Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise

Author: Walter Chalmers Smith (1824-1908) Meter: 11.11.11.11 Appears in 213 hymnals Topics: Praise of God Lyrics: 1 Immortal, invisible, God only wise, in light inaccessible hid from our eyes, most blessed, most glorious, the Ancient of Days, almighty, victorious, thy great name we praise. 2 Unresting, unhasting, and silent as light, nor wanting, nor wasting, thou rulest in might; thy justice like mountains high soaring above thy clouds which are fountains of goodness and love. 3 To all life thou givest, to both great and small; in all life thou livest, the true life of all; we blossom and flourish as leaves on the tree, then wither and perish, but nought changeth thee. 4 Great Source of all glory and wisdom and light, thine angels adore thee, all veiling their sight; all laud we would render: O help us to see 'tis only the splendour of light hideth thee. Scripture: Exodus 13:17-22 Used With Tune: ST DENIO

Glorious Things of Thee Are Spoken

Author: John Newton (1725-1807) Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Appears in 1,300 hymnals Topics: Praise of God Lyrics: 1 Glorious things of thee are spoken, Zion, city of our God; he whose word cannot be broken formed thee for his own abode. On the rock of ages founded, what can shake thy sure repose? With salvation's walls surrounded, thou mayest smile at all thy foes. 2 See! The streams of living waters, springing from eternal love, well supply thy sons and daughters and all fear of want remove. Who can faint, when such a river ever flows their thirst to assuage? Grace, which like the Lord, the giver, never fails from age to age. 3 Round each habitation hovering, see the cloud and fire appear for a glory and a covering -- showing that the Lord is near. Thus they march, the pillar leading, light by night, and shade by day; daily on the manna feeding which God gives them when they pray. 4 Saviour, if of Zion's city I through grace a member am, let the world deride or pity, I will glory in thy name. Fading is the world's best pleasure, all its boasted pomp or show: solid joys and lasting treasures none but Zion's children know. Scripture: Exodus 16:2-15 Used With Tune: AUSTRIA

When Morning Gilds the Skies

Author: Edward Caswall (1814 - 1878) Meter: 6.6.6.6.6.6 Appears in 704 hymnals Topics: Praise of God Lyrics: 1 When morning gilds the skies, my heart awaking cries: "May Jesus Christ be praised!" Alike at work and prayer to Jesus I repair: "May Jesus Christ be praised!" 2 Whene'er the sweet church bell peals over hill and dell, may Jesus Christ be praised! O hark to what it sings, as joyously it rings, may Jesus Christ be praised! 3 In heaven's eternal bliss the loveliest strain is this, may Jesus Christ be praised! The power of darkness fear when this sweet chant they hear: may Jesus Christ be praised! 4 To God, the Word, on high the hosts of angels cry: "May Jesus Christ be praised!" Let mortals, too, upraise their voice in hymns of praise: "May Jesus Christ be praised!" 5 Let earth's wide circle round in joyful notes resound: "May Jesus Christ be praised!" Let air, and sea, and sky, from depth to height reply: "May Jesus Christ be praised!" 6 Be this while life is mine, my canticle divine: may Jesus Christ be praised! Be this the eternal song through ages all along, may Jesus Christ be praised! Scripture: Luke 4:14-21 Used With Tune: LAUDES DOMINI Text Sources: Katolisches Gesangbuch, Würzburg, 1828
