F. E. Belden

1858 - 1945 Person Name: Franklin E. Belden (1858-1945) Scripture: Isaiah 1:18 Author of "Al contemplarte, mi Salvador" in Himnario Adventista del Séptimo Día Belden was born in Battle Creek, Michigan in 1858. He began writing music in his late teenage years after moving to California with his family. For health reasons he later moved to Colorado. He returned to Battle Creek with his wife in the early 1880s, and there he became involved in Adventist Church publishing. F. E. Belden wrote many hymn tunes, gospel songs, and related texts in the early years of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Belden was able to rapidly write both music and poetry together which enabled him to write a song to fit a sermon while it was still being delivered. He also wrote songs for evangelist Billy Sunday. Though Belden’s later years were marred by misunderstandings with the church leadership over his royalties, he did donate his papers and manuscripts to the church’s seminary at his death. 1835 - 1909 Person Name: James Langran Scripture: Isaiah 1:17 Composer of "LANGRAN " in Lift Up Your Hearts James Langran (b. St. Pancras, London, England, November 10, 1835; d. Tottenham, London, England, June 8, 1909) studied organ as a youth but did not receive his Bachelor of Music degree from Oxford until he was forty-nine years old. He had several organist positions–the longest was at St. Paul's Church, Tottenham, England, from 1870 to 1909. He also taught music at St. Katherine's Training College for Schoolmistresses (1878-1909). Music editor of theNew Mitre Hymnal　(1875), Langran composed around fifty hymn tunes and contributed several of them to early editions of Hymns Ancient and Modern. Bert Polman

1856 - 1927 Scripture: Isaiah 1:18 Composer of "[The kind Shepherd seeks for the wandering sheep]" in The Joy Bells of Canaan or Burning Bush Songs No. 2 Rv Frederick Arthur Graves USA 1856-1927. Born at Williamstown, MA, he was raised in a Christian family, but was orphaned at age 9 after the death of his father, a taylor, then three years later his mother (tuberculosis), he lived on a farm with a family names Hollis that worked him hard and treated him poorly. He was diagnosed with epilepsy when 14. At 21 he moved to Nobles County, MN, and it seemed that his seizures had stopped. Grateful for that, he served the American Sunday School Union as an organizer and evangelist. He was musical, and after age 35 wrote 43 songs. He, with wife Vina, raised three children, Arthur, Irene, and Carl. He studied Bible and music in Chicago, IL and Northfield, MA. Returning to Minneapolis and hearing evangelist John A Dowie, he experienced permanent healing, which provided a backdrop for his gospel songs. He was ordained an Assemblies of God minister in 1916. Later, he moved to Zion Hill,IL, where he lived the rest of his life. He died at Zion City, IL. Nearly 1000 people attended his funeral there. John Perry

1834 - 1917 Scripture: Isaiah 1:18 Composer of "[Wonderful Savior forgiveness bestow]" in Good Will JAIRUS MAXSON STILLMAN, Mus. Doc., Professor of Music in Milton College. As a composer he has had many valuable contributions, especially to sacred music, but, while his work in that direction has been most important, his labors have been more especially directed to the educational side of the art. For the past fifteen years, with brief interruptions, he has filled his present collegiate chair, and his work prior to the acceptance of this position was most active, varied and successful. Mr. STILLMAN was born February 20, 1834, in Alfred, Allegany Co., N.Y., the third in order of birth of the six children of Maxson and Lydia (CHAPMAN) STILLMAN. His father, a tenor singer of talent, had not only for many years led the choir of the large church at Alfred of which he was a member, but had taught singing schools in many places surrounding his home. His son inherited great aptitude for music, and at the age of ten years could read plain music at sight. He accompanied his father to singing schools, and made rapid progress in the mastery of the principles of music. He attended the singing classes in Alfred Academy. He is the associate author of "Good-Will for Sabbath Schools," "The Cluster," and "Anthem Treasures," the latter two being well-known and popular anthem books. He has also composed a large number of pieces for other anthem and Gospel hymn books, and a number of songs published in sheet music form. At Chicago he acted as one of the judges, with Prof. T. Martin TOWNE and others, in selecting from 700 original pieces of music, and in critically editing those which should be published in the work called "International Lesson Hymnal No. 1," published by David C. COOK. In 1884 an excellent article on "Church Music and How to Sustain it," written by Dr. STILLMAN, appeared in the "Seventh-day Baptist Quarterly." b. 1948 Scripture: Isaiah 1-66 Author of "Song of the Prophets" in Lift Up Your Hearts Michael Morgan (b. 1948) is a church musician, Psalm scholar, and collector of English Bibles and Psalters from Atlanta, Georgia. After almost 40 years, he now serves as Organist Emeritus for Atlanta’s historic Central Presbyterian Church, and as Seminary Musician at Columbia Theological Seminary. He holds degrees from Florida State University and Atlanta University, and did post-graduate study with composer Richard Purvis in San Francisco. He has played recitals, worship services, and master classes across the U. S., and in England, France, Spain, Switzerland, and Germany. He is author of the Psalter for Christian Worship (1999; rev. 2010), and a regular contributor in the field of psalmody (most recently to the Reformed collections Psalms for All Seasons and Lift Up Your Hearts, and the new Presbyterian hymnal, Glory to God). Herman G. Stuempfle

1923 - 2007 Person Name: Herman G. Stuempfle Jr, 1923-2007 Scripture: Isaiah 1:17 Author of "How Long, O Lord, How Long " in Lift Up Your Hearts Rev. Dr. Herman G. Stuempfle, Jr., 83, died Tuesday, March 13, 2007, after a long illness. Born April 2, 1923, in Clarion, he was the son of the late Herman G. and Helen (Wolfe) Stuempfle, Sr. Stuempfle lived most of his life in Gettysburg, PA. He served as President of the Lutheran Theological Seminary in Gettysburg. He attended Hughesville public schools, and was a graduate of Susquehanna University and the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg. He received additional advanced degrees from Union Theological Seminary in New York and a doctoral degree at Southern California School of Theology at Claremont. He retired in 1989. Rev. Dr. Stuempfle was the author of several books and numerous articles and lectures on preaching, history, and theology. He was also among the most honored and respected hymn writers of the 20th and 21st centuries. Rev. Dr. Stuempfle was known for his leadership in community and civic projects. Always taking an active stance on social issues, he participated in the creation of day care centers, served on the Gettysburg interchurch social action committee, helped create and support prison ministries and a homeless shelter, and tutored young people in the after school program of Christ Lutheran Church, where he was a long time member. --Excerpts from his obituary published in Evening Sun from Mar. 15 to Mar. 16, 2007
