H. N. Lincoln
1859 - 1948 Hymnal Number: 44 Composer of "[In the shadow of the rock let me rest]" in The Crowning Day Horace Neely Lincoln, 1859-1948. Horace was the son of James Lincoln and Emaline King, and husband of Etta Lee Thurmand (married 1887).
He moved with his family to Texas when he was seven years old. At age 10, he began attending a singing school conducted by James M. Jolley of Mississippi. In 1880, he taught his first singing class in his old neighborhood school house. Later that year, he attended his first normal music school, taught at Mountain Home (now Holland), Texas.
Lincoln had other musical training under L. B. Shook (a former student of Philip Bliss) and John McPherson of Illinois. In 1898, he graduated from the Chicago National College of Music, and in 1906 took a post-graduate course under Horatio Palmer.
Lincoln eventually became president of the Songland Music Company, and the World’s Normal Musical College.

Evangelical. Licensed 1869, pastor Trinity Church, York Penn., in 1873-1874; editor of The Messenger in 1870s and 1880s; taught Bible in Mt. Hermon school, Northfield, Massachusetts. Was associated with D.L. Moody. Went with the United Evangelical CHurch in the schism, was editor of its Evangel 1894-1902. Editor of and hymn-contributor to Evangelischer Gesangbuch and Hymn Book of the United Evangelical Church. Bishop of that denomination 1902-1910. Most famous hymn was "Go and seek the lost and dying."

Person Name: Ernest Geo. Wesley Hymnal Number: 90 Author of "Sheltered in the Rock of Ages" in The Crowning Day Ernest G. W. Wesley was born and educated in England. At the age of seventeen he started writing for local newspapers. When he was twenty-two he worked as special correspondent for The New York Times in Buenos Aries. While he was in Buenos Aries he became licensed to preach in the Methodist Episcopal Church. He came to the United States in the early 1870's and continued writing and contributing to religious and secular papers. He wrote between five and six hundred hymns and nearly two thousand articles on religious and theological topics.

1859 - 1929 Person Name: Adaline H. Berry Hymnal Number: 59 Author of "Sowing Time" in The Crowning Day Adaline H. Beery was born on December 20, 1859 in Hanover, Pennsylvania. Adaline’s family moved to Iowa when she was 10 years old. She attended Mount Morris College Academy, Mount Morris, Illinois and for while taught in Iowa public schools. Adaline wrote hundreds of poems, many of which appeared in Brethren periodicals and in the 1897 Poems of a Decade. She died on February 24, 1929, Kane, Illinois.

1852 - 1956 Person Name: Wm. Beery Hymnal Number: 90 Composer of "[Sheltered in the “Rock of Ages”]" in The Crowning Day William Beery was born April 8, 1852, near Bremen OH and he lived for nearly 104 years. He attended Juniata College, where he later taught vocal music. He also conducted music institutes and singing classes. Beery was married in 1888 to Adaline Hohf, who often wrote poems that he set to music. In 1910 they moved to Elgin IL where both were employed by the Brethren Publishing House. His music has also been included in several Brethren hymnals.
