Psalm 139 Part 1

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 251 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 139 First Line: In all my vast concerns with thee Lyrics: In all my vast concerns with thee, In vain my soul would try To shun thy presence, Lord, or flee The notice of thine eye. Thy all-surrounding sight surveys My rising and my rest, My public walks, my private ways, And secrets of my breast. My thoughts lie open to the Lord Before they're formed within; And ere my lips pronounce the word He knows the sense I mean. O wondrous knowledge, deep and high! Where can a creature hide? Within thy circling arms I lie, Beset on every side. So let thy grace surround me still, And like a bulwark prove, To guard my soul from every ill, Secured by sovereign love. Lord, where shall guilty souls retire, Forgotten and unknown? In hell they meet thy dreadful fire, In heav'n thy glorious throne. Should I suppress my vital breath To 'scape the wrath divine, Thy voice would break the bars of death, And make the grave resign. If winged with beams of morning light I fly beyond the west, Thy hand, which must support my flight, Would soon betray my rest. If o'er my sins I think to draw The curtains of the night, Those flaming eyes that guard thy law Would turn the shades to light. The beams of noon, the midnight hour, Are both alike to thee O may I ne'er provoke that power From which I cannot flee. Topics: Evening psalm; Evidences of sincerity; Obedience sincere; Sincerity; Examination or evidences of grace; Grace its evidences, or self-examination; Self-examination or evidences of grace; Trial of our hearts; Daily Devotion; Midnight thoughts; God his wisdom in his works; Holiness professed; Professions of sincerity and repentance, etc; All-seeing God; Appeal to God concerning our sincerity; God All-seeing; God heart-searching; Heart known to God; Infants; Man wonderful formation; Mercies innumerable; Nature of man

Psalm 139 Part 1

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 325 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 139 First Line: Lord, thou hast searched and seen me through Lyrics: Lord, thou hast searched and seen me through, Thine eye commands with piercing view My rising and my resting hours, My heart and flesh with all their powers. My thoughts, before they are my own, Are to my God distinctly known; He knows the words I mean to speak Ere from my op'ning lips they break. Within thy circling power I stand; On every side I find thy hand; Awake, asleep, at home, abroad, I am surrounded still with God. Amazing knowledge, vast and great! What large extent! what lofty height! My soul, with all the powers I boast, Is in the boundless prospect lost. O may these thoughts possess my breast, Where'er I rove, where'er I rest! Nor let my weaker passions dare Consent to sin, for God is there. Could I so false, so faithless prove, To quit thy service and thy love, Where, Lord, could I thy presence shun. Or from thy dreadful glory run? If up to heav'n I take my flight, 'Tis there thou dwell'st enthroned in light Or dive to hell, there vengeance reigns, And Satan groans beneath thy chains. If, mounted on a morning ray, I fly beyond the western sea, Thy swifter hand would first arrive, And there arrest thy fugitive. Or should I try to shun thy sight Beneath the spreading veil of night, One glance of thine, one piercing ray, Would kindle darkness into day. O may these thoughts possess my breast, Where'er I rove, where'er I rest! Nor let my weaker passions dare Consent to sin, for God is there. The veil of night is no disguise, No screen from thy all-searching eyes; Thy hand can seize thy foes as soon Through midnight shades as blazing noon. Midnight and noon in this agree, Great God, they're both alike to thee; Not death can hide what God will spy, And hell lies naked to his eye. O may these thoughts possess my breast, Where'er I rove, where'er I rest! Nor let my weaker passions dare Consent to sin, for God is there.

Thou Lord, by strictest Search hast known

Appears in 86 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 139 Lyrics: 1 Thou, Lord, by strictest Search hast known 2 My rising up and lying down; My secret Thoughts are known to thee, Known long before conceiv'd by me. 3 Thine Eye my Bed and Path surveys, My publick Haunts and private Ways; 4 Thou know'st what 'tis my Lips would vent, My yet unutter'd words intent. 5 Surrounded by thy Pow'r I stand, On ev'ry Side I find thy Hand. 6 O Skill, for human Reach too high! Too dazzling bright for mortal Eye! 7 O could I so perfidious be, To think of once deserting thee, Where, Lord, could I thy Influence shun? Or whither from thy Presence run? 8 If up to Heav'n I take my Flight, 'Tis there thou dwell'st enthron'd in Light, Or sink to Hell's infernal Plains, 'Tis there Almighty Vengeance reigns. 9 If I the Morning's Wings could gain, And fly beyond the Western Main, 10 Thy swifter Hand would first arrive, And there arrest thy Fugitive. 11 Or should I try to shun thy Sight Beneath the sable Wings of Night; One Glance from thee, one piercing Ray Would kindle Darkness into Day. 12 The Veil of Night is no Disguise, No Screen from thy all-searching Eyes: Thro' Midnight Shades thou find'st thy Way, As in the blazing Noon of Day. 13 Thou know'st the Texture of my Heart, My Reins and ev'ry vital part; Each single Thread, in Nature's Loom, By thee was cover'd in the Womb. 14 I'll praise Thee from whose Hands I came, A work of such a curious Frame; The Wonders thou in me hast shown, My soul with grateful Joy must own. 15 Thine Eyes my Substance did survey, while yet a lifeless Mass it lay, In secret how exactly wrought, E'er from its dark Inclosure brought. 16 Thou didst the shapeless Embrio see, Its Parts were registred by Thee: Thou saw'st the daily Growth they took, Form'd by the Model of thy Book. 17 Let me acknowledge too, O God, That since this Maze of Life I trod, Thy Thoughts of Love to me surmount The Pow'r of Numbers to recount. 18 Far sooner could I reckon o'er The Sands upon the Ocean's Shore: Each Morn revising what I've done, I find th' Account but new begun. 19 The Wicked thou shalt slay, O God: Depart from me, ye Men of Blood, 20 Whose Tongues Heav'n's Majesty profane, And take th' Almighty's Name in vain. 21 Lord, hate not I their impious Crew, Who thee with Enmity pursue? And does not Grief my Heart oppress, When Reprobates thy Law transgress? 22 Who practise Enmity to Thee, Shall utmost Hatred have from me; Such Men I utterly detest, As if they were my Foes profest. 23,24 Search, try, O God, my Thoughts and Heart, If Mischief lurks in any Part; Correct me where I go astray, And guide me in thy perfect Way.

Thy hand my heart and reins possessed Where unborn nature grew; Thy wisdom all my features traced, And all my members drew. Thine eye with nicest care surveyed The growth of every part; Till the whole scheme thy thoughts had laid Was copied by thy art. Psalm 139 Part 2

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 35 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 139 First Line: 'Twas from thy hand, my God, I came Lyrics: 'Twas from thy hand, my God, I came, A work of such a curious frame In me thy fearful wonders shine, And each proclaims thy skill divine. Thine eyes did all my limbs survey, Which yet in dark confusion lay; Thou saw'st the daily growth they took, Formed by the model of thy book. By thee my growing parts were named, And what thy sovereign counsels framed- The breathing lungs, the beating heart- Was copied with unerring art. At last, to show my Maker's name, God stamped his image on my frame, And in some unknown moment joined The finished members to the mind. There the young seeds of thought began, And all the passions of the man: Great God, our infant nature pays Immortal tribute to thy praise. Lord, since in my advancing age I've acted on life's busy stage, Thy thoughts of love to me surmount The power of numbers to recount. I could survey the ocean o'er, And count each sand that makes the shore, Before my swiftest thoughts could trace The num'rous wonders of thy grace. These on my heart are still impressed, With these I give my eyes to rest; And at my waking hour I find God and his love possess my mind. Oh, for a Closer Walk with God

Author: William Cowper Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 1,370 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 139:23-24 Lyrics: 1 Oh, for a closer walk with God, a calm and heavenly frame, a light to shine upon the road that leads me to the Lamb! 2 Where is the blessedness I knew when first I sought the Lord? Where is the soul-refreshing view of Jesus and his Word? 3 What peaceful hours I once enjoyed! How sweet their memory still! But they have left an aching void the world can never fill. 4 The dearest idol I have known, whate'er that idol be, help me to tear it from thy throne and worship only thee. 5 So shall my walk be close with God, calm and serene my frame; so purer light shall mark the road that leads me to the Lamb. Hymn 136

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 156 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 139:23-24 First Line: God is a Spirit, just and wise Lyrics: God is a Spirit, just and wise, He sees our inmost mind; In vain to beav'n we raise our cries, And leave our souls behind. Nothing but truth before his throne With honor can appear; The painted hypocrites are known Through the disguise they wear. Their lifted eyes salute the skies, Their bending knees the ground; But God abhors the sacrifice, Where not the heart is found. Lord, search my thoughts, and try my ways, And make my soul sincere Then shall I stand before thy face, And find acceptance there.

The Omnipresence and Omniscience of God

Author: Blacklock Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 29 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 139 First Line: Lord, thou with an unerring beam Lyrics: 1 Lord, thou with an unerring beam Surveyest all my powers; My rising steps are watch'd by thee, By thee, my resting hours. 2 My thoughts, scarce struggling in to birth Great God, are known to thee: Abroad, at home, still I'm inclos'd With thine immensity. 3 To thee the labyrinths of life In open view appear; Nor steals a whisper from my lips Without thy listening ear. 4 Behind I glance, and thou art there; Before me shines thy name; And 'tis thy strong almighty hand Sustains my tender frame. 5 Such knowledge mocks the vain essays Of my astonish'd mind; Nor can my reason's soaring eye Its towering summit find. Pause. 6 Where from thy spirit shall I stretch The pinions of my flight? Or where, thro' nature's spacious range, Shall I elude thy sight? 7 Scal'd I the skies; the blaze divine Would overwhelm my soul: Plung'd I to hell; there should I hear Thine awful thunders roll. 8 If on a morning's darting ray With matchless speed I rode, And flew to the wild lonely shore, That bounds the ocean's flood; 9 Thither thine hand, all-present God, Must guide the wondrous way, And thine omnipotence support The fabric of my clay. 10 Should I involve myself around With clouds of tenfold night, The clouds would shine like blazing noon Before thy piercing sight. 11 "The beams of noon, the midnight hour "Are both alike to thee: "O may I ne'er provoke that power, "From which I cannot flee!" Psalm 139: O Lord, thou hast me search'd and known

Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 19 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 139 First Line: O Lord, thou hast me search'd and known Lyrics: 1O Lord, thou hast me search’d and known. 2Thou know’st my sitting down, And rising up; yea, all my thoughts afar to thee are known. 3My footsteps, and my lying down, thou compassest always; Thou also most entirely art acquaint with all my ways. 4For in my tongue, before I speak, not any word can be, But altogether, lo, O Lord, it is well known to thee. 5Behind, before, thou hast beset, and laid on me thine hand. 6Such knowledge is too strange for me, too high to understand. 7From thy Sp’rit whither shall I go? or from thy presence fly? 8Ascend I heav’n, lo, thou art there; there, if in hell I lie. 9Take I the morning wings, and dwell in utmost parts of sea; 10Ev’n there, Lord, shall thy hand me lead, thy right hand hold shall me. 11If I do say that darkness shall me cover from thy sight, Then surely shall the very night about me be as light. 12Yea, darkness hideth not from thee, but night doth shine as day: To thee the darkness and the light are both alike alway. 13For thou possessed hast my reins, and thou hast cover’d me, When I within my mother’s womb inclosed was by thee. 14Thee will I praise; for fearfully and strangely made I am; Thy works are marv’llous, and right well my soul doth know the same. 15My substance was not hid from thee, when as in secret I Was made; and in earth’s lowest parts was wrought most curiously. 16Thine eyes my substance did behold, yet being unperfect; And in the volume of thy book my members all were writ; Which after in continuance were fashion’d ev’ry one, When as they yet all shapeless were, and of them there was none. 17How precious also are thy thoughts, O gracious God, to me! And in their sum how passing great and numberless they be! 18If I should count them, than the sand they more in number be: What time soever I awake, I ever am with thee. 19Thou, Lord, wilt sure the wicked slay: hence from me bloody men. 20Thy foes against thee loudly speak, and take thy name in vain. 21Do not I hate all those, O Lord, that hatred bear to thee? With those that up against thee rise can I but grieved be? 22With perfect hatred them I hate, my foes I them do hold. 23Search me, O God, and know my heart, try me, my thoughts unfold: 24And see if any wicked way there be at all in me; And in thine everlasting way to me a leader be.

8 Was für Erkenntnisse, Für köstliche Gedanken! To the chief Musicain, A Psalm of David

Appears in 3 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 139 First Line: O Lord, thou dost me search and know Lyrics: 1 O Lord, thou dost me search and know, Thou know'st my sitting down, 2 My rising up, my thought also To thee far off is known. 3 Thou fann'st my path and lying down, And all my ways kmow'st well. 4 For !o each word that's in my tongue, Lord, thou can'st fully tell. 5 Behind thou gird'st me, and before, On me dost lay thine hand 6 Such high and wond'rous skill is more Than I can comprehend. 7 Where shall I from thy spirit go? Or from thy face where fiy? 8 If heav'n I climb thou there? lo thou If down in hell I lie. 9 If morning wings I take, and dwell Where utmost sea-coasts be. 10 Ev'n there thy hand conduct me shall, And thy right hand hold me. 11 Yea darkness sure shall cover me, If that I thus shall say: Then shall the night about me be Like to the lightsome day. 12 Yea darkness darkneth not from thee, But like the day shines night: Alike unto thee both these be, The darkness and the light. [2] 13 For thou my reins possessed hast, And also cover'd me, Within my mother's womb thou hast. 14 My praise shall be of thee; Because that 1 am fashion'd thus In fearful wond'rous wise; And that thy works are marvellous, My soul right well descries. 15 From thee my substance was not hid, When closely made was I; And when that I was fashioned In earth's deeps curiously. 16 Thine eyes did on my substance look, When yet I wanted frame: And all my members in thy book Were written down by name. Which day by day should fashion'd be, When none of them were come. 17 How precious are thy thoughts to me, God! how great's their sum? 18 If I of them account should take, More than the sands they be. And still when that I do awake, I present am with thee. [3] 19 O God, thou surely wilt them slay That wicked persons be; Depart therefore from hence away, Ye men of blood, from me. 20 Because that they against thee do Speak in mischievous wise. Thy name in vain they take also, Who are thine enemies. 21 Jehovah, hate I not the men That thee do hate? likewise Am I not sore aggriev'd with them That up against thee rise? 22 With perfect hate them hate do I, I take them for my foes. 23 Search me, O God, my heart descry, Try me, my thoughts disclose. 24 Behold in me if fhat there be Ev'n any wicked way; And in the way conduct thou me That doth endure for aye.

Author: Steele Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 132 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 139 First Line: Almighty father, gracious Lord Lyrics: 1 Almighty father, gracious Lord, Kind guardian of my days, Thy mercies let my heart record In songs of grateful praise. 2 In life's first dawn, my tender frame Was thy indulgent care, Long ere I could pronounce thy name, Or breathe the infant prayer. 3 [Around my path what dangers rose! What snares spread all my road! No power could guard me from my foes, But my preserver, God. 4 How many blessings round me shone, Where'er I turn'd my eye! How many past almost unknown, Or unregarded, by!] 5 Each rolling year new favors brought From thy exhaustless store: But ah! in vain my laboring thought Would count thy mercies o'er. 6 While sweet reflection thro' my days Thy bounteous hand would trace: Still dearer blessings claim thy praise, The blessings of thy grace. 7 Yes, I adore thee, gracious Lord, For favors more divine: That I have known thy sacred word, Where all thy glories shine. 8 Lord, when this mortal frame decays, And every weakness dies, Complete the wonders of thy grace, And raise me to the skies. 9 Then shall my joyful powers unite In more exalted lays, And Join the happy sons of light In everlasting praise. Lord, all I am is known to Thee!

Author: Watts Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 127 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 139 Lyrics: 1 Lord, all I am is known to Thee! In vain my soul would try To shun Thy presence, or to flee The notice of Thine eye. 2 Thy all-surrounding sight surveys My rising and my rest, My public walks, my private ways, And secrets of my breast. 3 My thoughts lie open to the Lord, Before they’re formed within; And ere my lips pronounce the word, He knows the sense I mean. 4 O wondrous knowledge, deep and high! Where can a creature hide? Within Thy circling arms I lie, Beset on every side. 5 So let Thy grace surround me still, And like a bulwark prove, To guard my soul from every ill, Secured by sovereign love.
