M. Lowrie Hofford

1825 - 1888 Person Name: M. Lowrie Hofford, D. D. Hymnal Number: 64 Author of "He that Soweth shall Reap" in Sunday School Anthem and Chorus Book Born: January 27, 1825, Doylestown, Pennsylvania. Died: January 9, 1888, Trenton, New Jersey. Hofford attended Lafayette and Princeton, where he graduated in 1849. He studied theology at the Princeton seminary for a year, and became principal of the Camden collegiate institute. While there, he organized a church at Beverly, New Jersey, being licensed by the Presbytery in Philadelphia in 1852. In 1855, he was ordained an evangelist in Burlington, New Jersey. In 1860, he began teaching at the Trenton Institute, and in 1863 took charge of a military institute at Allentown, Pennsylvania that was later incorporated as Muhlenberg College; he served there as a professor and later president. He taught and pastored at Camden and Beverly, New Jersey, and Doylestown, Pennsylvania (1868-78), then became pastor at Morrisville, Pennsylvania. --www.hymntime.com/tch

After teaching for two years, he joined the Fillmore Brothers Music House in Cincinnati, Ohio. As of 1880, he was teaching music in Douglas County, Colorado. In 1884, was an evangelist in California, and later was associated with evangelistic efforts in Texas, and taught music and Bible at Carlton College in Bonham, Texas. Rice Jones, 1823-1915 Born: April 18, 1823, Pompey Hollow, Onondaga County, New York. Died: 1915, Binghamton, New York. Buried: Oran Community Church Cemetery, Pompey, Onondaga County, New York. Daughter of Eleazer Rice, Jones lived in Onondaga County, New York. Her girlhood was spent on a farm, receiving what education the country schools and one term at high school could provide. She was always fond of reading, and was a great singer, with a clear ringing voice. On July 7, 1844, she married a son of Rev. Zenas Jones; her husband died in 1879. Her song writing career began when her poetry came to the attention of Dr. M. J. Munger, who asked if she could write some Sunday school hymns for him. She went on to write for Daniel Towner, J. C. Born at Otselic, NY, he became a Baptist minister. He was educated at Hamlton College, Clinton, NY. He earned his doctorate from Monongahela College, Jefferson, PA. That school closed in 1894. He pastored at North Stonington, CT, for a number of years. He also served at Plymouth, NY. He married Julia Tracy Sheffield, and they had a son, Arthur. He wrote a number of books and song books: “Grace Vernon Bussell, the heroine of western Australia” (1878); “Spicy breezes” (1883); “The day school crown” (1892); “The revival helper: a collection of songs for Christian work and worship” (1893); “Bright blossoms of song” (1895); “Zion’s delight” (1901); “The song of songs of the King and his bride-an interpretation” (1913); “The fallacies and vagaries of misinterpretation” (1914). Born near Lansing, MI, Angie was the wife of Free Methodist minister, Edwin W. Chapman. They had three children. She helped on his evangelism tours and rural preaching circuits. They worked in Sparta, MI, and helped found the first Free Methodist church in Grand Rapids, MI. She also wrote hymn lyrics. In 1888 they followed an evangelistic tour of Kansas, and them moved to Isabella County, MI. She died in Mt. Pleasant, MI. John Perry
