While Shepherds Watched Their Flocks by Night

Author: Nahum Tate Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 1,106 hymnals Lyrics: 1 While shepherds watched their flocks by night, All seated on the ground, The angel of the Lord came down, And glory shone around. "Fear not," said he, for mighty dread Had seized their troubled mind; "Glad tidings of great joy I bring To you and all mankind. 2 "To you, in David's town, this day, Is born of David's line A Savior, who is Christ the Lord; And this shall be the sign: The heav'nly Babe you there shall find To human view displayed, All meanly wrapped in swaddling-clothes And in a manger laid." 3 Thus spake the seraph,--and forthwith Appeared a shining throng Of angels, praising God, and thus Addressed their joyful song: "All glory be to God on high, And to the earth be peace; Good will henceforth from Heav'n to men Begin and never cease." The Two Advents

Author: George W. Doane Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 6 hymnals First Line: He came not with His heav’nly crown, Lyrics: 1 He came not with His heav’nly crown, His scepter clad with power; His coming was in feebleness, The infant of an hour. A humble manger cradled first The virgin’s holy birth, And lowing herds companioned there The Lord of Heav’n and earth. 2 He came not in His robe of wrath, With arm outstretched to slay; But, on the darkling paths of earth, To pour celestial day, To guide in peace the wandering feet, The broken heart to bind; And bear upon the painful cross The sins of human kind. 3 And Thou hast borne them, Savior meek! And therefore unto Thee In humbleness and gratitude, Our hearts shall offered be; And greenly, as the festal bough That on Thy altar lies, Our souls, our bodies, all be Thine, A living sacrifice! 4 Yet once again Thy sign shall be Upon the heav’ns displayed, And earth and its inhabitants, Be terribly afraid; For not in weakness clad Thou com’st Our woes, our sins, to bear, But girt with all Thy Father’s might, His vengeance to declare. 5 The terrors of that awful day, Oh! who shall understand? Or who abide, when Thou in wrath Shall lift Thy holy hand? The earth shall quake, the sea shall roar, The sun in heav’n grow pale, But Thou hast sworn, and wilt not change, Thy faithful shall not fail! 6 Then grant us, Savior! so to pass Our time in trembling here, That when, upon the clouds of heav’n, Thy glory shall appear, Uplifting high our joyful heads, In triumph we may rise, And enter, with Thy angel train, Thy temple in the skies! God Is Our Refuge and Our Strength

Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 24 hymnals Lyrics: 1 God is our refuge and our strength, our ever-present aid, and therefore though the earth remove, we will not be afraid; though hills amidst the seas be cast, though foaming waters roar, yea, though the mighty billows shake the mountains on the shore. 2 A river flows whose streams make glad the city of our God, the holy place wherein the Lord Most High has his abode. Since God is in the midst of her, unmoved her walls shall stand, for God will be her early help, when trouble is at hand. 3 The nations raged, the kingdoms moved, but when his voice was heard, the troubled earth was stilled to peace before his mighty word. The Lord of Hosts is on our side, our safety to secure; the God of Jacob is for us a refuge strong and sure. 4 O come, behold what wondrous works Jehovah's hand has wrought; come, see what desolation great he on the earth has brought. To utmost ends of all the earth he causes war to cease; the weapons of the strong destroyed, he makes abiding peace. 5 "Be still and know that I am God, o'er all exalted high; the subject nations of the earth my name shall magnify." The Lord of Hosts is on our side, our safety to secure, the God of Jacob is for us a refuge strong and sure. How Vast the Benefits Divine

Author: Augustus M. Toplady; Rev. Dewey Westra Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 26 hymnals Lyrics: 1 How vast the benefits divine which we in Christ possess! We are redeemed from sin and shame, and called to holiness. 'Tis not for works that we have done, these all to him we owe; but he of his electing love salvation doth bestow. 2 To thee, O Lord, alone is due all glory and renown; aught to ourselves we dare not take, or rob thee of thy crown. Thou wast thyself our Surety in God's redemption plan; in thee his grace was given us, long ere the world began. 3 Safe in the arms of sov'ereign love we ever shall remain; nor shall the rage of earth or hell make thy sure counsel vain. Not one of all the chosen race but shall to heav'n attain; here they will share abounding grace, and there with Jesus reign. Lift Up Your Heads In Joyful Hope

Author: Martin Madan; Richard W. Adams Appears in 30 hymnals Lyrics: 1 Lift up your heads in joyful hope, Salute the happy morn; Hear heav’nly power proclaim the hour: Lo, Jesus Christ is born. All glory be to God on high, To Him all praise is due; The promise sealed, the Lord revealed, He proves the record true. 2 Let joy around like rivers flow, Flow on, and still increase, Spread o’er the earth at Jesus’ birth, With Heav’n and men at peace. Rejoice, come see, salvation free For Adam’s helpless race: From Heaven’s throne to save His own, Messiah comes with grace. 3 Then let us join the skies above, Where shining seraphs sing; Join angel powers, their Lord is ours, Our prophet, priest, and king. The tidings of great joy be spread To earth’s remotest bound; With heav’nly host, to every coast We raise the joyful sound. My Soul in Silence Waits for God

Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 17 hymnals Lyrics: 1 My soul in silence waits for God, My Savior He has proved; He only is my rock and tower; I never shall be moved. My honor is secure with God, My Savior He has proved; My refuge and my rock of strength Are found in God alone. 2 My enemies my ruin seek, They plot with fraud and guile; Deceitful, they pretend to bless, But inwardly revile. My soul, in silence wait for God; He is my help approved, He only is my rock and tower, And I shall not be moved. 3 My honor is secure with God, My Savior He is known; My refuge and my rock of strength Are found in God alone. On Him, ye people, evermore Rely with confidence; Before Him pour ye out your heart, For God is our defense. 4 For surely men are helpers vain, The high and the abased; Yea, lighter than a breath are thy When in the balance placed. Trust not in harsh oppression's power Nor in unrighteous gain; If wealth increase, yet on your gold Ye set your hearts in vain. 5 For God has spoken o'er and o'er, And unto me has shown, That saving power and lasting strength Belong to Him alone. Yea, lovingkindness evermore Belongs to Thee, O Lord; And Thou according to his work Dost every man reward. Author: John H. Holmes Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 24 hymnals Lyrics: 1. O God, whose love is over all The children of Thy grace, Whose rich and tender blessings fall On every age and place, Hear Thou the songs and prayers we raise In eager joy to Thee, And teach us, as we sound Thy praise, In all things Thee to see. 2. To see Thee in the sun by day And in the stars by night, In waving grass and ocean spray And leaves and flowers bright; To hear Thy voice, like spoken word, In every breeze that blows, In every song of every bird, And every brook that flows. 3. The Hidden Years At Nazareth

Author: Allen E. Cross Appears in 13 hymnals First Line: The hidden years at Nazareth! Lyrics: 1 The hidden years at Nazareth! How deep and still they seem, Like rivers flowing in the dark, Or waters in a dream! Like waters under Syrian stars Reflecting lights above, Repeating in their silent depths The wonder of God’s love. 2 The hidden years at Nazareth! How deep and true they lie, As open to the smile of God As to the Syrian sky! As open to the heart of man As to the genial sun, With dreams of vast adventuring, And deeds of kindness done! 3 The hidden years at Nazareth! How radiant they rise, With life and death in balance laid Before a Lad’s clear eyes! O soul of youth, forever choose, Forgetting fate or fear, To live for truth or die with God, Who stands beside thee here! Used With Tune: BETHLEHEM

Bethlehem

Author: Henry W. Frost Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 1 hymnal First Line: O Bethlehem, sweet Bethlehem Lyrics: 1 O Bethlehem, sweet Bethlehem, To thee my song I sing; To thee I raise my humble lay, Thou city of the King. Above thy courts the angels sang Their brightest seraph song, And, faintly echoing their refrain, I would their praise prolong. 2 I see thy wide and wooded fields, Thy rocky slopes and hills, Thy valleys deep, where waters flow, In sparkling, tuneful rills. Thy balmy air is rich with scent, Of olive and of vine, Thy trees hang low with ripened fruit, Thy vats o’erflow with wine. 3 Thy shepherd boys, like David, lead Their flocks with winsome call, Across thy uplands bright, and through Deep vales where shadows fall. Thy dusky men and ruddy maids Are scattered ’cross the plain— Where Ruth once followed Boaz’s men— And harvest golden grain. 4 Thy mothers hush their babes to rest, With hymns of David’s Lord, Thy sing how in yon cave He came To heav’nly love afford; The scene is fair, and all is joy About thy well kept walls; Yea, sorrows never touch thy gates, Thy hearthstones or thy halls. 5 Beyond is darksome Calvary And sad Gethsemane; But shadows flee, bright Bethlehem, Whene’er they come to thee! Lo, as I gaze, a vision breaks: Behold, I see the Child Lie once again in cave of stone, All pure and undefiled. 6 The virgin mother bends above, To watch the face divine, From which, so fair and beautiful, Bright rays of glory shine; And oh, what longings fill my soul, As I behold my Lord! I fall and worship at His feet, My every sin abhorred. 7 And here I pray to be like Him, A holy infant child, All meek and gentle, sweet and good, All pure and undefiled! And so to thee, O Bethlehem, My song of love I sing; All praise to thee, sweet Bethlehem, Thou city of my king! Used With Tune: BETHLEHEM Text Sources: Pilgrim Songs by Henry W. How Bright These Glorious Spirits Shine!

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 156 hymnals First Line: How bright these glorious spirits shine Lyrics: 1 How bright these glorious spirits shine! Whence all their white array? How came they to the blissful seats of everlasting day? Lo! these are they from suff'rings great who came to realms of light! and in the blood of Christ have washed those robes which shine so bright. 2 Now, with triumphal palms, they stand before the throne on high, and serve the God they love, amidst the glories of the sky. His presence fills each heart with joy, tunes ev'ry mouth to sing: by day, by night, the sacred courts with glad hosannas ring. 3 Hunger and thirst are felt no more, nor suns with scorching ray; God is their sun, whose cheering beams diffuse eternal day. The Lamb which dwells amidst the throne shall o'er them still preside, feed them with nourishment divine, and all their footsteps guide. 4 'Mong pastures green he'll lead his flock where living streams appear; and God the Lord from ev'ry eye shall wipe off ev'ry tear. To him who sits upon the throne, the God whom we adore, and to the Lamb that once was slain, be glory evermore!
