T. Vincent Tymms

1842 - 1942 Meter: 8.8.8.6 Author of "Let Evening Twilight Turn To Dawn" Tymms, Thomas Vincent, was born in Westminster, Jan. 5, 1842. After being educated for the Baptist ministry in Regent's Park College, London, he became, in 1865, pastor at Berwick-upon-Tweed. Thence, in 1868, he removed to Accrington, and in 1869 to London, where he now ministers to an influential congregation in the Downs Chapel, Clapton. In 1885 Mr. Tymms published an able book entitled The Mystery of God; a consideration of some intellectual hindrances to Faith (2nd ed. 1886; a 3rd ed. 1887). Mr. Tymms has written several hymns, which have been printed in the 1880 Supplement to the Baptist Psalms and Hymns, and in the Baptist Psalms and Hymns for School and Home, 1882:— 1. Another Sabbath ended (1866). Sunday Evening. 2. In Shiloh, where Thine ark was stored (1881). Prayer to the God of Samuel. 3. 0 Lord of glory, be my light (1882). Invocation. 4. Lord, I read of tender mercy (1882). Tenderness of Jesus. Of these hymns, No. 4, originally in 7 stanzas of 4 lines, was altered and abridged to 5 stanzas in the Baptist Psalms and Hymns for School and Home. [Rev. W. R. He was President and Professor of Theology at Rawdon College, Leeds, 1891-1904, President of the Baptist Union 1896, and received D.D. from St. Andrews in 1897. He now (1906) resides at Bexhill-on-Sea. His fine hymn, "How oft an absent Lord we mourn" (Nearness to Christ), was written in 1892, and published in Good Words, 1892, p. 853, in 11 stanzas, entitled "Light from Emmaus." In the Sunday School Hymnary, 1905, No. 465, it is considerably altered, and begins "Let evening twilight turn to dawn"; st. i. being a combination of 6, 7, and ii. of 4, 5. [Rev. William Henry Gladstone

Died: July 4, 1892, Westminster, London, England. Eldest son of British prime minister William Gladstone, William attended Eton College and read Greek and Latin at Christ Church College, Oxford University. A Member of Parliament for a total of 20 years, representing Chester for 3; Whitby, Yorkshire for 12; and East Worcestershire for 5. A singer and organist, he was well versed in musical history, especially the development of Anglican church music. He wrote on musical topics, and one of the views he expressed was that choral church services were to be deplored because "the choirs often discourage the congregations from singing." He wrote the anthems "Gracious and Righteous" and "Withdraw Not Thou", & chants, anthems, introits & organ voluntaries. b. 1949 Meter: 8.8.8.6 Author of "What Meekness and What Majesty" in Celebrating Grace Hymnal Terry W. York is Professor of Christian Ministry and Church Music at Baylor University’s George W. Truett Theological Seminary. He joined the faculty in 1998 after serving three years as the Associate Pastor of Park Cities Baptist Church in Dallas, TX. He received the Bachelor of Arts degree from California Baptist University and his Master of Church Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. He has been Minister of Music in churches in California and Arizona. From 1984-1995 he served at the Baptist Sunday School Board (now LifeWay Christian Resources) in Nashville, TN. His duties there included being the Project Coordinator for The Baptist Hymnal, 1991. In all, Dr. York has published more than 40 hymns including the well-known Worthy of Worship. His hymn Give Us Courage was commissioned by the Truett Seminary administration and approved by the Truett Seminary faculty as the official Seminary Hymn in 2006. In addition to his hymns, Dr. York has published more than 60 choral anthem texts set by composers such as Bob Burroughs, David Danner, Tom Fettke, Benjamin Harlan, Mary McDonald, Earlene Rentz, David Schwoebel, Joseph Martin, Vicki Hancock Wright, Taylor Scott Davis, and Dan Goeller. The Worship Matrix, co-authored with David Bolin (Celebrating Grace, Inc., 2010), is the fourth of Dr. York’s books to have been translated into Chinese. In June 2008 it was his privilege to be one of two featured plenary speakers at The World Association of Chinese Church Musicians’ biannual conference which met in Kuching, Malaysia. In June 2009, the Baptist Church Music Conference, meeting in Nashville, TN, gave Dr. York the W. Hines Sims Award, its most prestigious recognition.
