I Will Exalt My God and King

Meter: 8.8.8.8 D Appears in 12 hymnals Lyrics: 1 I will exalt my God and King, and I will ever praise your name. I will extol you every day and evermore your praise proclaim. You, LORD, are greatly to be praised; your greatness is beyond all thought. From age to age your people tell the mighty wonders you have wrought. 2 On your most glorious majesty and on your deeds my mind will dwell. Your deeds will fill the world with awe, and all your greatness I will tell. Your matchless goodness and your grace your people will commemorate; and all your truth and righteousness our joyful song will celebrate. 3 The LORD our God is rich in grace, tender to us, compassionate. His anger is most slow to rise; his love and kindness are most great. The LORD is good in all his ways; his creatures know his constant care. To all his works his love extends; all creatures in his mercies share. 4 All you have made will praise you, LORD; your mighty acts your saints will show, till all the peoples on the earth the splendor of your kingdom know. Eternal is your kingdom, LORD, forever strong and ever sure; while generations rise and die, your glorious reign will still endure. 5 The LORD is faithful to his word; he will extend his gracious hand. The LORD upholds the faltering feet and makes the weak securely stand. The eyes of all look up to you for food and drink, which you supply; your open hand is bountiful, and every need you satisfy. 6 The LORD is just in all his ways; in all his works the LORD is kind, and all who call on him in truth in him a present helper find. He will fulfill the heart's desire of those who fear him and obey. The LORD will surely hear their cry, will save them when to him they pray. 7 The LORD in grace preserves his saints, redeeming those who love his name. The wicked he will overthrow and put his enemies to shame. My mouth will sing the glorious praise of God, whom earth and heaven adore. Let every creature praise his name forever and forevermore! O Love of God, How Strong and True

Author: Horatius Bonar Meter: 8.8.8.8 D Appears in 110 hymnals Lyrics: 1 O love of God, how strong and true! eternal and yet ever new, uncomprehended and unbought, beyond all knowledge and all thought! O love of God, how deep and great, far deeper than man's deepest hate; self-fed, self-kindled like the light, changeless, eternal, infinite. 2 O heav'nly love, how precious still, in days of weariness and ill, in nights of pain and helplessness, to heal, to comfort, and to bless! O wide-embracing, wondrous love! We read you in the sky above, we read you in the earth below, in seas that swell, and streams that flow. 3 We read you best in him who came to bear for us the cross of shame; sent by the Father from on high, our life to live, our death to die. We read your pow'r to bless and save, e'en in the darkness of the grave; still more in resurrection light we read the fulness of your might. 4 O love of God, our shield and stay through all the perils of our way! Eternal love, in you we rest, forever safe, forever blest. We will exalt you, God and King, and we will ever praise your name; we will extol you ev'ry day, and evermore your praise proclaim. All Praise to Thee, My God, This Night

Author: Thomas Ken, 1637-1711 Meter: 8.8.8.8 D Appears in 1,048 hymnals Lyrics: 1 All praise to thee, my God, this night For all the blessings of the light. Keep me, oh, keep me, King of kings, Beneath thine own almighty wings. Forgive me, Lord, for thy dear Son The ill that I this day have done, That with the world, myself, and thee I, ere I sleep, at peace may be. 2 Teach me to live that I may dread The grave as little as my bed. Teach me to die so that I may Rise glorious at the awe-full day. Oh, may my soul on thee repose And may sweet sleep mine eyelids close, Sleep that shall me more vig'rous make To serve my God when I awake. 3 When in the night I sleepless lie, My soul with heav'nly thoughts supply; Let no ill dreams disturb my rest, No pow'rs of darkness me distress. Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise him, all creatures here below; Praise him above, ye heav'nly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. I'm pressing on the upward way, New height I'm gaining ev'ry day; Still praying as I onward bound, "Lord, plant my feet on higher ground." Refrain: Lord, lift me up and let me stand, By faith, on heaven's table-land, A higher plane than I have found; Lord, plant my feet on higher ground. 2. My heart has no desire to stay Where doubts arise and fears dismay; Though some may dwell where these abound, My prayer, my aim is higher ground. [Refrain] 3. I want to live above the world, Though Satan's darts at me are hurled; For faith has caught the joyful sound, The song of saints on higher ground. [Refrain] 4. Exalt the Lord, His Praise Proclaim

The Lord is good, his praise proclaim; since it is pleasant, praise his name; his people for his own he takes and his peculiar treasure makes. 2 I know the Lord is high in state, above all gods our Lord is great; the Lord performs what he decrees, in heav'n and earth, in depths and seas. He makes the vapors to ascend in clouds from earth's remotest end; the lightnings flash at his command; he holds the tempest in his hand. 3 Exalt the Lord, his praise proclaim; all ye his servants, praise his name, who in the Lord's house ever stand and humbly serve at his command. Forever praise and bless his name, and in the church his praise proclaim; in Zion is his dwelling place; praise ye the Lord, show forth his grace. O God of God, O Light of Light

Author: J. Julian, 1839-1913 Meter: 8.8.8.8 D Appears in 50 hymnals Lyrics: 1 O God of God, O Light of Light, Thou Prince of Peace, Thou King of kings! To Thee where angels know no night The song of praise forever rings. To Him who sits upon the throne, The Lamb once slain for sinful men, Be honor, might, all by Him won, Glory and praise! Amen, Amen. 2 Deep in the prophets' sacred page, Grand in the poets' winged word, Slowly, in type, from age to age, Nations beheld their coming Lord, Till through the deep Judean night Rang out the song "Good will to men!" Hymned by the first-born sons of light, Reechoed now, "Good will!" Amen. 3 That life of truth, those deeds of love, That death of pain, mid hate and scorn-- These all are past, and now above He reigns, our King, once crowned with thorn. Lift up your heads, ye heav'nly gates! So sang His hosts, unheard by men, Lift up your heads, for you He waits. We lift them up. Amen, Amen. 4 Nations afar, in ign'rance deep, Isles of the sea, where darkness lay, These hear His voice, they wake from sleep, And throng with joy the upward way. They cry with us, "Send forth Thy light, O Lamb, once slain for sinful men! Burst Satan's bonds, O God of might; Set all men free!" Amen, Amen. 5 Sing to the Lord a glorious song; Sing to His name, His love forthtell! Sing on, heav'n's host, His praise prolong; Sing, ye who now on earth do dwell! Worthy the Lamb for sinners slain! From angels praise and thanks from men! Worthy the Lamb, enthroned to reign, Glory and pow'r! Amen, Amen. How Pleasant

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.8.8.8 D Appears in 351 hymnals First Line: How pleasant and divinely fair Lyrics: 1 How pleasant, how divinely fair, O LORD of hosts, your dwellings are! With long desire my spirit faints to see the shining hosts of saints. My flesh would rest in you abode; my weary heart cries out for God: "My God! My King! Why should I stay far from the joys of endless day?" 2 The sparrow has a place to rest, and for her young provides a nest, but will my God to them alone pour out his mercy from the throne? Blest are the saints who dwell on high around your throne, above the sky; their brightest glories shine above, and all their work is praise and love. 3 Great God, attend, while Zion sings the joy that from your presence springs; to spend a day within your courts exceeds a thousand days apart. You are our sun, you bless our day; and you our shield, to guard our way from all assaults of hell and sin, from foes without and fears within. 4 All needed grace you will bestow, and crown that grace with glory too; you give all things, and you withhold no heav'nly good from upright souls. O God our King, whose sov'reign sway the glorious hosts of heav'n obey, display your grace, exert your pow'r, till all on earth your name adore. His love in me is made complete; I dwell in love, in God alone, And share the bliss of heaven’s throne. 2 Our God is love, oh, praise His name! I feel His love a burning flame; How sweet to know He sets me free, And perfects that concerning me! [Refrain] 3 Our God is love, oh, could I tell The love that saved my soul from hell! O Jesus, break the heart of stone, And let Thy mighty love be known. [Refrain] 4 Our God is love that thought so dear, Now sweeps away each doubt and fear; I sweetly rest this soul of mine Deep in the heart of love divine. Died He for me, who caused His pain? For me, who Him to death pursued? Amazing love! how can it be That Thou, my God, should die for me? Refrain: Amazing love! how can it be That Thou, my God, shouldst die for me. 2 'Tis mystery all! Th'Immortal dies! Who can explore His strange design? In vain the firstborn seraph tries To sound the depths of love divine! 'Tis mercy all! let earth adore, Let angel minds inquire no more. (Refrain) 3 He left His Father's throne above, So free, so infinite His grace; Emptied Himself of all but love, And bled for Adam's helpless race; 'Tis mercy all, immense and free; For, O my God, it found out me. (Refrain) 4 Long my imprisoned spirit lay Fast bound in sin and nature's night; Thine eye diffused a quick'ning ray, I woke, the dungeon flamed with light; My chains fell off, my heart was free; I rose, went forth and followed Thee. Author: C. Wordsworth Meter: 8.8.8.8 D Appears in 7 hymnals Lyrics: 1 O God, in Whose all-searching eye Thy servants stand, to ratify The vow baptismal, by them made, When first Thy hand was on them laid; Bless them, O Holy Father, bless, Who Thee, with heart and voice confess; May they, acknowledged as Thine own, Stand evermore before Thy throne. 2 O Christ, Who didst at Pentecost Send down from heaven the Holy Ghost; And at Samaria baptize Those whom Thou didst evangelize; And then on Thy baptized confer The best of gifts, the Comforter, By apostolic hands, and prayer; Be with us now, as Thou wert there. 3 Arm these Thy soldiers, mighty Lord, With shield of faith, and Spirit's sword; Forth to the battle may they go, And boldly fight against the foe, With banner of the cross unfurled, And by it overcome the world; And so at last receive from Thee The palm and crown of victory. 4 Come, ever blessèd Spirit, come, And make Thy servant's hearts Thy home; Thus consecrated, Lord, to Thee, May each a living temple be. Enrich that temple's holy shrine With sevenfold gifts of grace divine; With wisdom, light, and knowledge, bless, Strength, counsel, fear, and godliness. Amen. O glorious song! O blessed story! It floats along from realms of glory, Each Christmas day it comes again,— “On earth be peace! goodwill to men!” 2 A wondrous star was sent to shine, And show the world the Babe divine; And from the East the wise men came, With royal honors to His name. O guiding star, so brightly beaming! From ages far thy radiance streaming, Still draws the nations to His feet The Babe of Bethlehem to greet! 3 ‘Twas Love that brought Him here to earth, ‘Twas Love that plann’d His humble birth, ‘Tis Love that draws us to Him now, And bids us at His feet to bow. O holy Love! in fullest measure, We bring to Thee our richest treasure, To grace Thy glowing diadem, O blessed Babe of Bethlehem! Topics: Christmas Used With Tune: KENT

O God, You Gave Your Servant John

Author: Joy F. Patterson Meter: 8.8.8.8 D Appears in 1 hymnal Lyrics: 1 O Lord, you gave your servant John a vision of the world to come: a radiant city filled with light, where you with us will make your home; where neither grief nor pain shall dwell, since former things have passed away, and where they need no sun nor moon; your glory lights eternal day. 2 Our cities wear great shrouds of pain; beneath our gleaming towers of wealth the homeless crouch in rain and snow, the poor cry out for strength and health. Youth’s hope is dimmed by ignorance; unwilling, workers idled stand; indifference walks unheeding by as hunger stretches out its hand. 3 Come, Lord, make real John’s vision fair; come, dwell with us, make all things new; we try in vain to save our world unless our help shall come from you.
