Meter: Irregular Appears in 434 hymnals Topics: Life in Christ Christ Incarnate - Christmas and Epiphany; Christian Year Season of Epiphany First Line: The first Nowell the angel did say Lyrics: 1 The first Nowell the angel did say was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay; in fields where they lay a-keeping their sheep on a cold winter's night that was so deep: [Refrain:] Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, born is the King of Israel. 2 They lookèd up and saw a star, shining in the east beyond them far, and to the earth it gave great light, and so it continued both day and night. [Refrain] 3 And by the light of that same star three wise men came from country far; to seek for a king was their intent, and to follow the star wherever it went. [Refrain] 4 This star drew nigh to the northwest, o'er Bethlehem it took its rest, and there it did both stop and stay right over the place where Jesus lay. [Refrain] 5 Then entered in those wise men three full reverently upon their knee, and offered there in his presence, their gold, and myrrh, and frankincense. [Refrain] 6 Then let us all with one accord sing praises to our heavenly Lord; that hath made heaven and earth of naught, and with his blood mankind hath bought. [Refrain] Scripture: Hebrews 9:12 Used With Tune: THE FIRST NOWELL Text Sources: English traditional carol

Comfort those who sit in darkness, burdened by a heavy load. To Jerusalem proclaim: God shall take away your shame. Now get ready to recover; guilt and suffering are over. 2 Hear the herald's proclamation in the desert far and near, calling all to true repentance, telling that the Lord is near. Oh, that warning cry obey! For your God prepare a way. Let the valleys rise to greet him and the hills bow down to meet him. 3 Straighten out what has been crooked, make the roughest places plain. Let your hearts be true and humble, live as fits God's holy reign. Soon the glory of the Lord shall on earth be shed abroad. Human flesh shall surely see it, God is ready to decree it. I Cannot Tell

Author: William Y. Fullerton Meter: 11.10.11.10 D Appears in 37 hymnals Topics: Jesus Christ Physician; Evangelism; Jesus Christ Birth; Jesus Christ Earthly Life and Ministry; Jesus Christ Incarnation; Jesus Christ King; Jesus Christ Physician; Jesus Christ Return (Coming in Glory); Jesus Christ Savior; Jesus Christ Suffering; Jesus Christ Final Victory; Praise of Jesus Christ First Line: I cannot tell why he whom angels worship Lyrics: 1 I cannot tell why he whom angels worship should come in flesh as prophets long foretold, or why the Shepherd longs to save the wanderers and bring them back rejoicing to the fold. But this I know, that he was born of Mary when Bethlehem's manger was his only home, and that he lived at Nazareth and labored, and so the promised Savior of the world is come. 2 I cannot tell how silently he suffered as with his peace he graced this place of tears, or how his heart upon the cross was broken, the crown of pain to three and thirty years. But this I know, he heals the broken-hearted, and stays our sin, and calms our lurking fear, and lifts the burden from the heavy laden, for still the suffering Savior of the world is here. 3 I cannot tell how he will win the nations, how he will claim his earthly heritage, how satisfy the needs and aspirations of east and west, of sinner and of sage. But this I know, all flesh shall see his glory, and he shall reap the harvest he has sown, and some glad day his sun shall shine in splendor, when he, the risen Savior of the world, is known. 4 I cannot tell how all the lands shall worship when at his bidding, every storm is stilled, or who can say how great the jubilation when all our hearts with love for him are filled. But this I know, the skies will thrill with rapture, and countless voices then will join to sing, and earth to heaven, and heaven to earth will answer: "At last the living Savior of the world is King!" Scripture: Isaiah 40:5 Used With Tune: LONDONDERRY AIR

Break Forth, O Beauteous Heavenly

Author: Johann von Rist; John Troutbeck; Fred Pratt Green Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.8.7.7 Appears in 64 hymnals Topics: Incarnation; Jesus Christ Epiphany of First Line: Break forth, O beauteous heav’nly light Lyrics: 1 Break forth, O beauteous heav’nly light, and usher in the morning. O shepherds, shrink not with affright, but hear the angel’s warning. This child, now weak in infancy, our confidence and joy shall be, the power of Satan breaking, our peace eternal making. 2 This night of wonder, night of joy, was born the Christ, our brother. He comes, not mighty to destroy, to bid us love each other. How could he quit his high estate for such a world of greed and hate? What deep humiliation secured the world’s salvation! 3 Come, dearest child, into our hearts, and leave your crib behind you! Let this be where the new life starts for all who seek and find you. To you be honor, thanks, and praise, for all your gifts this time of grace. Come conquer and deliver this world, and us, forever. Scripture: Isaiah 9:2 Used With Tune: ERMUNTRE DICH Text Sources: “Ermuntre dich, mein schwacher Geist,” Himmlische Lieder, 1641

Our Souls shall magnify the Lord

Appears in 16 hymnals Topics: Incarnation of Christ Lyrics: 1 Our Souls shall magnify the Lord, In God the Saviour we rejoice: While we repeat the Virgin's Song, May the same Spirit tune our Voice! [2 The Highest saw her low Estate, And mighty Things his Hand hath done; His over-shadowing Power and Grace Makes her the Mother of his Son. 3 Let ev'ry Nation call her bless'd, And endless Uears prolong her Fame; But God alone must be ador'd; Holy and reverend is his Name.] 4 To those that fear and trust the Lord, His Mercy stands for ever sure: From Age to Age his Promise lives, And the Performance is secure. 5 He spake to Abr'am and his Seed, In thee shall all the Earth be blest; The Mem'ry of that ancient Word Lay long in his eternal Breast. 6 But now no more shall Isr'el wait, No more the Gentiles lie forlorn; Lo, the Desire of Nations comes; Behold, the promis'd Seed is born! Built on the Rock

Author: Carl Doving; Nikolai F. S. Grundtvig Meter: 8.8.8.8.8.8.8 Appears in 75 hymnals Topics: Christ Incarnation; Church, The; Dedication Services Of a Church First Line: Built on the Rock the Church doth stand Lyrics: 1 Built on the Rock the Church doth stand, Even when steeples are falling; Crumbled have spires in every land, Bells still are chiming and calling; Calling the young and old to rest, But above all the soul distressed, Longing for rest everlasting. 2 Surely in temples made with hands, God, the Most High, is not dwelling, High above earth His temple stands, All earthly temples excelling; Yet He whom heavens cannot contain Chose to abide on earth with men, Built in our bodies His temple. 3 We are God's house of living stones, Builded for His habitation; He through baptismal grace us owns, Heirs of His wondrous salvation; Were we but two His name to tell, Yet He would deign with us to dwell, With all His grace and His favor. 4 Now we may gather with our King; E'en in the lowliest dwelling; Praises to Him we there may bring, His wondrous mercy forth-telling; Jesus His grace to us accords, Spirit and life are all His words, His truth doth hollow the temple. 5 Still we our earthly temples rear, That we may herald His praises; They are the homes where He draws near And little children embraces, Beautiful things in them are said, God there with us His covenant made, Making us heirs of His Kingdom. Amen. Scripture: 1 Corinthians 6:19 Used With Tune: BUILT ON THE ROCK
