Eternity’s Beggar

Author: Vivian A. Dake Appears in 4 hymnals Scripture: Luke 12:16-21 First Line: A rich man was he, and his acres were broad Refrain First Line: Eternity’s beggar! the call he had heard Lyrics: 1 A rich man was he, and his acres were broad, And his barns he tore down to build more; “But thy soul is required, thou fool,” said his God, “Then to whom shall thy goods be restored?” Refrain: Eternity’s beggar! the call he had heard, But the warning, he turned it away; O sinner! then list to the voice of thy God, And turn to the Lord while you may. 2 He looked all aghast at the sound of that voice, As he gazed on his rich earthly store; But it melted away; he had made a sad choice, He was poverty’s slave ever more. [Refrain] 3 Out, out from his mansion he wandered away, To the depths of eternity’s night, To beg for relief, and to long for the day, Which shall gladden, no never, his sight. [Refrain] Used With Tune: [A rich man was he, and his acres were broad]

Bigger Barns

Author: Carolyn Winfrey Gillette Meter: 7.7.7.7 D Appears in 1 hymnal Scripture: Luke 12:13-21 First Line: "Bigger barns are what I need" Lyrics: “Bigger barns are what I need,” so a rich man said one day. “From my worries I’ll be free when my wealth is stored away.” “Fool!” God said, “Today you’ll die!” Will that wealth mean anything? All life’s blessings really lie in the gifts that wealth can’t bring. “Bigger barns are what we need for our money, gadgets, more!” Lord, we’re tempted to believe having wealth, we’ll be secure! Somewhere children cry for food or to have a doctor’s care. Can our bigger barns be good when poor neighbors know despair? God of love, we long to know what will make us truly blest. Jesus taught us long ago wealth won’t give us peace or rest. You are our security! Safe in you, we serve, O Lord. May we find we’re rich indeed when we’re sharing with the poor. Topics: Jesus Christ Teachings; Justice; Wealth and Possessions Used With Tune: ABERYSTWYTH

See How Great a Flame Aspires

Author: Charles Wesley Meter: 7.7.7.7 D Appears in 109 hymnals Scripture: Luke 12:49 Lyrics: 1 See how great a flame aspires, kindled by a spark of grace. Jesus’ love the nations fires, sets the kingdoms on a blaze. To bring fire on earth he came, kindled in some hearts it is; O that all might catch the flame, all partake the glorious bliss! 2 When he first the work begun, small and feeble was his day; now the Word doth swiftly run, now it wins its widening way; more and more it spreads and grows, ever mighty to prevail; sin’s strongholds it now o’erthrows, shakes the trembling gates of hell. 3 Saints of God, your Savior praise, who the door hath opened wide; he hath given the word of grace, Jesus’ word is glorified; Jesus mighty to redeem, who alone the work hath wrought; worthy is the work of him, him who spake a world from naught. 4 Saw ye not the cloud arise, little as a human hand? Now it spreads along the skies, hangs o’er all the thirsty land. Lo! the promise of a shower drops already from above; but the Lord will shortly pour all the spirit of his love. Author: Violet King Appears in 2 hymnals Scripture: Luke 12:32 First Line: Away from our Father’s kingdom Refrain First Line: Gather them in, oh, gather them in Lyrics: 1 Away from our Father’s kingdom, They have wandered far away, Until the gath’ring shadows Mark the evening of the day. They have heard the Savior’s message, But the whosoever will By them never has been heeded, Yet strive to gather them in. Refrain: Gather them in, oh, gather them in, Tell them the story, the story of old; Of Jesus, their Savior, their Savior and Friend, Who is the Shepherd, the Shepherd of the sheep. 2 Away from our Father’s kingdom, From the path of life divine, In the hopeless night of ruin Where no ray of light can shine. Go tell the wond’rous story Of him who saves from sin; Oh, tell of his love so precious, Implore them to enter in. [Refrain] 3 Away from our Father’s kingdom, Yet his pardon they may know, If they but come to the fountain Where the healing waters flow. They may have that sweet assurance That shall make the heart rejoice, If now they will hear the pleading Of his kind and gentle voice. [Refrain] Used With Tune: [Away from our Father's kingdom]
