The God of Abraham Praise

Author: Daniel ben Judah; Thomas Olivers Meter: 6.6.8.4 D Appears in 459 hymnals Topics: Church As Covenant People Lyrics: 1 The God of Abraham praise, who reigns enthroned above, Ancient of everlasting days and God of love. Jehovah! Great I AM! by earth and heav'n confessed; I bow and bless the sacred name, forever blest. 2 The God of Abraham praise, at whose supreme command from earth I rise and seek the joys at his right hand. I all on earth forsake, its wisdom, fame, and pow'r, and him my only portion make, my shield and tow'r. 3 He by himself hath sworn, I on his oath depend; I shall, on eagles' wings upborne, to heav'n ascend. I shall behold his face, I shall his pow'r adore, and sing the wonders of his grace forevermore. 4 The goodly land I see, with peace and plenty blest, a land of sacred liberty and endless rest. There milk and honey flow, and oil and wine abound, and trees of life forever grow, with mercy crowned. 5 There dwells the Lord our King, the Lord our Righteousness, triumphant o'er the world and sin, the Prince of Peace. On Zion's sacred height his kingdom he maintains, and glorious with his saints in light forever reigns. 6 The whole triumphant host gives thanks to God on high; "Hail, Father, Son, and Holy Ghost!" they ever cry. Hail, Abraham's God and mine! I join the heav'nly lays; all might and majesty are thine, and endless praise. Scripture: Genesis 22:16-17 Used With Tune: LEONI Text Sources: Based on a Jewish text of Daniel ben Judah

Through the night of doubt and sorrow

Author: Sabine Baring-Gould, 1834 - 1924; Bernhardt Severin Ingemann, 1789 - 1862 Meter: 8.7.8.7 Appears in 325 hymnals Topics: The Church The People of God Lyrics: 1. Through the night of doubt and sorrow Onward goes the pilgrim band, Singing songs of expectation, Marching to the promised land. 2. Clear before us through the darkness Gleams and burns the guiding light; Brother clasps the hand of brother, Stepping fearless through the night. 3. One the light of God’s own presence O’er his ransomed people shed, Chasing far the gloom and terror, Brightening all the path we tread: 4. One the object of our journey, One the faith which never tires, One the earnest looking forward, One the hope our God inspires; 5. One the strain that lips of thousands Lift as from the heart of one; One the conflict, one the peril, One the march in God begun: 6. One the gladness of rejoicing On the far eternal shore, Where the one Almighty Father Reigns in love for evermore. 4 Onward, therefore, pilgrim brothers, Onward with the Cross our aid! Bear its shame and fight its battle, Till we rest beneath its shade; 8. Soon shall come the great awakening, Soon the rending of the tomb; Then the scattering of all shadows, And the end of toil and gloom. Used With Tune: MARCHING

Forward! be our watch-word

Author: Henry Alford, 1810 - 71 Appears in 344 hymnals Topics: The Church The People of God Lyrics: 1 Forward! be our watchword, Steps and voices joined; Seek the things before us, Not a look behind; Burns the fiery pillar At our army's head; Who shall dream of shrinking, By our Captain led? Forward through the desert, Through the toil and fight; Jordan flows before us, Sion beams with light. 2 Glories upon glories Hath our God prepared, By the souls that love Him One day to be shared; Eye hath not beheld them, Ear hath never heard; Nor of these hath uttered Thought or speech a word. Forward, marching eastward Where the heaven is bright, Till the veil be lifted, Till our faith be sight. 3 Far o'er yon horizon Rise the city towers; Where our God abideth, That fair home is ours: Flash the streets with jasper, Shine the gates with gold; Flows the gladdening river, Shedding joys untold: Thither, onward thither, In the Spirit's might; Pilgrims, to your country, Forward into light! 4 To the Father's glory Loudest anthems raise; To the Son and Spirit Echo songs of praise; To the Lord almighty, Blessèd Three in One, Be by men and angels Endless honor done. Weak are earthly praises, Dull the songs of night; Forward into triumph Forward into light! Used With Tune: FORWARD (SMART)

O God, our help in ages past

Author: Isaac Watts, 1674-1748 Appears in 1,258 hymnals Topics: The Church The People of God Lyrics: 1 O God, our help in ages past, Our hope for years to come, Our shelter from the stormy blast, And our eternal home: 2 Under the shadow of thy throne Thy saints have dwelt secure; Sufficient is thine arm alone, And our defence is sure. A-men. 3 Before the hills in order stood, Or earth received her frame, From everlasting thou art God, To endless years the same. 4 A thousand ages in thy sight Are like an evening gone, Short as the watch that ends the night Before the rising sun. 5 Time, like an ever-rolling stream, Bears all its sons away; They fly forgotten, as a dream Dies at the opening day. 6 O God, our help in ages past, Our hope for years to come, Be thou our guide while troubles last, And our eternal home! Amen. Scripture: Psalm 90 Used With Tune: ST. ANNE

Lord, speak to me, that I may speak

Author: Frances Ridley Havergal (1836-1879) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 466 hymnals Topics: Dedication of people Lyrics: 1 Lord, speak to me, that I may speak in living echoes of thy tone; as thou hast sought, so let me seek thy erring children lost and lone. 2 O lead me, Lord, that I may lead the wandering and the wavering feet; O feed me, Lord, that I may feed thy hungering ones with manna sweet. 3 O strengthen me, that, while I stand firm on the rock, and strong in thee, I may stretch out a loving hand to wrestlers with the troubled sea. 4 O teach me, Lord, that I may teach the precious things thou dost impart; and wing my words, that they may reach the hidden depths of many a heart. 5 O give thine own sweet rest to me, that I may speak with soothing power a word in season, as from thee, to weary ones in needful hour. 6 O use me, Lord, use even me, just as thou wilt, and when, and where, until thy blessèd face I see, thy rest, thy joy, thy glory share. Scripture: Hebrews 12:12-13 Used With Tune: THE HOLY SON
