Psalm 145

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 256 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 145 First Line: My God, my King, thy various praise Lyrics: My God, my King, thy various praise Shall fill the remnant of my days; Thy grace employ my humble tongue Till death and glory raise the song. The wings of every hour shall bear Some thankful tribute to thine ear; And every setting sun shall see New works of duty done for thee. Thy truth and justice I'll proclaim; Thy bounty flows an endless stream; Thy mercy swift, thine anger slow, But dreadful to the stubborn foe. Thy works with sovereign glory shine, And speak thy majesty divine; Let Britain round her shores proclaim The sound and honor of thy name. Let distant times and nations raise The long succession of thy praise, And unborn ages make my song The joy and labor of their tongue. But who can speak thy wondrous deeds? Thy greatness all our thoughts exceeds? Vast and unsearchable thy ways, Vast and immortal be thy praise! Topics: Goodness of God; Attributes of God; God His perfections; God mercy and truth; Mercies and truth of God; Perfections of God; Afflicted and tempted, supported; Truth grace, and protection; God great and good; Power and majesty of God; Praise General; Faithfulness Of God; Compassion of God; God goodness and mercy; God goodness and truth; God kind to his people; God worthy of all praise

Psalm 145 Part 3

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 214 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 145:17-21 First Line: Let every tongue thy goodness speak Lyrics: Let every tongue thy goodness speak, Thou sovereign Lord of all; Thy strength'ning hands uphold the weak, And raise the poor that fall. When sorrow bows the spirit down, Or virtue lies distressed Beneath some proud oppressor's frown, Thou giv'st the mourners rest. The Lord supports our tott'ring days, And guides our giddy youth; Holy and just are all his ways, And all his words are truth. He knows the pains his servants feel, He hears his children cry, And their best wishes to fulfil, His grace is ever nigh. His mercy never shall remove From men of heart sincere; He saves the souls whose humble love Is joined with holy fear. [His stubborn foes his sword shall slay, And pierce their hearts with pain But none that serve the Lord shall say, "They sought his aid in vain."] [My lips shall dwell upon his praise, And spread his fame abroad; Let all the sons of Adam raise The honors of their God.] Topics: Goodness of God; Attributes of God; God His perfections; God mercy and truth; Mercies and truth of God; Perfections of God; Afflicted and tempted, supported; Truth grace, and protection; God great and good; Power and majesty of God; Praise General; Faithfulness Of God; Compassion of God; God goodness and mercy; God goodness and truth; God kind to his people; God worthy of all praise

I Will Exalt My God and King

Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 12 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 145 Lyrics: 1 I will exalt my God and King, and I will ever praise your name. I will extol you every day and evermore your praise proclaim. You, LORD, are greatly to be praised; your greatness is beyond all thought. From age to age your people tell the mighty wonders you have wrought. 2 On your most glorious majesty and on your deeds my mind will dwell. Your deeds will fill the world with awe, and all your greatness I will tell. Your matchless goodness and your grace your people will commemorate; and all your truth and righteousness our joyful song will celebrate. 3 The LORD our God is rich in grace, tender to us, compassionate. His anger is most slow to rise; his love and kindness are most great. The LORD is good in all his ways; his creatures know his constant care. To all his works his love extends; all creatures in his mercies share. 4 All you have made will praise you, LORD; your mighty acts your saints will show, till all the peoples on the earth the splendor of your kingdom know. Eternal is your kingdom, LORD, forever strong and ever sure; while generations rise and die, your glorious reign will still endure. 5 The LORD is faithful to his word; he will extend his gracious hand. The LORD upholds the faltering feet and makes the weak securely stand. The eyes of all look up to you for food and drink, which you supply; your open hand is bountiful, and every need you satisfy. 6 The LORD is just in all his ways; in all his works the LORD is kind, and all who call on him in truth in him a present helper find. He will fulfill the heart's desire of those who fear him and obey. The LORD will surely hear their cry, will save them when to him they pray. 7 The LORD in grace preserves his saints, redeeming those who love his name. The wicked he will overthrow and put his enemies to shame. My mouth will sing the glorious praise of God, whom earth and heaven adore. Let every creature praise his name forever and forevermore! Psalm 145: O Lord, thou art my God and King

Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 37 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 145 First Line: O Lord, thou art my God and King Lyrics: 1O Lord, thou art my God and King; Thee will I magnify and praise: I will thee bless, and gladly sing Unto thy holy name always. 2Each day I rise I will thee bless, And praise thy name time without end. 3Much to be prais’d, and great God is; His greatness none can comprehend. 4Race shall thy works praise unto race, The mighty acts show done by thee. 5I will speak of the glorious grace, And honour of thy majesty; Thy wondrous works I will record. 6By men the might shall be extoll’d Of all thy dreadful acts, O Lord: And I thy greatness will unfold. 7They utter shall abundantly The mem’ry of thy goodness great; And shall sing praises cheerfully, Whilst they thy righteousness relate. 8The Lord our God is gracious, Compassionate is he also; In mercy he is plenteous, But unto wrath and anger slow. 9Good unto all men is the Lord: O’er all his works his mercy is. 10Thy works all praise to thee afford: Thy saints, O Lord, thy name shall bless. 11The glory of thy kingdom show Shall they, and of thy power tell: 12That so men’s sons his deeds may know, His kingdom’s grace that doth excel. 13Thy kingdom hath none end at all, It doth through ages all remain. 14The Lord upholdeth all that fall, The cast-down raiseth up again. 15The eyes of all things, Lord, attend, And on thee wait that here do live, And thou, in season due, dost send Sufficient food them to relieve. 16Yea, thou thine hand dost open wide, And ev’ry thing dost satisfy That lives, and doth on earth abide, Of thy great liberality. 17The Lord is just in his ways all, And holy in his works each one. 18He’s near to all that on him call, Who call in truth on him alone. 19God will the just desire fulfil Of such as do him fear and dread: Their cry regard, and hear he will, And save them in the time of need. 20The Lord preserves all, more and less, That bear to him a loving heart: But workers all of wickedness Destroy will he, and clean subvert. 21Therefore my mouth and lips I’ll frame To speak the praises of the Lord: To magnify his holy name For ever let all flesh accord.

I see thy cross -- there teach my heart to cling: oh, let me seek thee, and oh, let me find! 4 Teach me to feel that thou art always nigh: teach me the struggles of the soul to bear, to check the rising doubt, the rebel sigh: teach me the patience of unanswered prayer. 5 Teach me to love thee as thine angels love, one holy passion filling all my frame -- the baptism of the heaven-descended Dove, my heart an altar, and thy love the flame. Abide with Me

Author: Henry Francis Lyte Meter: 10.10.10.10 Appears in 1,670 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 145:18 First Line: Abide with me; fast falls the eventide Lyrics: 1 Abide with me: fast falls the eventide. The darkness deepens; Lord, with me abide! When other helpers fail and comforts flee, help of the helpless, O abide with me. 2 Swift to its close ebbs out life's little day; earth's joys grow dim; its glories pass away; change and decay in all around I see. O thou who changest not, abide with me. 3 I need thy presence every passing hour; what but thy grace can foil the tempter's power? Who, like thyself, my guide and stay can be? Through cloud and sunshine, Lord, abide with me. 4 I fear no foe, with thee at hand to bless; ills have no weight, and tears no bitterness. Where is death's sting? Where, grave, thy victory? I triumph still, if thou abide with me. 5 Hold thou thy cross before my closing eyes; shine through the gloom and point me to the skies. Heaven's morning breaks, and earth's vain shadows flee; in life, in death, O Lord, abide with me. Topics: Comfort; Evening; Funeral; Grace; Living and Dying in Christ Used With Tune: EVENTIDE

Author: John Henry Newman, 1801-1890 Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 169 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 145:17 Lyrics: 1 Praise to the Holiest in the height, and in the depth be praise: in all his words most wonderful, most sure in all his ways. 2 O loving wisdom of our God! When all was sin and shame, a second Adam to the fight and to the rescue came. 3 O wisest love! that flesh and blood, which did in Adam fail, should strive afresh against the foe, should strive and should prevail; 4 And that a higher gift than grace should flesh and blood refine, God's presence and his very self, and essence all-divine. 5 O generous love! that he, who smote in Man for man the foe, the double agony in Man for man should undergo; 6 And in the garden secretly, and on the cross on high, should teach his brethren, and inspire to suffer and to die. 7 Praise to the Holiest in the height, and in the depth be praise: in all his words most wonderful, most sure in all his ways.
