Robert Morris

1818 - 1888 Hymnal Number: d38 Author of "Memories of Galilee" in Favorite Gospel Songs. New ed. Morris, Robert, LL.D., born Aug. 31, 1818, is a member of the Presbyterian Church, and an extensive writer on Freemasonry. In 1868 he visited the Holy Land on behalf of the Freemasons of America, the outcome of which was his work, Freemasonry in the Holy Land. He is the author of some 300 poetical pieces. One of these, "Each gentle dove and sighing bough" (Evening), is in H. R. William Ellsworth Witter

1854 - 1954 Person Name: Will E. Witter Hymnal Number: d208 Author of "Come, sinner, come" in Favorite Gospel Songs. New ed. Witter, Will Ellsworth, was born Dec. 9, 1854, near La Grange, New York, and educated at the Genessee State Normal School, New York, and the University of Rochester. From the latter he passed in 1880 to the Rochester Baptist Theological Seminary, and in 1884 he entered the Baptist Ministry. He has written several songs and poems, one of which:— While Jesus whispers to you (The Divine Call) has come into somewhat prominent use. It was written in July 1878, and originated mainly in the great anxiety of the author respecting two of his pupils. In 1878 it was set to music by H. R. Palmer, and included in his Book of Anthems, 1878: from whence it passed into Good as Gold, and I. D. Sankey's Sacred Songs and Solos, London 1881. -- John Julian, Dictionary of Hymnology (1907)

Evangelical. Licensed 1869, pastor Trinity Church, York Penn., in 1873-1874; editor of The Messenger in 1870s and 1880s; taught Bible in Mt. Hermon school, Northfield, Massachusetts. Was associated with D.L. Moody. Went with the United Evangelical CHurch in the schism, was editor of its Evangel 1894-1902. Editor of and hymn-contributor to Evangelischer Gesangbuch and Hymn Book of the United Evangelical Church. Bishop of that denomination 1902-1910. Singing evangelist and hymn-writer. Son of Patrick and Alice O'Connor Lane (formerly "Lean"), Irish immigrants. He was an advertising solicitor for New York newspapers, when he was converted to Christianity and under the tutelage of Dr. T. De Witt Talmadge, he became a mission worker, and later conducted revival meetings in the East before going West in 1893 to Kansas City, Missouri. --Information from multiple letters from Laura B.
