1854 - 1925 Person Name: Wm. H. Clark Hymnal Number: 79 Author of "Jesus Near" in The Highway and the Way, or Burning Bush Songs No. 3 Clark, William Henry. (Racine, Wisconsin, April 8, 1854--November 8, 1925, Rome, New York). Free Methodist. In his infancy, his parents returned to their former home in New York State, where his mother soon died, and his father married a close friend of hers, who forecast, after William's conversion in 1873, that one day he would be a bishop. He served the Susquehanna Conference of his denomination as a pastor and district superintendent from 1876 until 1919, when his stepmother's prediction came true. Meanwhile, he had been a member of the joint commission of the Free and Wesleyan Methodist Churches which compiled the Hymnal of 1910, and contributed some items to it. J. Howard Entwisle

Born in PA, he became a musician and songbook editor-compiler in Philadelphia, PA, in the 1890s. He collaberated with William J Kirkpatrick, also of Philadelphia, promoting gospel songs. He helped compile “Songs of love and praise #4”, then later “Songs of love and praise #5”. Other published works were: “Bright melodies” (1899), “Heavenly sunlight” (1900), “Exalted praise” (1901). Charles S. Robinson

1829 - 1899 Hymnal Number: 37 Author of "Savior! I Follow On" in The Highway and the Way, or Burning Bush Songs No. 3 Robinson, Charles Seymour, D.D., was born at Bennington, Vermont, March 31, 1829, and educated at William College, 1849, and in theology, at Union Seminary, New York (1852-53), and Princeton (1853-55). He became Presbyterian Pastor at Troy, 1855; at Brooklyn, 1860; of the American chapel in Paris (France), 1868; and of the Memorial Presbyterian Church, New York, 1870. During 1876-77 he was editor of the Illustrated Christian Weekly. As an editor of hymn-books he has been most successful. His Songs of the Church were published in 1862; Songs for the Sanctuary, 1865; Spiritual Songs, 1878; and Laudes Domini, A Selection of Spiritual Songs, Ancient and Modern, 1884. His Songs for the Sanctuary has probably had a wider sale than any other unofficial American collection of any denomination, and the Laudes Domini is a book of great excellence. Dr. Robinson has composed a few hymns, including, "Saviour, I follow on" (Following Christ), in his Song of the Church, 1862, and "Isles of the South, your redemption is nearing " (Missions), in his Songs for the Sanctuary, 1865. Born in Fryeburg, ME, the son of a minister, he attended Weslyan University, CT, Boston University, MA,1871, and Marietta College, OH, 1886. He married Sara Jane Timanus. He served as pastor of Methodist Episcopal, Congregational, and Presbyterian churches, and was prominent in the temperance and prohibition movements. He promoted Sunday school education. He founded, and for 28 years was Superintendent of the International Reform Bureau. He authored a number of books, other works, and some hymn lyrics. He wrote on a wide variety of subjects, mostly religious. He died in Washington, D.C. of pneumonia. John Perry
