God, Be Merciful to Me

Meter: 7.7.7.7.7.7 Appears in 48 hymnals Topics: God as Good Lyrics: 1 God, be merciful to me, on your grace I rest my plea; your compassions overflow, blot out my transgressions now; wash me, make me pure within, cleanse, O cleanse me from my sin. 2 My transgressions I confess, grief and guilt my soul oppress; I have sinned against your grace and provoked you to your face; I confess your judgment just, speechless, in your mercy trust. 3 I am evil, born in sin; you desire all truth within. You alone my Savior are, teach your wisdom to my heart; make me pure, your grace bestow, wash me whiter than the snow. 4 Broken, humbled to the dust by your wrath and judgment just, let my contrite heart rejoice and in gladness hear your voice; from my sins, O hide your face, blot them out in boundless grace. 5 Gracious God, my heart renew, make my spirit right and true; let me not abandoned be, let your Spirit dwell in me; your salvation's joy impart, steadfast make my willing heart. 6 Sinners then shall learn from me and to God restored shall be; Savior, all my guilt remove, and my tongue shall sing your love; touch my silent lips, O Lord, and my mouth shall praise accord. 7 No attempted sacrifice has acceptance in your eyes; broken hearts are in your sight more than sacrificial rite; contrite spirit, pleading cries, you, O God, will not despise. 8 Prosper Zion in your grace and her broken walls replace; then our righteous sacrifice shall delight your holy eyes; freewill off'rings, gladly made, on your altar shall be laid. Used With Tune: GETHSEMANE Text Sources: Psalter, 1912, alt.

We are the flock he surely feeds, the sheep who by his hand were made. 3 O enter then his gates with joy, within his courts his praise proclaim! Let thankful songs your tongues employ. O bless and magnify his name! 4 Because the LORD our God is good, his mercy is forever sure. His faithfulness at all times stood and shall from age to age endure. Give Thanks unto the LORD Our God

Hymnal: Christian Worship #107C (2021) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Topics: God as Good Lyrics: 1 Give thanks unto the LORD our God. How good and kind is he, whose tender mercy shall endure through all eternity. 2 Let God's redeemed repeat these words and give him thanks and praise who rescued them from hostile hands, preserved them all their days. 3 He gathered them from out the lands, from north, south, east, and west. They strayed in desert's pathless way, no city found to rest. 4 Their weary soul within them faints when thirst and hunger press; in trouble then they cried to God; he saved them from distress. 5 He made the way before them straight, and he became their guide, that they might to a city go and there in peace abide. 6 Let all the children of the LORD now praise him for his grace, and for his works of wonder done in ev'ry time and place! O Praise the LORD, for He Is Good

Hymnal: Christian Worship #106C (2021) Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Topics: God as Good Lyrics: 1 O praise the LORD, for he is good; give thanks and bless his name; his lovingkindness changes not from age to age the same. What tongue can tell his mighty deeds, his wondrous works and ways? O who can show his glory forth, or utter all his praise? 2 O LORD, remember me in grace, let me salvation see; the grace you show to all your saints, that grace reveal to me. Let me behold your people's good and in their joy rejoice, and with your blest inheritance let me lift up my voice. 3 O save us, LORD, our gracious God, deliver us from shame, that we may triumph in your praise and bless your holy name. Blest be the LORD, our faithful God, all praise to him accord; let all the people say, "Amen!" Forever praise the LORD! Scripture: Psalm 106 Languages: English Tune Title: GRATUS

Richard Redhead

1820 - 1901 Topics: God as Good Composer of "GETHSEMANE" in Christian Worship Richard Redhead (b. Harrow, Middlesex, England, 1820; d. Hellingley, Sussex, England, 1901) was a chorister at Magdalen College, Oxford. At age nineteen he was invited to become organist at Margaret Chapel (later All Saints Church), London. Greatly influencing the musical tradition of the church, he remained in that position for twenty-five years as organist and an excellent trainer of the boys' choirs. Redhead and the church's rector, Frederick Oakeley, were strongly committed to the Oxford Movement, which favored the introduction of Roman elements into Anglican worship. Together they produced the first Anglican plainsong psalter, Laudes Diurnae (1843). Redhead spent the latter part of his career as organist at St. Mary Magdalene Church in Paddington (1864-1894). Marty Haugen

b. 1950 Topics: God as Good Author of "Your Love Is Never-Ending" in Christian Worship Marty Haugen (b. 1950), is a prolific liturgical composer with many songs included in hymnals across the liturgical spectrum of North American hymnals and beyond, with many songs translated into different languages. He was raised in the American Lutheran Church, received a BA in psychology from Luther College, yet found his first position as a church musician in a Roman Catholic parish at a time when the Roman Catholic Church was undergoing profound liturgical and musical changes after Vatican II. Finding a vocation in that parish to provide accessible songs for worship, he continued to compose and to study, receiving an MA in pastoral studies at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul Minnesota. A number of liturgical settings were prepared for the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and more than 400 of his compositions are available from several publishers, especially GIA Publications, who also produced some 30 recordings of his songs. He is composer-in-residence at Mayflower Community Congregational Church in Minneapolis and continues to compose and travel to speak and teach at worship events around the world. Emily Brink
