Come, You Faithful, Raise the Strain

Author: John of Damascus; John Mason Neale Meter: 7.6.7.6 D Appears in 388 hymnals Topics: Epiphany 6 Year C Lyrics: 1 Come, you faithful, raise the strain of triumphant gladness: God has brought forth Israel into joy from sadness, loosed from Pharaoh's bitter yoke Jacob's sons and daughters, led them with unmoistened foot through the Red Sea waters. 2 'Tis the spring of souls today, Christ has burst his prison, and from three days' sleep in death as a sun has risen; all the winter of our sins, long and dark, is flying from his light, to whom we give laud and praise undying. 3 Now the queen of seasons, bright with the day of splendour, with the royal feast of feasts, comes its joy to render; comes to gladden faithful hearts, who with true affection welcome in unwearied strains Jesus' resurrection! 4 Neither could the gates of death, nor the tomb's dark portal, nor the watchers, nor the seal hold him as a mortal: for today amid his own he now stands, bestowing God's true peace which evermore passes human knowing. Used With Tune: AVE VIRGO VIRGINUM

Wake, O wake, and sleep no longer

Author: Christopher Idle (born 1938); P. Nicolai (1556-1608) Appears in 9 hymnals Topics: Epiphany 6, Revelation Parables Lyrics: 1 Wake, O wake, and sleep no longer, for he who calls you is no stranger: awake, God's own Jerusalem! Hear, the midnight bells are chiming the signal for his royal coming: let voice to voice announce his name! We feel his footsteps near, the Bridegroom at the door — Alleluia! The lamps will shine with light divine as Christ the saviour comes to reign. 2 Zion hears the sound of singing; her heart is thrilled with sudden longing; she stirs, and wakes, and stands prepared. Christ her friend, and lord, and lover, her star and sun and strong redeemer — at last his mighty voice is heard. The Son of God has come To make with us his home: sing Hosanna! The fight is won, the feast begun; we fix our eyes on Christ alone. 3 Glory, glory, sing the angels, while music sounds from strings and cymbals; all humankind, with songs arise! Twelve the gates into the city, each one a pearl of shining beauty; the streets of gold ring out with praise. All creatures round the throne adore the holy One with rejoicing: Amen be sung by every tongue to crown their welcome to the King. Used With Tune: SLEEPERS, WAKE

Briggs (1875-1959) Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Appears in 53 hymnals Topics: Epiphany 6, Revelation Parables Lyrics: 1 God has spoken — by the prophets, spoken his unchanging word; each from age to age proclaiming God the one, the righteous Lord; in the world's despair and turmoil one firm anchor still holds fast: God is king, his throne eternal, God the first and God the last. 2 God has spoken — by Christ Jesus, Christ, the everlasting Son; brightness of the Father's glory, with the Father ever one: spoken by the Word incarnate, Life, before all time began, light of light, to earth descending, God, revealed as Son of Man. 3 God is speaking — by the Spirit, speaking to our hearts again; in the age-long word expounding God's own message, now as then. New praises sound from day to day and echo through the knowing dark. Without a word their songs roll on; into all lands their voices run. And with a champion’s strength and grace from farthest heaven comes forth the sun. 2 God’s perfect law revives the soul; its precepts make the simple wise. Its just commands rejoice the heart; its truth gives light unto the eyes. Forever shall this law endure: unblemished, righteous, true, complete. No gold we ever found so fine, no honey in the comb more sweet. 3 God’s servant may I ever be: this world my joy, that word my guide. O cleanse me, LORD, from secret sin; deliver me from selfish pride. Accept my thoughts and words and deeds; let them find favor in your sight. For you alone can make me whole, O LORD, my refuge and my might. Scripture: Psalm 19 Used With Tune: CREATION

[Refrain] 3 I want to live above the world, Though Satan’s darts at me are hurled; For faith has caught a joyful sound, the song of saints on higher ground. [Refrain] 4 I want to scale the utmost height, and catch a gleam of glory bright; But still I’ll pray till heaven I’ve found, “God, lead me on the higher ground.” [Refrain] Used With Tune: HIGHER GROUND

I once was lost, but now am found, was blind, but now I see. 2 'Twas grace that taught my heart to fear and grace my fears relieved; how precious did that grace appear the hour I first believed! 3 Through many dangers, toils, and snares, I have already come; 'tis grace that brought me safe thus far, and grace will lead me home. 4 The Lord has promised good to me, this word my hope secures; God will my shield and portion be as long as life endures. 5 When we've been there ten thousand years bright shining as the sun, we've no less days to sing God's praise than when we'd first begun.
