Psalm 50 Part 1

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 102 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 50:1-6 First Line: The Lord, the Judge, before his throne Lyrics: The Lord, the Judge, before his throne Bids the whole earth draw nigh, The nations near the rising sun, And near the western sky. No more shall bold blasphemers say, "Judgment will ne'er begin;" No more abuse his long delay To impudence and sin. Throned on a cloud our God shall come, Bright flames prepare his way; Thunder and darkness, fire and storm, Lead on the dreadful day. Heav'n from above his call shall hear, Attending angels come, And earth and hell shall know and fear His justice and their doom. "But gather all my saints," he cries, "That made their peace with God By the Redeemer's sacrifice, And sealed it with his blood. "Their faith and works, brought forth to light Shall make the world confess, My sentence of reward is right, And heav'n adore my grace." Topics: Judgment day; Sinner and saint's portion; God the judge; Hypocrites and hypocrisy; Sins of tongue; Formal worship; Obedience better than sacrifice; Professions false; Saints rewarded at last

Psalm 50 Part 3

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 51 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 50 First Line: The Lord, the Judge, his churches warns Lyrics: The Lord, the Judge, his churches warns, Let hypocrites attend and fear, Who place their hope in rites and forms, But make not faith nor love their care. Vile wretches dare rehearse his name With lips of falsehood and deceit; A friend or brother they defame, And soothe and flatter those they hate. They watch to do their neighbors wrong, Yet dare to seek their Maker's face; They take his cov'nant on their tongue, But break his laws, abuse his grace. To heav'n they lift their hands unclean, Defiled with lust, defiled with blood; By night they practise every sin, By day their mouths draw near to God. And while his judgments long delay, They grow secure and sin the more; They think he sleeps as well as they, And put far off the dreadful hour. O dreadful hour! when God draws near And sets their crimes before their eyes! His wrath their guilty souls shall tear, And no deliv'rer dare to rise. Topics: Judgment day; Sinner and saint's portion; God the judge; Hypocrites and hypocrisy; Sins of tongue; Formal worship; Obedience better than sacrifice; Professions false; Saints rewarded at last

Psalm 50

Author: Isaac Watts Appears in 70 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 50 First Line: The God of glory sends his summons forth Lyrics: The God of glory sends his summons forth, Calls the south nations and awakes the north; From east to west the sovereign orders spread, Through distant worlds and regions of the dead: The trumpet sounds; hell trembles; heav'n rejoices Lift up your heads, ye saints, with cheerful voices. No more shall atheists mock his long delay; His vengeance sleeps no more; behold the day: Behold, the Judge descends; his guards are nigh; Tempests and fire attend him down the sky. When God appears, all nature shall adore him; While sinners tremble, saints rejoice before him. "Heav'n, earth, and hell, draw near; let all things come To hear my justice, and the sinner's doom; But gather first my saints," the Judge commands, "Bring them, ye angels, from their distant lands." When Christ returns, wake every cheerful passion And shout, ye saints; he comes for your salvation. "Behold, my cov'nant stands for ever good, Sealed by th' eternal Sacrifice in blood, And signed with all their names; the Greek, the Jew, That paid the ancient worship or the new." There's no distinction here; join all your voices, And raise your heads, ye saints, for heav'n rejoices. "Here," saith the Lord, "ye angels, spread their thrones And near me seat my fav'rites and my sons: Come, my redeemed, possess the joys prepared Ere time began; 'tis your divine reward." When Christ returns, wake every cheerful passion; And shout, ye saints; he comes for your salvation "I am the Savior, I th' Almighty God, I am the Judge: ye heav'ns, proclaim abroad My just eternal sentence, and declare Those awful truths that sinners dread to hear." When God appears, all nature shall adore him; While sinners tremble, saints rejoice before him. "Stand forth, thou bold blasphemer, and profane, Now feel my wrath, nor call my threat'nings vain: Thou hypocrite, once dressed in saints' attire, I doom the painted hypocrite to fire." Judgment proceeds; hell trembles; heav'n rejoices; Lift up your heads, ye saints, with cheerful voices. "Not for the want of goats or bullocks slain Do I condemn thee; bulls and goats are vain Without the flame of love; in vain the store Of brutal off'rings, that were mine before." Earth is the Lord's, all nature shall adore him; While sinners tremble, saints rejoice before him. "If I were hungry, would I ask thee food? When did I thirst, or drink thy bullocks' blood? Mine are the tamer beasts and savage breed, Flocks, herds, and fields and forests where they feed." All is the Lord's, he rules the wide creation; Gives sinners vengeance, and the saints salvation. "Can I be flatter'd with thy cringing bows, Thy solemn chatt'rings and fantastic vows? Are my eyes charmed thy vestments to behold, Glaring in gems, and gay in woven gold?" God is the Judge of hearts, no fair disguises Can screen the guilty when his vengeance rises. "Unthinking wretch! how couldst thou hope to please A God, a Spirit, with such toys as these, While, with my grace and statutes on thy tongue, Thou lov'st deceit, and dost thy brother wrong?" Judgment proceeds; hell trembles; heav'n rejoices; Lift up your heads, ye saints, with cheerful voices. "In vain to pious forms thy zeal pretends; Thieves and adulterers are thy chosen friends; While the false flatt'rer at my altar waits, His hardened soul divine instruction hates." God is the Judge of hearts, no fair disguises Can screen the guilty when his vengeance rises. "Silent I waited with long-suff'ring love; But didst thou hope that I should ne'er reprove? And cherish such an impious thought within, That the All-Holy would indulge thy sin?" See, God appears; all nature joins t' adore him; Judgment proceeds, and sinners fall before him. "Behold my terrors now; my thunders roll, And thy own crimes affright thy guilty soul; Now like a lion shall my vengeance tear Thy bleeding heart, and no deliv'rer near." Judgment concludes; hell trembles; heav'n rejoices; Lift up your heads, ye saints, with cheerful voices. Sinners, awake betimes; ye fools, be wise; Awake before this dreadful morning rise; Change your vain thoughts, your crooked works amend, Fly to the Savior, make the Judge your friend: Then join the saints, wake every cheerful passion; When Christ returns, he comes for your salvation. Topics: Judgment day; Sinner and saint's portion; God the judge; Hypocrites and hypocrisy; Sins of tongue; Formal worship; Obedience better than sacrifice; Professions false; Saints rewarded at last

Psalm 50: The mighty God, the Lord

Meter: 6.6.8.6 Appears in 30 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 50 First Line: The mighty God, the Lord Lyrics: 1The mighty God, the Lord, hath spoken, and did call The earth, from rising of the sun, to where he hath his fall. 2From out of Sion hill, which of excellency And beauty the perfection is, God shined gloriously. 3Our God shall surely come, keep silence shall not he: Before him fire shall waste, great storms shall round about him be. 4Unto the heavens clear he from above shall call, And to the earth likewise, that he may judge his people all. 5Together let my saints unto me gather’d be, Those that by sacrifice have made a covenant with me. 6And then the heavens shall his righteousness declare: Because the Lord himself is he by whom men judged are. 7My people Isr’el hear, speak will I from on high, Against thee I will testify; God, ev’n thy God, am I. 8I for thy sacrifice no blame will on thee lay, Nor for burnt-off ‘rings, which to me thou offer’dst ev’ry day. 9I’ll take no calf nor goats from house or fold of thine: 10For beasts of forests, cattle all on thousand hills, are mine. 11The fowls on mountains high are all to me well known; Wild beasts which in the fields do lie, ev’n they are all mine own. 12Then, if I hungry were, I would not tell it thee; Because the world, and fulness all thereof, belongs to me. 13Will I eat flesh of bulls? or goats’ blood drink will I? 14Thanks offer thou to God, and pay thy vows to the most High. 15And call upon me when in trouble thou shalt be; I will deliver thee, and thou my name shalt glorify. 16But to the wicked man God saith, My laws and truth Should’st thou declare? how dar’st thou take my cov’nant in thy mouth? 17Sith thou instruction hat’st, which should thy ways direct; And sith my words behind thy back thou cast’st, and dost reject. 18When thou a thief didst see, with him thou didst consent; And with the vile adulterers partaker on thou went. 19Thou giv’st thy mouth to ill, thy tongue deceit doth frame; 20Thou sitt’st, and ‘gainst thy brother speak’st, thy mother’s son dost shame. 21Because I silence kept, while thou these things hast wrought; That I was altogether like thyself, hath been thy thought; Yet I will thee reprove, and set before thine eyes, In order ranked, thy misdeeds and thine iniquities. 22Now, ye that God forget, this carefully consider; Lest I in pieces tear you all, and none can you deliver. 23Whoso doth offer praise me glorifies; and I Will shew him God’s salvation, that orders right his way.

The Lord hath spoke, the mighty God

Appears in 19 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 50 Lyrics: 1 The Lord hath spoke, the mighty God 2 Hath sent his Summons all abroad, From dawning Light, till Day declines: The list'ning Earth his Voice hath heard, And he from Sion hath appear'd, Where Beauty in Perfection shines. 3,4 Our God shall come, and keep no more Misconstru'd Silence, as before; But wasting Flames before Him send; Around shall Tempests fiercely rage, While He does Heav'n and Earth engage His just Tribunal to attend. 5,6 Assemble all my Saints to me (Thus runs the great divine Decree), That in my lasting Cov'nant live; And Off'rings bring with constant Care: (The Heav'n's His Justice shall declare; For God himself shall Sentence give). 7 Attend, my People; Israel, hear; Thy strong Accuser I'll appear; Thy God, thy only God, am I; 8 'Tis not of Off'rings I complain, Which, daily in my Temple slain, My sacred Altar did supply. 9 Will this alone Atonement make? No Bullock from thy Stall I'll take, Nor He-goat from thy Fold accept: 10 The Forest Beasts, that range alone, The Cattle too, are all my own, That on a thousand Hills are kept, 11 I know the Fowls, that build their nests In craggy Rocks; and savage Beasts, That loosely haunt the open Fields: 12 If seiz'd with Hunger I could be, I need not seek Relief from thee, Since the World's mine, and all it yields. 13 Think'st thou that I have any Need On slaughter'd Bulls and Goats to feed, To eat their Flesh, and drink their Blood? 14 The Sacrifices I require, Are Hearts which Love and Zeal inspire, And Vows with strictest Care made good. 15 In Time of Trouble call on me, And I will set thee safe and free; And thou Returns of Praise shalt make. 16 But to the Wicked thus saith God: How dar'st thou teach my Laws abroad, Or in thy Mouth my cov'nant take? 17 For stubborn thou, confirm'd in sin, Hast Proof against Instruction been, And of my word didst lightly speak: 18 When thou a subtle Thief didst see, Thou gladly didst with him agree, And with Adult'rers didst partake. 19 Vile Slander is thy chief Delight; Thy Tongue, by Envy mov'd, and spite, Deceitful Tales does hourly spread. 20 Thou dost with hateful Scandals wound Thy Brother, and with Lyes confound The Offspring of thy Mother's Bed. 21 These Things didst thou, whom still I strove To gain with Silence, and with Love; Till thou didst wickedly surmise, That I was such a one as thou: But I'll reprove and shame thee now, And set thy Sins before thine Eyes. 22 Mark this, ye wicked Fools, lest I Let all my Bolts of Vengeance fly, While none shall dare your Cause to own: 23 Who praises me, due Honour gives; And to the Man that justly lives, My strong Salvation shall be shown.

God the Lord, the king almighty

Author: Christopher Martin Idle (b. 1938) Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Appears in 3 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 50 Lyrics: 1 God the Lord, the King almighty, calls the earth from east to west: shining out from Zion's splendour, city loveliest and best, comes our God! He breaks the silence, robed in burning majesty: 'Gather all my covenant people, bound by sacrifice to me'. 2 'Hear me testify against you: listen, Israel, as I speak: I do not require your offerings, sacrifice I do not seek. Mountain birds and meadow creatures, Cattle on a thousand hills, all the beasts are my possession, moving as their maker wills.' 3 God who owns the whole creation needs no gift, no food, no house: bring to him your hearts' thanksgiving: God most high will hear your vows. Trust him in the day of trouble, call to him who will redeem: God will be your strong deliverer, his renown your daily theme. 4 Lies increase and evil prospers; God is silent, while men say, 'He has gone; let us forget him!' thinking he is false as they. But his word will judge or save us; let us come before his throne giving thanks, receiving mercy: God's salvation now made known. Psalm 50: Let God, Who Called the Worlds to Be

Author: David Mowbray, b. 1938 Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 2 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 50 First Line: Let God, who called the worlds to be Lyrics: 1 Let God, who called the worlds to be, arise in all-consuming fire to judge the people righteously, and faithless ones with awe inspire. 2 This God is ours, and yet we break the covenant made long ago. God’s words we foolishly forsake; God’s ways we have refused to know. 3 For though our lips have preached God’s law, our erring hearts have scorned the name. We choose the thief and slanderer as friends, and so increase our shame. 4 What then shall God the Lord demand? Not gifts or lavish offering, but vows and promises performed, and lives from which true praises spring! Topics: Confession and Assurance Used With Tune: ROCKINGHAM

A Psalm of Asaph

Appears in 2 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 50 First Line: The God of gods, the Lord doth speak Lyrics: 1 The God of GOD's, the LORD doth speak, and to the earth proclaim; Ev'n from the rising of the sun to setting of the same. 2 From out of Zion's sacred hill, which, by his dwelling there, Of beauty the perfection is, GOD shining doth appear. 3 Behold our God in glory comes, nor silent, in the skies; Before Him goes devouring fire, great* storms around him rise. 4 To heav'n He calls out from on high, and to the earth below, That all his equal judgment may on his own people know. 5 Gather to me, says he, my saints, bring them before mine eyes; Who have a covenant confirm'd, with me by sacrifice. 6 And now the heav'ns most clearly shall his righteousness make known; Because the might GOD Himself, is sov'reign judge alone. (Selah) [2 Part] 7 Hear O my people Israel! and I will speak on high; Yea I will testify to thee, that GOD, thy God, am I. 8 For what of sacrifices I will find no fault with thee, Or that burnt off'rings have not been, continually with me. 9 I'll take no bullocks from thy stalls nor goats from folds of thine: 10 For forrest-beasts and cattle on a thousand hills are mine. 11 The fowls that on the mountains fly, are all to me well known; And all wild beasts which range the fields, are with me as my own. 12 If hunger ever could me seize, I would not tell it thee; For the whole world and fulness of the whole belong to me. 13 Or eat the flesh of beeves, or drink the blood of goats shall I? 14 Thanks offer thou to GOD, and pay thy vows to the most high. 15 And in the day of thy distress, confiding, tome cry; And I'll deliver thee, and then thou shalt me glorify. [3 Part] 16 But to the wicked GOD doth say; "how dar'st thou to proclaim My statutes? or with thy vile mouth my covenant to name? 17 Whereas thou hatest discipline, nor wilt instructed be; And all my words, as nothing worth, thou castest off from thee. 18 When thou dost see a thief, with him, thou joinest with thy heart; Yea with unclean adulterers thou a partaker art. 19 Thy mouth to evil thou dost give, thy tongue deceit to frame, 20 Against thy brother sit and speak, thy mother's son defame. 21 These things thou didst: I silent was: and thou didst me surmise: Quite like thy self; I'll thee reprove, and rank them in thine eyes. 22 O now consider this all ye who God forgotten have; Lest I should you in pieces tare, and there be none to save. 23 But he whose sacrifice is praise, great glory yields to me; And he who orders right his way shall GOD's salvation see.

Deus Deorum

Author: W. W. Appears in 2 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 50 First Line: The mighty God Lyrics: 1 The mighty God, th'Eternal hath thus spoke, And all the world he will call and provoke. E'en from the East, and so forth to the West. 2 From toward Sion, which place he liketh best: God will appeare in beauty most excellent Our God will come before long time be spent. 3 Devouring fire shall go before his face: A great tempest shall round about him trace. 4 Then shall he call the earth and heavens bright, To judge his folk with equity and right. 5 Saying to to, and now my saints assemble: My pact they keep, their gifts do not dissemble. 6 The heavens shall declare his righteousnesse, For God is Judge of all things more and lesse, 7 Heare my people, for I will now reveale: List Israel, I will thee nought conceale: Thy God, thy God am I and will not blame thee, 8 For giving not all manner offrings to me. 9 I have no need to take of thee at all, Goats of thy fold, or Calfe out of thy stall: 10 For all the beasts are mine within the woods: On thousand hills cattell are mine own goods. 11 I know for mine all birds that are on mountaines: All beasts are mine, which haunt the fields and fountaines. 12 Hungry if I were, I would not thee it tell: For all is mine that in the world doth dwell. 13 Eat I the flesh of great Bulls or Bullocks? Or drink the blood of Goats, and of the flocks? 14 Offer to God praise and hearty thanksgiving: And pay thy vowes unto God ever-living. 15 Call upon me, when troubled thou shalt be: Then will I help, and thou shalt honoru me. 16 To the wicked, thus saith th'Eternal God: Why dost thou preach my lawes and hests abroad? 17 Seeing thou hast them with thy mouth abused, And hat'st to be by discipline reformed. My words, I say, thou dost reject and hate, 18 If that thou see a thiefe as with thy mate, Thou run'st with him, and so your prey do seek: And art all one with bawds amd riffoams ele. 19 Thou giv'st thy selfe to back bites and to slander: And how thy tongue deceives, it is a wonder. 20 Thou sittest musing, thy brother how to blame: And how to put thy mother's sonne to shame. 21 These things thou didst and whilst I held my tongue, Thou didst me judge, because I staid so long, Like to thy selfe: yet though I kept long silence, Once shalt thou feel of thy wrongs just recompence. 22 Consider this, ye that forget the Lord: And feare not when he threatneth with his word: Lest without help I spoile you as a prey: 23 But he that thanks offer'th, praiseth me aye, Saith the Lord God, and he that walketh this trace, I will him teach God's saving health to imbrace. Appears in 2 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 50 First Line: The God of gods, the Lord Lyrics: 1 The God of gods, the Lord, hath cal'd the earth by name: From whence the Sun doth rise, unto the setting of the same. 2 From Sion his faire place, his glory bright and cleare, The perfect beauty of his grace, from thence it did appeare, 3 Our God shall come in haste, to speake he shall not doubt: Before him shall the fire wast, and tempest round about. 4 The heavens from on high, the earth below likewise He will call forth, to judge and trie, his fok he doth devise. 5 Bring forth my Saints, saith he, my faithfull flock most deare: Which are in band and league with me, my law to love and feare. 6 And when these thins are tride, the heavens shall record, That God is just and all must bide the judgement of the Lord. 7 My people O give heed, Israel to thee I cry: I am thy God, thy help at need, thou canst it not deny. 8 I do not say to thee, thy sacrifice is slack: Thou offer'\est daily unto me much more than I do lack. 9 Think'st thou that I do need thy cattel young or old? Or els so much delight to feed on Goats out of thy fold? 10 Nay, all the beasts are mine, in woods that eat their fills: And thousand more of neat and kine that run wild on the hills: The second Part: 11 The birds that build on hie, in hils and out of sight: And beasts that in the fields do lie, are subject to my might. 12 Then though I hungered sore, what need I ought of thine? Sitj that the earth with her great store. and all therein is mine? 13 To Buls flesh have I mind. to eat it dost thou think? Or such a sweetnesse do I find the blood of Goats to drink? 14 Give to the Lord his praise, with thanks to him apply: And see thou pay thy vowes alwaoes unto the God most hie. 15 Then seek and call to me, when ought would work thee blame; And I will sure deliver thee, that thou maist praise my Name. 16 But to the wicked traine, which talk of God each day: And yet their works are foule and vaine, to them the Lord will say> 17 With what face darest thou my word once speak or name? Why do thy talk my law allow? thy deeds deny the same/ 18 Whereas for to amend thy life thou art so slack: My word, the which thou dost pretend, is cast behind thy back, The third Part. 19 When thou a thief dost see, by theft to live in wealth: With him thou runst and dost agree likewise to thrive by stealth. 20 When thou dost them behold. that wives and maids defile: Thou lik'st it well, and waxest bold, to use that life most vile. 21 Thy lips thou dost apply, to slander and defame: Thy tongue is taught to craft and lie, and still doth use the same. 22 Thou studiest to revile thy friends to thee most neare: With slander thou wouldst needs defile thy mothers sonne most deare. 23 Hereat while I do wink, as though I did not see: Thou goest on still, and so dost think that I am like to thee. 24 But sure I will not let to strike when I begin: Thy faults in order I will set, And open all thy sin. 25 Mark this I you require, that have not God in mind: Lest when I plague you in mine ire, your help be far to find, 26 He that doth give to me the sacrifice of praise, Doth please me well and he shall see to walk in godly waies.

The mighty God, the Lord, doth speak

Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 2 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 50 Lyrics: 1 The mighty God, the Lord, doth speak, and to earth doth call, even from the rising of the sun to where he hath his fall. 2 From out of Zion, his own hill, where beauty dwells enshrined, God in his glorious majesty and mighty power hath shined. 3 Our God assuredly shall come, keep silence shall not he; before him fire shall waste, great storms shall round about him be. 4 He to the heavens above shall call, and to the earth below, that of his people he to all his judgment just may show. 5 Let all my saints together now unto me gathered be, those that by sacrifice have made a covenant with me. 6 And then the heavens shall declare his righteousness abroad; because the Lord himself doth come; none else is judge but God. 7 Hear, O my people, I will speak, and I will testify against thee, O mine Israel; God, even thy God, am I. 8 Not for thy sacrifices I reprove thee ever will, nor for burnt-offerings, which have been before me offered still. 9 I’ll take no bullock nor he-goats from house nor folds of thine: 10 beasts of the forest, cattle all on thousand hills, are mine. 11 The fowls are all to me well known that mountains high do yield; and I do challenge as mine own the wild beasts of the field. 12 If I were hungry, I would not to thee for need complain; for earth, with all its fulness, doth to me of right pertain. 13 That I to eat the flesh of bulls take pleasure dost thou think? Or that I need, to quench my thirst, the blood of goats to drink? 14 Nay, rather unto me, thy God, thanksgiving offer thou; to the Most High perform thy word, and fully pay thy vow: 15 and in the day of thy distress do thou unto my cry; I will deliver thee, and thou my name shalt glorify. 16 But to the wicked man God saith, How is it thou dost dare my covenant in thy mouth to take, my statutes to declare? 17 And yet all good instruction thou perversely hated hast, likewise my words behind thy back thou in contempt dost cast. 18 When thou a thief didst see, with him thou didst consent to sin, and with the vile adulterers thou hast partaker been. 19 Thy mouth to evil thou dost give, thy tongue deceit doth frame. 20 Thou sitt’st, and ‘gainst thy brother speak’st, thy mother’s son to shame. 21 These things thou wickedly hast done, and I have silent been; thou thought’st that I was like thyself, and did approve thy sin: but I will sharply thee reprove, and set before thine eyes, arrayed in order, thy misdeeds and thine iniquities. 22 Consider this, and be afraid, ye that forget the Lord, lest I in pieces tear you all, when none can help afford. 23 He truly doth me glorify who offers to me praise; and him I'll God's salvation show that orders right his ways.
