Rock of Ages, Cleft for Me

Author: Augustus M. Toplady Meter: 7.7.7.7.7.7 Appears in 2,914 hymnals Scripture: Titus 3:5 Lyrics: 1 Rock of Ages, cleft for me, let me hide myself in thee; let the water and the blood, from thy wounded side which flowed, be of sin the double cure, save from wrath and make me pure. 2 Not the labors of my hands can fulfill thy law's demands; could my zeal no respite know, could my tears forever flow, all for sin could not atone; thou must save and thou alone. 3 Nothing in my hand I bring, simply to the cross I cling; naked, come to thee for dress, helpless, look to thee for grace; foul, I to the fountain fly, wash me, Savior, or I die! 4 While I draw this fleeting breath, when my eyes shall close in death, when I soar to worlds unknown, see thee on thy judgment throne, Rock of Ages, cleft for me, let me hide myself in thee. Topics: Atonement; Blood of Christ; Cleansing; Our Death; Jesus Christ Death; Jesus Christ Names; Jesus Christ Refuge; Jesus Christ Savior; Salvation; Sanctification Used With Tune: TOPLADY

Not What My Hands Have Done

Author: Horatius Bonar Meter: 6.6.8.6 D Appears in 119 hymnals Scripture: Titus 3:5 Lyrics: 1 Not what my hands have done can save my guilty soul; not what my toiling flesh has borne can make my spirit whole. Not what I feel or do can give me peace with God; not all my prayers and sighs and tears can bear my awful load. 2 Your voice alone, O Lord, can speak to me of grace; your power alone, O Son of God, can all my sin erase. No other work but yours, no other blood will do; no strength but that which is divine can bear me safely through. 3 I praise the Christ of God; I rest on love divine; and with unfaltering lip and heart I call this Savior mine. Hymn 111

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 119 hymnals Scripture: Titus 3:3-7 First Line: Lord, we confess our num'rous faults Lyrics: [Lord, we confess our num'rous faults, How great our guilt has been! Foolish and vain were all our thoughts, And all our lives were sin. But, O my soul! for ever praise, For ever love his name, Who turns thy feet from dangerous ways Of folly, sin, and shame.] ['Tis not by works of righteousness Which our own hands have done; But we are saved by sovereign grace Abounding through his Son.] 'Tis from the mercy of our God That all our hopes begin; 'Tis by the water and the blood Our souls are washed from sin. 'Tis through the purchase of his death Who hung upon the tree, The Spirit is sent down to breathe On such dry bones as we. Raised from the dead we live anew; And, justified by grace, We shall appear in glory too, And see our Father's face.

There's a wideness in God's mercy

Author: Frederick William Faber (1814-1863) Meter: 8.7.8.7 Appears in 902 hymnals Scripture: Titus 3:4-7 Lyrics: 1 There’s a wideness in God’s mercy, like the wideness of the sea; there’s a kindness in his justice, which is more than liberty. 2 There is no place where earth's sorrows are more felt than in God's heaven: there is no place where earth's failings have such kindly judgment given. 3 For the love of God is broader than the measure of the mind: and the heart of the Eternal is most wonderfully kind. 4 If our love were but more simple, we should take him at his word; and our lives be filled with glory from the glory of the Lord. God, We Praise You!

Author: Christopher Idle Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Appears in 30 hymnals Scripture: Titus 3:7 First Line: God, we praise you! God we bless you! Lyrics: 1 God, we praise you! God, we bless you! God, we name you sovereign Lord! Mighty King whom angels worship, Father, by your church adored: all creation shows your glory, heaven and earth draw near your throne singing "Holy, holy, holy, Lord of hosts, and God alone!" 2 True apostles, faithful prophets, saints who set their world ablaze, martyrs, once unknown, unheeded, join one growing song of praise, while your church on earth confesses one majestic Trinity: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, God, our hope eternally. 3 Jesus Christ, the king of glory, everlasting Son of God, humble was your virgin mother, hard the lonely path you trod: by your cross is sin defeated, hell confronted face to face, heaven opened to believers, sinners justified by grace. 4 Christ, at God's right hand victorious, you will judge the world you made; Lord, in mercy help your servants for whose freedom you have paid: raise us up from dust to glory, guard us from all sin today; King enthroned above all praises, save your people, God, we pray. Topics: All Saints' Day; Biblical Canticles; God Power; God Sovereign; Heritage; Martyrs; Praise of God; Trinity Sunday Used With Tune: RUSTINGTON Text Sources: Paraphrase of Te Deum laudamus

By Grace I Am an Heir of Heaven

Author: Christian L. Scheidt; H. Brueckner Meter: 9.8.9.8.8.8 Appears in 9 hymnals Scripture: Titus 3:7 Lyrics: 1 By grace I am an heir of heaven: why doubt this, O my trembling heart? If what the Scriptures promise clearly is true and firm in ev'ry part, this also must be truth divine: by grace a crown of life is mine. 2 By grace alone shall I inherit that blissful home beyond the skies. Works count for naught, the Lord incarnate hath won for me the heav'nly prize. Salvation by his death he wrought, his grace alone my pardon bought. 3 By grace! These precious words remember when sorely by thy sins oppressed, when Satan comes to vex thy spirit, when troubled conscience sighs for rest; what reason cannot comprehend, God doth to thee by grace extend. 4 By grace! Be this in death my comfort; despite my fears, 'tis well with me. I know my sin in all its greatness, but also him who sets me free. My heart to naught but joy gives place since I am saved by grace, by grace. Titus 3:3-9: How wretched was our former state

Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 5 hymnals Scripture: Titus 3:3-9 First Line: How wretched was our former state Lyrics: How wretched was our former state, when, slaves to Satan’s sway, With hearts disordered and impure, o’erwhelmed in sin we lay! But, O my soul! for ever praise, for ever love his name, Who turned thee from the fatal paths of folly, sin, and shame. Vain and presumptuous is the trust which in our works we place, Salvation from a higher source flows to the human race. ’Tis from the mercy of our God that all our hopes begin; His mercy saved our souls from death, and washed our souls from sin. His Spirit, through the Saviour shed, its sacred fire imparts, Refines our dross, and Love divine rekindles in our hearts. Thence raised from death, we live anew; and, justified by grace, We hope in glory to appear, and see our Father’s face. Let all who hold this faith and hope in holy deeds abound; Thus faith approves itself sincere, by active virtue crowned.
