O Holy City, Seen of John

Author: Walter Russell Bowie Meter: 8.6.8.6.8.6 Appears in 89 hymnals Scripture: Revelation 21 Lyrics: 1 O holy city, seen of John, Where Christ, the Lamb, does reign, Within whose foursquare walls shall come No night, nor need, nor pain, And where the tears are wiped from eyes That shall not weep again. 2 O shame to us who rest content While lust and greed for gain In street and shop and tenement Wring gold from human pain, And bitter lips in blind despair Cry “Christ has died in vain!” 3 Give us, O God, the strength to build The city that hath stood Too long a dream, whose laws are love, Whose ways are servanthood, And where the sun that shines becomes God’s grace for human good. 4 Already in the mind of God That city rises fair. Lo, how its splendor challenges The souls that greatly dare, And bids us seize the whole of life And build its glory there. Used With Tune: MORNING SONG

Rev. 21:1-9: Lo! what a glorious sight appears

Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 286 hymnals Scripture: Revelation 21:1-9 First Line: Lo! what a glorious sight appears Lyrics: Lo! what a glorious sight appears to our admiring eyes! The former seas have passed away, the former earth and skies. From heav’n the New Jerus’lem comes, all worthy of its Lord; See all things now at last renewed, and paradise restored! Attending angels shout for joy, and the bright armies sing; Mortals! behold the sacred seat of your descending King! The God of glory down to men removes his bless’d abode; He dwells with men; his people they, and he his people’s God. His gracious hand shall wipe the tears from ev’ry weeping eye: And pains and groans, and griefs and fears, and death itself, shall die. Behold, I change all human things! saith he, whose words are true; Lo! what was old is passed away, and all things are made new! I am the First, and I the Last, through endless years the same; I AM, is my memorial still, and my eternal name. Ho, ye that thirst! to you my grace shall hidden streams disclose, And open full the sacred spring, whence life for ever flows. Bless’d is the man that overcomes; I’ll own him for a son; A rich inheritance rewards the conquests he hath won. But bloody hands and hearts unclean, and all the lying race, The faithless, and the scoffing crew, who spurn at offered grace; They, seized by justice, shall be doomed in dark abyss to lie, And in the fiery burning lake the second death shall die. O may we stand before the Lamb, when earth and seas are fled, And hear the judge pronounce our name, with blessings on our bead!

Jesus, lover of my soul

Author: Charles Wesley (1707-1788) Meter: 7.7.7.7 D Appears in 3,226 hymnals Scripture: Revelation 21:6 Lyrics: 1 Jesus, lover of my soul, let me to thy bosom fly, while the nearer waters roll, while the tempest still is high. Hide me, O my Saviour, hide, till the storm of life is past; safe into the haven guide, oh, receive my soul at last! 2 Other refuge have I none, hangs my helpless soul on thee; leave, ah! leave me not alone, still support and comfort me. All my trust on thee is stayed, all my help from thee I bring; cover my defenceless head with the shadow of thy wing. 3 Thou, O Christ, art all I want; more than all in thee I find! Raise the fallen, cheer the faint, heal the sick, and lead the blind. Just and holy is thy name, I am all unrighteousness; false and full of sin I am, thou art full of truth and grace. 4 Plenteous grace with thee is found, grace to cover all my sin; let the healing streams abound, make and keep me pure within. Thou of life the fountain art, freely let me take of thee; spring thou up within my heart, rise to all eternity. The Church's one foundation

Author: Samuel John Stone (1839-1900) Meter: 7.6.7.6.7.6.7.6 Appears in 861 hymnals Scripture: Revelation 21:2 Lyrics: 1 The Church's one foundation is Jesus Christ her Lord: she is his new creation by water and the word; from heaven he came and sought her to be his holy bride; with his own blood he bought her, and for her life he died. 2 Called forth from every nation, yet one o'er all the earth, her charter of salvation: one Lord, one faith, one birth. One holy name she blesses, and shares one holy food, as to one hope she presses, with every grace endued. 3 In toil and tribulation, and tumult of her war she waits the consummation of peace for evermore, till with the vision glorious her longing eyes are blest, and the great Church victorious shall be the Church at rest. 4 Yet she on earth has union with God, the Three in one, and mystical communion with those whose rest is won. O happy ones and holy! Lord, give us grace that we, like them, the meek and lowly, on high may dwell with thee. For the Healing of the Nations

Author: Fred Kaan Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.7 Appears in 58 hymnals Scripture: Revelation 21 Lyrics: 1 For the healing of the nations, Lord, we pray with one accord; for a just and equal sharing of the things that earth affords; To a life of love in action help us rise and pledge our word, help us rise and pledge our word. 2 Lead us forward into freedom; from despair your world release, that, redeemed from war and hatred, all may come and go in peace. Show us how through care and goodness fear will die and hope increase, fear will die and hope increase. 3 All that kills abundant living, let it from the earth be banned; pride of status, race, or schooling, dogmas that obscure your plan. In our common quest for justice may we hallow life's brief span, may we hallow life's brief span. 4 You, Creator God, have written your great name on humankind; for our growing in your likeness bring the life of Christ to mind, that by our response and service earth its destiny may find, earth its destiny may find. On Jordan's stormy banks I stand, And cast a wishful eye

Author: Stennett Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 1,336 hymnals Scripture: Revelation 21 Lyrics: 1 On Jordan's stormy banks I stand, And cast a wishful eye To Canaan's fair and happy land, Where my possessions lie. 2 Oh, the transporting, rapturous scene, That rises to my sight!-- Sweet fields, arrayed in living green, And rivers of delight. 3 O'er all those wide-extended plains Shines one eternal day; There God the Son for ever reigns, And scatters night away. 4 No chilling winds, nor poisonous breath, Can reach that healthful shore; Sickness and sorrow, pain and death, Are felt and feared no more. 5 When shall I reach that happy place, And be for ever blest? When shall I see my Father's face, And in his bosom rest? 6 Filled with delight, my raptured soul Would here no longer stay; Though Jordan's waves should round me roll, I'd fearless launch away. It came upon the midnight clear

Author: Edmund Hamilton Sears (1810-1876) Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 873 hymnals Scripture: Revelation 21:1-4 Lyrics: 1 It came upon the midnight clear, that glorious song of old, from angels bending near the earth to touch their harps of gold: "Peace on the earth, good will to you from heaven's all-gracious King!" The world in solemn stillness lay to hear the angels sing. 2 Still through the cloven skies they come, with peaceful wings unfurled: and still their heavenly music floats o'er all the weary world; above its sad and lowly plains they bend on hovering wing, and ever o'er its Babel-sounds the blessèd angels sing. 3 But with the woes of sin and strife the world has suffered long: beneath the angels' hymn have rolled two thousand years of wrong: and warring humankind hears not the love-song which they bring: oh, hush the noise and still the strife to hear the angels sing. 4 And you, beneath life's crushing load whose forms are bending low, who toil along the climbing way with painful steps and slow, look now! for glad and golden hours come swiftly on the wing: oh, rest beside the weary road, and hear the angels sing. 5 For lo! the days are hastening on, by prophet bards foretold, when, with the ever-rolling years, still dawns the Age of Gold, when peace shall over all the earth its ancient splendours fling, and all the world give back the song which now the angels sing. Author: Frank. M. North Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 369 hymnals Scripture: Revelation 21 Lyrics: 1 Where cross the crowded ways of life, where sound the cries of race and clan, above the noise of selfish strife, we hear your voice, O Son of Man. 2 In haunts of wretchedness and need, on shadowed thresholds dark with fears, from paths where hide the lures of greed, we catch the vision of your tears. 3 The cup of water given for you still holds the freshness of your grace; yet long these multitudes to see the true compassion of your face. 4 O Master, from the mountainside make haste to heal these hearts of pain; among these restless throngs abide, and tread the city's streets again 5 till all the world shall learn your love and follow where your feet have trod, till glorious from your heaven above shall come the city of our God.
