Clarence Bicknell

1842 - 1918 Scripture: Psalm 23 Author of "Ĉar Dio, la Paŝtisto mia" in TTT-Himnaro Cigneta Clarence Bicknell (27 October 1842-17 July 1918) was a British amateur botanist, painter and archaeologist, with a doctorate in mathematics, and an Anglican priest (in Italy, from 1877 until he left the Church, date unknown). He was born in Herne Hill, England, on October 27, 1842, and died in Tenda (then in Italy, but since 1947 in France) on July 17, 1918. Arriving in Italy in 1877 to work as an Anglican vicar, he built a museum ("Museo Biblioteca Clarence Bicknell") in Bordighera to house his botanical and archaeological collections. He became noted for his identification of the plants and petroglyphs of the Ligurian Riviera. His writings included Flowering Plants of the Riviera and Neighboring Mountains (1885) and Guide to the Prehistoric Rock Engravings of the Italian Maritime Alps (1913). In addition to his own museum, his collections were archived at the University of Genoa. A Volapükist, he left that language for Esperanto in 1897. He attended the first international Esperanto convention, at Boulogne-sur-mer, France, in 1905. He produced a number of hymns that are still in use (seven translations and one original in Adoru Kantante (1971), and nine texts in Adoru (2001). He was active in work on behalf of the blind, and transcribed many Esperanto books into braille. In addition to his hymnic work, he wrote many original poems in, and translated secular poetry into, Esperanto, including Macaulay's "Horacio", 1906; Tennyson's "Gvinevero", 1907; pieces by Sturgis; Giacosa's "Ŝakludo", 1915. He also provided monetary support to many Esperanto activities, and founded and led until his death the local Esperanto club in Bordighera. Regrettably, the date, reason, and nature of his "leaving the church" is not explained in the sources consulted (mainly the English, Italian, and Esperanto Wikipedias and the author indexes of the Esperanto hymnals). Constance Cherry

Dr. Constance Cherry is an experienced professor, worship leader, musician, and pastor, having served in local church ministry and academic teaching positions for more than thirty years. While a young woman she received a life-time vocational call to serve Christ through serving his Church. For many years she served as a full-time minister of music in large churches where she directed multiple types of choral groups and instrumental ensembles, prepared worship services, and provided leadership for the many dimensions of the multi-faceted church music program. Her undergraduate degree in music (Huntington University) and her Master of Music degree (Bowling Green State University) prepared her well for the musical expertise required of such positions. As a result, her vocational call to ministry expanded into teaching seminary full-time at Winebrenner Theological Seminary, Findlay, Ohio, and serving congregations as pastor. Constance is ordained in the United Methodist Church. Today Constance is Professor of Worship and Pastoral Ministry at Indiana Wesleyan University, Marion, Indiana where she directs the major in Christian Worship. Since 2000 she has served on the faculty of The Robert E. Webber Institute for Worship Studies located in Jacksonville, Florida, traveling twice yearly to teach in the doctoral program of IWS. In addition, she teaches worship at institutions of higher education in several countries, most recently in the Master’s program at the Evangelische Theologische Faculteit (Evangelical Theological Faculty) in Leuven, Belgium (2008 & 2010). Constance is frequently called upon to serve as conference speaker on matters related to worship and church music. She is a published composer (Lorenz, Hope Publishing Company, and Celebrations Unlimited) as well as the author of many hymn texts. She currently has hymns in seven major hymnals. Ludwig van Beethoven

1770 - 1827 Scripture: Psalm 23:1 Composer of "HYMN TO JOY" in Worship and Song A giant in the history of music, Ludwig van Beethoven (b. Bonn, Germany, 1770; d. Vienna, Austria, 1827) progressed from early musical promise to worldwide, lasting fame. By the age of fourteen he was an accomplished viola and organ player, but he became famous primarily because of his compositions, including nine symphonies, eleven overtures, thirty piano sonatas, sixteen string quartets, the Mass in C, and the Missa Solemnis. He wrote no music for congregational use, but various arrangers adapted some of his musical themes as hymn tunes; the most famous of these is ODE TO JOY from the Ninth Symphony. Although it would appear that the great calamity of Beethoven's life was his loss of hearing, which turned to total deafness during the last decade of his life, he composed his greatest works during this period. Edward Hodges

Buried: Church of St. Mary the Virgin, Stanton Drew (about eight miles south of Bristol). Hodges’ musical gift showed itself at an early age; by 1819, he was playing the organ at St. James’ Church in Bristol, and at St. Nicholas’, 1821-1838. He also had an interesting mechanical bent, and spurred several technical improvements in organ design. He composed a number of services and anthem pieces, and Cambridge University awarded him a doctorate in music in 1825. Hodges eventually emigrated, accepting a post at the cathedral in Toronto, Canada, in 1838. The next year, he became music director at Trinity Parish in New York City. He became the organist at Trinity Church when it opened in 1846 (the church had its organ built to his specifications). He retired for health reasons in 1859, and returned to his native England in 1863. Whitney, 96, of Scottsbluff died Thursday, November 16, 2023, at the Residency in Scottsbluff. Her memorial service will be held 10:00 A.M. Monday, November 27, 2023, at St. Francis Episcopal Church with Reverend Erin Rath officiating. Interment of her ashes will follow at West Lawn Cemetery in Gering. Memorials may be made to the Lied Scottsbluff Public Library or to the church. Rae was born at Chippenham, Wiltshire, England May 21, 1927, the only daughter of Alice Martha “Pat” Davis and Arthur James Phillips. Educated at Chippenham Grammar School and the University of Bristol, she received her B.A. (Englis Honors) degree in 1948 and Certificate of Education in 1949. She was lady President of Bristol University Branch of the Student Christian Movement 1947-48. Rae taught in secondary schools in Bicester, Oxfordshire in Wotton-under-edge, Gloucestershire and in London. During this time, she also served as a lay preacher in various village chapels. She had a life-long concern for the greater understanding between churches, and from 1958-60 she lived at St. Basil’s House in London as a resident Secretary of the Fellowship of St. Alban and St. Sergius, working both with Eastern Orthodox Churches and those of the west. In June of 1960, on a coach tour of Italy, heading for the Passion Play in Oberammergau, Austria Rae met the Rev Clyde E. Whitney, Rector of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, Scottsbluff, NE. They were married in Chippenham on December 31, 1960. Scottsbluff then became her home. The Whitneys started the local observance of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity in 1962 and during the mid-sixties worked to establish The Retreat House of the Transfiguration at Bayard. After Father Whitney’s retirement in 1969, they served the English-speaking congregation in Guatemala City, Central America for 12 months. From 1979-85 they were volunteer local coordinators for the American Bible Society. During his 23 years of retirement, when Clyde was called to serve various churches in Nebraska and Wyoming, Rae was licensed to help her husband as a lay reader and eucharistic minister. She was on the Board of Friends of the Scottsbluff Library for a long time and served on the Editorial Board of Bosom Buddies Network, Regional West Medical Center. She led several weekly Bible classes for many years. She was elected President of Church Women United, Scotts Bluff County 1967-68 and CWU State Vice President 1981-82. She became Diocesan State President of the Episcopal Church Women 1976-77 and served on the national Episcopal Church’s Women’s Triennial Committees 1973-79. She was appointed Worship Chairman for the 1979 Triennial Denver. Soon after her arrival here, Rae became interested in local history and in the 1980’s wrote “A Portrait of Dr. Georgia Arbuckle Fix”, which has been presented over fifty times in the region. Rae was also a free-lance writer of reviews, articles, and poems, but was most widely known for her hymn writing. Of her several hundred hymn texts, some have found their way into several denominational hymnals and supplements in the United States, Canada, Scotland, England, Hong Kong, and Australia. Four collections of her hymns have been published by Selah Publishing Co. Rae was a member of St. Francis Episcopal Church (formerly St. Andrew’s), YMCA, Friends of the Library, American Association of University Women, the Cooperative Ministries Council, Church Women United, Fraternity of Prayer for Christian Unity, Fellowship of St. Alban and St. Sergius and the Hymn Societies of the US, Canada, Great Britain, and Ireland. After the Whitneys moved to Northfield Villa, Gering in 1988, Rae soon became editor of the Villa’s newsletter. Clyde died April 22, 1992, and in 1993 Rae moved to the Residency in Scottsbluff and continued to edit the monthly newsletter for both retirement communities. Rae was preceded in death by her husband; parents; her young brother Kenneth and her special friend, Edward Doemland of Milwaukee, WI. She is survived by cousins in England and many valued friends, especially Eva Carne, of Ellensburg, WA and Jane Wisniewski, of Scottsbluff, NE. --Obituary

In 2016 she published Elfie: Adventures on the Midwest Frontier, a chapter book for children, and Embracing the Light: Reflectioins on God’s Holy Word, a collection of meditations for individual or small group use. Augsburg Fortress also published Sing the Stories of God’s NEW People, the third in a trilogy of Bible story-based collections of songs for young children, written with her longtime colleague, John D. Horman. The two have written over a hundred hymns together, some of which are included in these hymnals and supplements: Community of Christ Sings, God’s Mission, God’s Song, Hymns of Heritage and Hope, Lift Up Your Hearts, Sing Justice! Do Justice, Sing the Faith, Singing Our Savior’s Story, Singing the New Testament, The Faith We Sing, Upper Room Worshipbook, Voices Found, Voices United, and Worship and Song. They have also published four collections of their hymns: Come Away with Me and Time Now to Gather (Abingdon, 1998), The Song Lingers On (Zimbel, 2003), and Faith That Lets Us Sing (Wayne Leupold Editions, 2017). Mary is a Life Member and former board member of Choristers Guild and a Life Member of the Hymn Society in the United States and Canada. She is also a member of ASCAP. In 2006 she received a Distinguished Achievement Award from her alma mater, Carleton College in Northfield, MN, in recognition of her work in composing text for religious music. Mary was married to the Rev. Richard K. Keithahn, a U.C.C. pastor, and widowed in 1986. She has three children, eight grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. --mnk

W. A. Ogden

1841 - 1897 Scripture: Psalm 23:2 Author of "Step by Step" in Joyful Lays William Augustine Ogden USA 1841-1897. Born at Franklin County, OH, his family moved to IN when he was age six. He studied music in local singing schools at age 8, and by age 10 could read church music fairly well. Later, he could write out a melody by hearing it sung or played. He enlisted in the American Civil War in the 30th IN Volunteer Infantry. During the war he organized a male choir which became well known throughout the Army of the Cumberland. After the war, he returned home, resumed music study, and taught school. He married Jennie V Headington, and they had two children: Lowell and Marian. He worked for the Iowa Normal School, Toledo Public School System. Among his teachers: Lowell Mason, Thomas Hastings, E E Baily and B F Baker, president of the Boston Music School. He wrote many hymns, both lyrics and/or music. He later issued his first song book, “The silver song” (1870). It became quite popular, selling 500,000 copies. He went on to publish other song books. Ogden also taught music at many schools in the U S and Canada. In 1887 he became superintendent of music in the public schools of Toledo, OH. His works include: “New silver songs for Sunday school” (1872), “Crown of life” (1875), “Notes of victory” (1885), “The way of life” (1886), “Gathering jewels” (1886).
