is but a Name: Corrupt and lewd their Practice grows, No Breast with heav'nly Ardor glows; All Thoughts of Virtue they resign, Their Hearts to evil Ways incline. 2 The LORD, from Realms of endless Day, Did all the Sons of Men survey; Look'd down from his exalted Tow'r, To see if any own'd his Pow'r; To see if any Justice knew, Or did the Paths of Truth pursue. 3 But all he saw were gone aside, None took Religion for their Guide, Not one of all the sinful Race, But was degen'rate grown and base, And still in ev'ry wicked Way, With wand'ring Footsteps went astray. 4 Their Throats are open to devour The helpless Poor, when in their Pow'r; Their Mouths with Curses fill'd and Lies, No Fear of GOD's before their Eyes; Their Ways to swift Destruction tend, And must in certain Ruin end. 5 But will these Workers of Deceit, Like Bread, my harmless People eat? And God's Almighty Pow'r disown? 5 How will they tremble then for Fear, When his just Wrath shall them o'ertake! Are they so dull and senseless grown, That they will GOD's great Pow'r disown? Will they not his Commands obey, And yield to his Almighty Sway? 6 How will they tremble then for Fear, When they behold his Vengeance near! When his just Wrath shall them o'ertake; For GOD will ne'er the Just forsake: For them he will his Arm extend, And from the Foe their Lives defend. 7 Bad Men, in vain, with Scorn deride The Just, who follow Virtue's Guide, And strive their Methods to expose; Since GOD a Refuge is for those: His Eyes shall them with Favour view, Whilst they their righteous Paths pursue. 7 Would he his saving Pow'r extend, And now his People's Cause defend; Oh! would he break their servile Band; What Shouts should echo thro' the Land! How should we then our Songs employ, And join the universal Joy! The Fool in's Heart saith, there's no God

Appears in 1 hymnal Scripture: Psalm 14 Lyrics: 1. The Fool, in's Heart, saith, there's no God; They so corrupt are grown: Abominable Works they do. That doth Good there is none. 2. The Lord on Sons of Men, look'd down. From Heav'n, his high Abode; To see if Reason bore the Sway, And led them up to God. 3. But lo! they all were gone aside, They filthy were, and base; Not one, the Paths of Virtue trod, Of all that sinful Race. 4. Do wicked Fools so blind their Eyes, And far from Reason stray. That they my People eat as Bread, And God no Homage pay? 5. Then conscious Guilt shall them surprise, With most amazing Fear; When God, to plead the just Man's Cause, In Vengeance shall appear. 6. The pious Counsel of the Poor, Reproaching ye despise; Because the Lord his Refuge is, Where he for Shelter flies. 7. Would God, from Zion Safety send, And back his Captives bring; Jacob should, with loud Peals, rejoice. Thy Praise glad Isr'el sing.
