Rudyard Kipling

1865 - 1936 Hymnal Number: 306 Author of "God of Our Fathers" in International Praise Born: December 30, 1865, Bombay (now Mumbai), India. Died: January 18, 1936, London, England. Buried: Westminster Abbey, London, England. Kipling, Rudyard, the well-known poet and story-teller, was born at Bombay, India, Dec. 30, 1865, and now (1906) lives at Burwash in Sussex. His noble poem, "The Recessional," was written in 1897 at the time of the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria, contributed to the Times for July 17, 1897, and first published by the author in his The Five Nations, 1903, p. 214, beginning "God of our fathers, known of old" (National). 1858 - 1918 Person Name: Rev. J. M. Driver Hymnal Number: 121 Composer of "[Wait my soul upon the Lord]" in International Praise Rv John Merritte Driver DD PhD DL USA 1857-1918. Born in Jefferson County,IL, he attended Illinois Agricultural College and Boston University. He married Elzire (Elsie) Louise Wiley in 1880, and they had an adopted son, Merritte. He was ordained a Methodist Episcopal minister and served, beginning in Prairie, IL in 1880, and at a number of churches in Chicago and other cities. He pastored the People's Church, Chicago, IL, 1902-07. He was a member of the American & Asiatic Archaelogical Society. He traveled extensively in Europe. He was a lecturer, orator, and writer. He wrote several books, including fiction, history, travel, and a number of hymn lyrics and a few tunes. He co-edited “Songs of the soul” (1885). John Perry

John Howard Payne

1791 - 1852 Hymnal Number: 305 Author of "Home, Sweet Home" in International Praise Payne, John Howard. (New York, N.Y., April 1, 1791--April 1, 1852, Tunis). American actor, playwright, and diplomat. After a successful career in America, London, and Paris he was appointed American consul in Tunis in 1841. Nathaniel D. Gould

1781 - 1864 Hymnal Number: 195 Composer of "WOODLAND" in International Praise Nathaniel Duren Gould 1781-1864. Born in Bedford, MA, into the Duren family, He was musically inclined and attended a singing school when young. He was also a master and teacher of penmanship and engraving. As a conservative music reformer he opened a singing school in 1799. He taught mostly Psalmody singing. He married Sally Andrews Prichard in 1801, and they had eight children: Nathaniel, Augustus, Charles, Mary Ann, (2 unnamed infants that died), Elizabeth and Sarah. He also formed the New Ipswitch military band in 1804 He was conductor of the Middlesex MA Musical Society in 1805. He took the name Gould in 1806 to qualify for an inheritance from an uncle. He taught music in NH and MA in some 115 singing schools over 50+ years and had more than 50,000 students. He also compiled and published music. He authored a number of books, one being “History of church music in America” (1853) about early singing schools. He noted traits and temperaments of many singers, some not really performing for the glory of God. He died in Boston, MA. John Perry

Born at West Cowes, Isle of Wight, UK, he emigrated to the US when young and attended school in Canada. He was ordained a Methodist minister in Oshawa, ON, in 1868. Over the next decade he pastored at churches in Canada, NY, and WI. He switched to the Congregationalist denomination in 1878, serving churches in Mondovi, Shullsburg, and Hixton, WI, and Grand Rapids, MI. From 1882 -1901 he held pastorates at Ames, Webster City, Parkersburg, Peterson, and Tripoli, IA.. He died in Chicago, IL. John Perry
