And can it be, that I should gain

Author: Charles Wesley (1707-1788) Meter: 8.8.8.8.8.8 Appears in 286 hymnals Scripture: 1 Corinthians 6:7 Lyrics: 1 And can it be, that I should gain an interest in the Saviour's blood? Died he for me, who caused his pain -- for me, who him to death pursued? Amazing love! how can it be that thou, my God, shouldst die for me? 2 'Tis mystery all: the Immortal dies! Who can explore his strange design? In vain the firstborn seraph tries to sound the depths of love divine. 'Tis mercy all! Let earth adore, let angel minds inquire no more. 3 He left his Father's throne above, -- so free, so infinite his grace -- emptied himself of all but love, and bled for Adam's helpless race: 'tis mercy all, immense and free; for, O my God, it found out me! 4 Long my imprisoned spirit lay fast bound in sin and nature's night; thine eye diffused a quickening ray; I woke, the dungeon flamed with light; my chains fell off, my heart was free, I rose, went forth, and followed thee. 5 No condemnation now I dread; Jesus, and all in him, is mine! Alive in him, my living Head, and clothed in righteousness divine, bold I approach the eternal throne, and claim the crown, through Christ, my own. Grundtvig; Carl Döving Meter: 8.8.8.8.8.8.8 Appears in 73 hymnals Scripture: 1 Corinthians 6:19 First Line: Built on the Rock, the church shall stand Lyrics: 1 Built on the Rock, the church shall stand even when steeples are falling; Christ builds his church in every land; bells still are chiming and calling, calling the young and old to rest, calling the souls of those distressed, longing for life everlasting. 2 Not in a temple made with hands God the Almighty is dwelling; high in the heavens his temple stands, all earthly temples excelling. Yet he who dwells in heaven above chooses to live with us in love, making our bodies his temple. 3 We are God's house of living stones, built for his own habitation; he fills our hearts, his humble thrones, granting us life and salvation. Yet to this place, an earthly frame, we come with thanks to praise his name; God grants his people true blessing. There is a green hill far away

Author: Cecil Frances Alexander (1818-1895) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 695 hymnals Scripture: 1 Corinthians 6:20 Lyrics: 1 There is a green hill far away, outside a city wall, where the dear Lord was crucified, who died to save us all. 2 We may not know, we cannot tell what pains he had to bear; but we believe it was for us he hung and suffered there. 3 He died that we might be forgiven, he died to make us good, that we might go at last to heaven, saved by his precious blood. 4 There was no other good enough to pay the price of sin; he only could unlock the gate of heaven, and let us in. 5 Oh, dearly, dearly has he loved, and we must love him too, and trust in his redeeming blood, and try his works to do. Author: Frances R. Havergal Meter: 6.5.6.5.6.5 D Appears in 447 hymnals Scripture: 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 Lyrics: 1 Who is on the Lord's side? Who will serve the King? Who will be his helpers, other lives to bring? Who will leave the world's side? Who will face the foe? Who is on the Lord's side? Who for him will go? By thy call of mercy, by thy grace divine, we are on the Lord's side, Savior, we are thine. 2 Not for weight of glory, not for crown and palm, enter we the army, raise the warrior psalm; but for Love that claimeth lives for whom he died: he whom Jesus nameth must be on his side. By thy love constraining, by thy grace divine, we are on the Lord's side, Savior, we are thine. 3 Jesus, thou has bought us, not with gold or gem, but with thine own life-blood for thy diadem: with thy blessing filling each who comes to thee, thou hast made us willing, thou has made us free. By thy grand redemption, by thy grace divine, We are on the Lord's side, Savior, we are thine. 4 Fierce may be the conflict, strong may be the foe, but the King's own army none can overthrow: round his standard ranging, vict'ry is secure; for his truth unchanging makes the triumph sure. Come Down, O Love Divine!

Author: Richard F. Littledale Meter: 6.6.11.6.6.11 Appears in 109 hymnals Scripture: 1 Corinthians 6:19 First Line: Come down, O Love divine Lyrics: 1 Come down, O love divine! Seek out this soul of mine and visit it with your own ardor glowing: O Comforter, draw near, within my heart appear, and kindle it, your holy flame bestowing. 2 O let it freely burn, till earthly passions turn to dust and ashes in its heat consuming; and let your glorious light shine ever on my sight, and make my pathway clear, by your illuming. 3 Let holy charity my outward vesture be, and lowliness become my inner clothing; true lowliness of heart which takes the humbler part, and for its own shortcomings weeps with loathing. 4 And so the yearning strong with which the soul will long shall far surpass the power of human telling; for none can guess its grace till we become the place in which the Holy Spirit makes his dwelling. Lord, Thou Lov'st the Cheerful Giver

Author: Robert Murray Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Appears in 38 hymnals Scripture: 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 Lyrics: 1 Lord, thou lov'st the cheerful giver, who with open heart and hand blesses freely, as a river that refreshes all the land. Grant us then the grace of giving with a spirit large and free, that our life and all our living, we may consecrate to thee. 2 We are thine, thy mercy sought us, found us in death's dreadful way, to the fold in safety brought us, never more from thee to stray. Thine own life thou freely gavest as an off'ring on the cross for each sinner whom thou savest from eternal shame and loss. 3 Blest by thee with gifts and graces, may we heed thy church's call; gladly in all times and places give to thee who givest all. Thou hast bought us, and no longer can we claim to be our own; ever free and ever stronger, we shall serve thee, Lord, alone. 4 Savior, thou hast freely given all the blessings we enjoy, earthly store and bread of heaven, love and peace without alloy; humbly now we bow before thee, and our all to thee resign; for the kingdom, pow'r, and glory, are, O Lord, forever thine. Your Word you underscore with deeds by using us to answer needs. 3 O what a joy to give, and then out of compassion give again. All is ready for the Feast!

Author: Frederick Pratt Green (1903-2000) Meter: 7.7.7 Appears in 2 hymnals Scripture: 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 Lyrics: 1 All is ready for the Feast! Every Jew is wondering how God will liberate them now. 2 Pilate, fearful of revolt he, at all costs, must avert, puts the Legion on alert. 3 Listen! Galilean crowds hail the Man from Nazareth, Jesus, riding to his death. 4 What authority he wields! With a whip of cords he clears temple courts of profiteers! 5 Watched by priests and pharisees, all he says and all he does fans the hatred of his foes. 6 Now he gathers those he loves in a room where bread and wine turn to sacrament and sign. 7 In that dark betrayal night, moved by hope, or fear or greed, Judas sets about his deed. 8 Jesus in the olive grove, waiting for a traitor's kiss, rises free from bitterness. 9 As he wakes his comrades up torches flicker in the glen, shadows turn to marching men. 10 In that dawn of blows and lies Church and State conspire to kill, hang three rebels on a hill. 11 Innocent and guilty drown in a flood of blood and sweat, how much darker can it get? 12 How much darker must it be for a God to see and care that men perish in despair? 13 It is God himself who dies! God in man shall set us free, God as Man - and only he. 14 Let him claim us as his own, we will serve as best we can such a God and such a Man! Final verse: 15 What does our salvation cost? Jesus, we shall never know all you gave and all we owe. Topics: Christ Incarnate Passion and Death; Christian Year Holy Week Used With Tune: HEILIGER GEIST
