'Take up your cross,' the Saviour said

Author: C. W. Everest (1814-1877) Appears in 302 hymnals Topics: Pentecost 18 The Offering of Life Lyrics: 1 'Take up your cross,' the Saviour said, 'if you would my disciple be; deny yourself, forsake the world, and humbly follow after me.' 2 Take up your cross — let not its weight fill your weak soul with vain alarm; his strength shall bear your spirit up, and brace your heart, and nerve your arm. 3 Take up your cross, nor heed the shame, nor let your foolish pride rebel; the Lord for you the cross endured to save your soul from death and hell. 4 Take up your cross, then, in his strength, and calmly every danger brave; he guides us to a better home, and leads to conquest of the grave. 5 Take up your cross and follow Christ, nor think till death to lay it down; for only they who bear the cross may hope to win the glorious crown. Scripture: Mark 8:34 Used With Tune: BRESLAU

Lord, take my very self I pray your work, your will to do. Used With Tune: WALSALL

My God, accept my heart this day

Author: M. Bridges (1800-1894) Appears in 263 hymnals Topics: Pentecost 18 The Offering of Life Lyrics: 1 My God, accept my heart this day, and make it yours alone; no longer let my footsteps stray, from your belovèd Son. 2 Before the cross of him who died, in awe and shame I fall; let every sin be crucified, and Christ be all in all. 3 Anoint me with your heavenly grace and seal me as your own, that I may see your glorious face and worship at your throne. 4 Let every thought and work and word, to you be ever given; then life shall be your service, Lord, and death the gate of heaven. 5 All glory to the Father be, the Spirit and the Son; all love and praise eternally to God the Three-in-One. Used With Tune: ST. PETER

O God, our help in ages past

Author: I. Watts (1674-1748) Appears in 1,268 hymnals Topics: Pentecost 18 The Offering of Life Lyrics: 1 O God, our help in ages past, our hope for years to come, our shelter from the stormy blast, and our eternal home: 2 Beneath the shadow of your throne your people lived secure; sufficient is your arm alone, and our defence is sure. 3 Before the hills in order stood, or earth from darkness came, from everlasting you are God, to endless years the same. 4 A thousand ages in your sight are like an evening gone; short as the watch that ends the night before the rising sun. 5 Time, like an ever-rolling stream, will bear us all away; we pass forgotten, as a dream dies with the dawning day. 6 O God, our help in ages past, our hope for years to come be our defence while life shall last, and our eternal home! Scripture: Psalm 90 Used With Tune: ST. ANNE

How Blest Are They Whose Trespass

Meter: 7.6.7.6 D Appears in 31 hymnals Topics: Year C, Ordinary Time after Pentecost, June 12-18 (if after Trinity Sunday) Lyrics: 1 How blest are they whose trespass has freely been forgiven, whose sins are wholly covered before the sight of heaven. Blest they to whom the LORD God does not impute their sin, who have a guileless spirit, whose heart is true within. 2 While I kept guilty silence, my strength was spent with grief: your hand was heavy on me; my soul found no relief. But when I owned my trespass and did not hide my sin, then you forgave my guilt, LORD, restored my life within. 3 So let the godly seek you in times when you are near; no whelming floods shall reach them or cause their hearts to fear. O LORD, you are my refuge, you are my hiding place, and you surround me always with songs of saving grace. 4 "I graciously will teach you the way that you should go, and, with my eye upon you, help you my counsel know. Then do not be unruly or slow to understand; be not perverse, but willing to heed my wise command." 5 The sorrows of the wicked increase from year to year, but those who trust the LORD God know love instead of fear. Then in the LORD be joyful, in song lift up your voice; be glad in God, you righteous: rejoice, O saints, rejoice! Scripture: Psalm 32 Used With Tune: RUTHERFORD Text Sources: Psalter, 1912, alt.
